About

SLOAN IN CONCERT:

Power pop titans Sloan have achieved cult status in their native Canada and built a diehard following around the world thanks to their potent blend of crunchy riffs and catchy hooks. The band's four members share songwriting duties, and the result is a wildly diverse sound that encompasses jaunty piano ditties, charging pop-punk, and stirring power ballads. Each member sings their own songs in concert, treating fans to a steady stream of distinct styles – from Chris Murphy's bright tenor to Patrick Pentland's rocking growl – before wowing them with gorgeous four-part harmonies. Their all-together-now enthusiasm in concert has ticket buyers singing along on stadium-worthy anthems like "Underwhelmed," "The Other Man," and "The Rest of My Life." Every aspect of Sloan's eclectic, infectious sound is cranked to the max when they perform live, and fans can’t get enough of the rocking party.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Bassist Chris Murphy and drummer Andrew Scott formed Sloan in 1991 while attending the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Guitarists Patrick Pentland and Jay Ferguson joined shortly after, creating the core lineup that’s remained unchanged for over 25 years. The band made their full-length debut in 1992 with Smeared, and instantly caught on with alternative rock fans in Canada. Unfortunately they had frequent disputes with their record label Geffen, who balked at promoting their hooky rock outside Canada during the grunge-obsessed '90s, and following the release of their 1994 sophomore album Twice Removed they split with the label. They used their own label Murderecords to release their 1996 album One Chord to Another, which was a huge critical and commercial success at home and received rave reviews when it was released in the US a year later. The group amassed fans through the late '90s and early '00s with perpetual touring and consistently solid records, and in 2006 they finally cracked the US charts with their eighth album Never Hear the End of It. Their popularity continued to grow abroad, leading up to the Top 10 debut of their 2014 album Commonwealth on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. Well into their third decade together, Sloan continues to impress both critics and fans with their adventurous recordings and powerhouse concerts.

like a good wine, sloan gets better with age

by mikeymoomoo on 2011-06-26Mod Club Theatre - Toronto

Great energy. Great venue. They still back up the claim that they are one of Canada's best bands, both live and in the studio. One hit after another - great vocals and harmony - what a tight show. My wife had never seen them before and loved it (she woke up singing their songs) Enough said!

1st Time Seeing These Guys And...

by Zip73 on 2011-06-24Mod Club Theatre - Toronto

...wow can they rock! I guess having been together for 20years they've figured things out. I have been wanting to see Sloan for awhile now, and have been wanting to check out the Mod Club for a long time so it was a perfect match! Great, great venue (recommend creeping up to the bar and parking there. Sure you get a few reaching in for drinks but at all times you have access to beer! That, and the washrooms are close). Had no idea that the guys ALL lead songs, as well as changed up instruments. So much talent. Would see them again any day.

June 22th, 2011 at Mod Club Theatre

by musicpsychos on 2011-06-24Mod Club Theatre - Toronto

Sloan delivered an exuberant set at the Mod Club Theatre on June 22nd 2011 for the second night of their two-night stand in Toronto. When the opening duo appeared on the packed venue, I screamed "That's the Sonic Boom guy!!!'- and I'm not referring Lullabye Arkestra! It seems that Sonic Boom just pumps out duo after duo! The grunge rock band - HOTKID - performed a fairly entertaining set. The 'Sonic Boom guy', Rob Butcher III's frisky drumming and the sweaty crunchy guitar playing of Shiloh Harrison warmed up the audience to be ready for the Sloan's performance. Despite beaming the stage with spotlights all of a sudden; I sensed the the excitement of the audience - but I saw no one on the stage. Without a drummer to be seen the drums echoed in the packed venue, and here comes... Sloan!!! The quartet ambled on the stage with the first song, "Follow the Leader." The diehard fans were treated to a refreshing but nostalgic set by the Canadian super collective. After just releasing of their 10th record, 'the Double Cross'; the band delivered a handful tunes from the new album, including 'The Answer was you', 'Shadow of Love', 'Beverly Terrance, and more. The audience seemed like they did their homework prior to the show and takingthe waves of new songs in joyfully. They also didn't forget to spoil the crowd with their good oldies sing-along tracks, such as 'Who thought you to live like that', 'Your daddy will do”, and 'Don't Believe Word.' The collective still sparked their individual personalities without any conflict with each other; Chris Murphy was constantly making eye contact with the crowd and enjoying the connection he made, Jay Ferguson quietly enjoying the groove with a big smile on his face, Patrick Pentland hauling his coolest 3 guitars that I've ever seen in my life (Gorgeous guitars!), and Andrew Scott rockin’ n rollin' while exuding an aura of cool. Their miraculous set wasn't over just yet. The encore was so epic that it made me almost cry, hearing the song, " The Rest of My Life" and " Money City Maniacs". It was the perfect way to end the remarkable night of full of awesomeness. Now that I've seen Sloan live twice, I shall go to Government of Canada and demand my Canadian citizenship. P.S. Thank you, the guy in a white-polo for saving me from the crazy lady who was pushing me so hard.

    went from best to worst

    by wabo76 on 2011-06-06Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

I saw Sloan play during the Olympics and it was the best concert I've ever been to (and I've been to a lot of great concerts). But this time around I was very disappointed. The crowd was probably the worst part as i thought the band sounded fine, however, they had about half as much energy and played a lot of songs that I have not heard and can only assume were off their newest album which most of the people attending didn't seem to know very well. Above all however, I still think Sloan is worth seeing and would recommend them to anyone who likes good indi style rock from Canada.

    Sloan great, Louis' sucks

by Trak on 2011-06-02Louis' Pub - Saskatoon

Once again, Sloan put on a great show, playing classics, both well-known and lesser-known, and a number of tracks from the new album. They rarely make a misstep in a live show. Unfortunately, this show was at Louis' Pub at the University of Saskatchewan, which is probably the worst live music venue in Saskatoon. Terrible sight lines, 8 good seats in the whole place, and a multitude of obstructed views. If you're taller than 6'4", I highly recommend Louis' Pub. Otherwise, don't bother

    Sloan is always Epic

by PerfectXt on 2009-12-20Louis' Pub - Saskatoon

Sloan is distinctly Canadian and is a band for all canadians of any age! This was the 3rd time seeing them in concert for me and I'll continue seeing them as long as they continue to come.

Awesome! Was harder rockin than I thought, one of few good 90's bands (Not too much good stuff then except for gin blossoms, collective soul, etc). And maritimers, too, like me (I'm from saint John, N.B.). Another plus! Anyways, they did Money City Maniacs in middle, and was getting impatient on Good in everyone and Coax Me, but they saved those till finale, and good in everyone right at end, which is their best (SAve best for last!) Started too late, though, as was bit before 11pm. For those of us who bus it from Coq, not good, as I had to take cab home from Lougheed Station, as many times before comin home from Commodore concerts, as start so late. Other than that, was rockin! A+

    Solid Show from Sloan

by Anonymous on 2009-12-19The Starlite Room - Edmonton

A pretty good show on the whole. I'm not a big fan of either opening act, but they put in a good performance. Sloan, as always, was engaging and a lot of fun. They played a good selection of old favorites and newer material. Love that new EP!

Energetic, fun, good mix of songs off the new EP and old songs... It was a great show, especially since it was at the Commodore, the BEST VENUE in Vancouver. They sounded very good and it was just a great show!

    Sloan was solid, as always.

    by AJ72 on 2009-12-16The Pyramid - Winnipeg

I enjoyed seeing Sloan on a very frozen Winnipeg evening. They played all the songs hoped for and had merch handy to buy a Christmas present for my sister in Estevan (sorry you couldn't come!) The drummer seemed rather out of sorts, I take it wherever they travelled from had crappy weather and that seemed to be affecting the mood of the evening. It felt a bit like they just wanted to get the set done and get out of town. No complaints about the music, loved it as always. Took a friend who was a Sloan virgin and he related that he really enjoyed the band, even though he was not familiar with much of their music. I hope to see Sloan around again soon, maybe on a warmer and happier note!

by ThunderPeep on 2009-12-16Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

Even though this was a mellower show than I've seen from them before, there was still a ton of energy and a fantastic mix of old and newer tunes. All the favs were played and the new songs sounded great!!

    Venue was not that great...

by LauraMae on 2009-12-14Sait's The Gateway - Calgary

I think that a great band like Sloan should have played at a different venue, such as Mac hall or Jack Singer, or even the Jubilee. The sound did not carry very well and it seemed quite muffled. I still love Sloan though! And their new stuff they played was awesome.
