    Sonic Youth = Sonic Bliss

    by concertjunkie88 on 2009-07-27Massey Hall - Toronto

If you get to see Sonic Youth just once in your life, do so. Although they didn't play a sprawling set, what they delivered hit the spot. Their sonic soundscapes translate very well to Massey Hall and it is quite a treat to see legends play a legendary venue.

Too many songs to play just one album

by LudicriousSpeed on 2009-07-22Massey Hall - Toronto

Always a good band to see play live, but they need to mix it up a bit. Too many new songs and not enough of the energy that makes them stand out from the rest!

    The Sonics continue to amaze.

by Youthfan on 2009-07-19Massey Hall - Toronto

I have had the pleasure of seeing Sonic Youth four or five times now, and I would rank this show as second to the first time I saw them at Lollapalooza. Not that the Lolla show was technically better, but it was my fist time seeing them, I wasn't too familiar with their music, and their set blew me away and turned me into a big time fan. Starfield Road rocked. Anyway, this show was great. As always, they played virtually all of their new record (which is really solid). The venue was a great choice, as Massey Hall gives you better sight lines than the usual clubs and venues they play. They sounded great, and the inclusion of some stage effects was nice. The only downside for me was I always wish they include some more stuff from the DGC years in their set list. Overall, a great show. They will keep me coming back.

    sonic youth rocked massey hall!

    by mojave3 on 2009-07-19Massey Hall - Toronto

absolutely fantastic show. the 2nd time i have had the luxury of seeing sonic youth, last time was on the rather ripped tour and i love that album. i must admit i was suprised that sonic youth were playing in massey hall but the venue was excellent to see this amazing band. kim gordon looked amazing in a metallic silver dress and the rest of the band were excellent and played very well. the set began with an oldie "she is not alone" and then followed with a great deal of material from the new album - the eternal which is an excellent album in itself - encompassing the style and influences of the band from all of their previous albums in my opinion. sacred trickster, leaky lifeboat and anti-orgasm were definite highlights from the latest album. however the best part of the concert was saved for the last with the final song of the main set - pacific coast highway which was absolutely incredible and the final encore of death valley '69 had the entire crowd ecstatic. those 2 songs were worth the price of the concert ticket even had they only played those songs without anything else.

    A bit disappointing

by posthal on 2009-07-18Massey Hall - Toronto

They unfortunately forgot the subtlety of their guitar arrangements and dynamics. The concert was good, loud, noisy, but lacked what they do best : creating atmospheres (apart from the magnificent opener "She is not alone").

    Sonic Youth Rocked Massey Hall

by Lindski on 2009-07-17Massey Hall - Toronto

The opening band, The Entrance Band, was amazing and they set the tone for the rest of the show. Trippy feedback and heavy bass made me really interested to know more about the opening band. Sonic Youth played their less known music and this show was geared for the uber-Sonic Youth fan. The venue was perfect for the mood of the music. Massey hall is a sit-down venue and it wasn't until the end of the Sonic Youth show that people got out of their seats to dance. I really enjoyed this show and would love to see them again.

    Slightly innapropriate venue..

    by alex3397 on 2009-07-17Massey Hall - Toronto

Sonic Youth sounded great, Thurston Moore is a fantastic entertainer and it was great to see Ibold our there...But Massey Hall seems too uptight/strict a place to really enjoy a band like this. Still shouldn't really complain, was a great way to spend a Tuesday night.

    Sonic Youth Was Unforgettable!!

by agsharma on 2009-07-17Massey Hall - Toronto

It was a privilage to be able to see Sonic Youth and they did not disappoint at all. Their new album The Eternal is a great (not fabulous) album and they performed each song with gusto and a zeal that puts young rockers to shame. Highly reccommended.

    killer

    by Neil001 on 2009-07-16Massey Hall - Toronto

I never miss these guys when they're in town. Yes they've STILL got it. In fact, this was the tightest I've ever seen 'em.
