STEELY DAN IN CONCERT:

Steely Dan is responsible for some of the most complex, finely crafted classic rock of the 20th century, and they continue to deliver on tour more than 40 years after their debut. Core members Walter Becker and Donald Fagen are legendary for their musicianship, and they only surround themselves with the finest players, making for studio-perfect live renditions of their virtuosic compositions. Whether fans are out to wax nostalgic with "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" or sway in the breeze of "Hey Nineteen," Steely Dan never fails to deliver amaze, with another hit-filled tour planed for summer 2014.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Walter Becker and Donald Fagen met in the late '60s at Bard College in Upstate New York, writing songs together for several years before officially forming Steely Dan and releasing their first single "Dallas" in 1972. While the single sold poorly, their debut album Can't Buy a Thrill was released later that year to considerable critical and commercial success, landing the band their first hits with "Do It Again" and "Reelin' in the Years." They continued to climb the charts throughout the decade, reaching their peak position in 1977 with Aja, a No. 3 hit widely regarded as a seminal album of the classic rock era. Amid rumors of a return to the studio, the band will hit the road in 2014 for an extensive summer tour.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Steely Dan has been around so long they can play an entire concert of familiar songs and not run out. I personally like a band that can recreate the studio sound on stage well. SD does this better than anyone else."

” I cannot think of a time that I was ever disappointed by a Steely Dan show, and this concert was no different. From the minute they took the stage right on up until they left it (almost two hours later) we were presented with excellent music performed to perfection with some stories thrown in for good measure."

"Always a MUST SEE when Steely Dan comes to town! Each song was performed superbly by top-notch musicians. Every member of the band was featured. It was hit after hit, classic after classic."

    LOUSY set list

by steelyfan on 2013-07-25Constellation Brands–Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center: CMAC - Canandaigua

It pains me to say this as I am such a big Dan fan-I have traveled far and wide (including out of country) to see the band and this was my 9th show. The last two times I have seen SD the set list was lack lustre to say the least. It was apparent I was not the only one feeling this way with the level of applause from the crowd and the comments I heard walking out of the venue. First off, we don't want to go to hear the backup singers sing the songs. They are great and talented ladies but they are not the originators of the music. Second, Donald needs to level with Walter and tell him that he should no longer attempt to sing songs. His singing is horrible! Being such a perfectionist I am shocked that DF would allow this. They honestly seemed to be going through the motions throughout, with the excetption of a really unique version of Show Biz Kids that really grooved. They ended the evening with a string of such rehearsed hits that the audience seemed to like but that I have heard played for YEARS! Fellas, you have a huge library, how about mixing it up a bit for the true fans? My advice would be to attend only the album shows as at least you can be sure of the set list and know what you are getting yourself into. In a word-disappointed!

    Steely Dan was disappointing

by Rossum on 2013-07-24Molson Canadian Amphitheatre - Toronto

Being a fan of them for 30 years I had always wanted to see them. When the chance to see them in Toronto came up I jumped at the chance.I was expecting them to play alot of their hits but sadly they played more that I didn't know than what I did know. They played only one song from the Royal Scam, my favorite album of theirs

Steely Dan great as usual !

by steelydon1 on 2013-07-23Constellation Brands–Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center: CMAC - Canandaigua

Full disclosure: Written by hardcore fan. The venue is very nice. If you like high quality music, played by extremely talented musicians, then this band is the one for you. They played the hits for the casual walk up fans and some other songs maybe geared to us obsessive types! The opening act was Deep Blue Organ Trio, I have seen them play a few times, and they were really good in the role of openers, setting a nice cool groove to set the night. But once again, I have seen Steely Dan more than a dozen times and have never been disappointed. Usual show demographics: 50 to early 60s.(me) Great music by great musicians, you really don't even have to know the songs to enjoy the vast amount of talent on the stage. peace

Show was decent but they left out some of their best songs. Music was good but the dissapointment at the end wasn't. If your going, don't get your hopes up that your favourites will be played.

Steely Dan Mood Swings was a snooze

by StephanieNorthTO on 2013-07-22Molson Ampitheatre - Toronto

Such a disappointment! I was stoked to see Steely Dan live. What I ended up seeing was a great random band. I was really looking forward to some old favourites like “Rikki”, “Dirty Work”, “Do it Again”, Pretzel Logic”, Old School, Reelin’ and Bohisattva, but we got only the last three towards the end of the evening. Through most of the set-list, the audience was sitting as though they were watching a high school play. No swaying, no standing with arms in the air, no dancing or bopping. Many were surfing the net on their phones. I actually saw people sleeping – that’s right, SLEEPING with heads on chests --- through some of the numbers. Again, the band was tight, but fans weren’t there to see a band. They were there to see Steely Dan perform their favourite hits. This was a real letdown.

    A little disappointed..

by Dakotah on 2012-01-28Molson Amphitheater - Toronto

We saw Steely Dan in Toronto last year. I love the band their music but I walked away with not much enthusiasm. The music for me was too loud so it sounded to me a little distorted. I would have liked them to sing Do it Again which they never , a surprise to alot of people there. Would I go see them again ,not likely. I can at least say I saw them..I will still listen to their music because they are great artists. I was pumped up to see them too. sorry.

    WaMu Theater - Seattle - Sat, Jul 2, 2011

by Britisheh on 2011-10-03Wa Mu Theatre - Seattle

So, one bad review against 4 very good. Whilst everyone agrees that the venue was poor, I suppose there were a few other issues, but they were only given a spot by the negative reviewer. I have seen dozens of concerts, but Steely Dan only once. In Canada we just don't get the selection of artists. I have waited 40 years for this show, so my expectations were high. The show, interaction, personnel, and song choices were all quite good. They did play some tunes off their later albums, and surprisingly our negative reviewer didn't know them? I had the list at 18 songs, and although I would have enjoyed more from Pretzel Logic, two hours of music will be well remembered. Definitely will see them again as the quality of ALL their music is excellent, so a different set list next time will be worthy. The crowd was UP in the second half of the show, and EVERYONE around us was taping their feet, or bobbing their head. It must have been good! Cheers, British_eh

Steely Dan should be on everyones bucket list!

by HipestHipster on 2011-09-02Minnesota State Fair Grandstand - St Paul

They are artists that have always impressed me with their unique sound. I knew that they would have an impressive ensemble and they did not disappoint. They are just excellent musicians and arrangers that surround themselves with talent and consequently it adds up to a great show. The only downfall was the weather which my have had an effect on the sound which was not quite 100% but still very good.

    Good but not great

by BRIANR on 2011-09-01Minnesota State Fair Grandstand - St Paul

First time seeing them even though I've loved their music for 40 years. The band was tight, but Donald's voice seemed hoarse. The biggest trouble watching a band that has a huge catalogue of songs AND likes to improvise on stage is only a few favourites get showcased. Really dissapointed they didn't play my old school, but if that & the intermitent drizzle are my only real complaints then it was a good show.

    they Lost That Number

by tervan on 2011-08-15Molson Canadian Amphitheatre - Toronto

At first I wondered if it was just me, but then I heard other people complaining too. Although "Can't Buy a Thrill" had some great songs, it was "Pretzel Logic" that cemented me as a fan of Steely Dan. My favourite songs are "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" and "East St. Louis Toodle-Oo"; I was certain they would play the former and hoped for the latter. When they finished their encore and walked off the stage without having played either, I was shocked. Isn't a band supposed to give their audience what they want? How can they play a concert without including their most popular hit? I was comforted by the fact that others were upset too. Perhaps Steely Dan don't care what we think, but it won't win them any converts by disregarding what their fans want. (Fats Waller: "Find out what they like, how they like it, and give it to them when they want.") I left disappointed and can't see myself attending another Steely Dan concert.

    SET LIST WEAK

by steelyfan on 2011-07-27Constellation Brands Performing Arts Center - CMAC - Canandaigua

I have to begin by saying that I am the ultimate Dan fan. We travel out of country yearly to see the band or their various incarnations (Donald solo, Dukes of September etc.).I have seen them in 3 states and 2 provinces and it pains me to leave a mediocre review but the truth is the truth. The evening began with Aja-probably a lofty song to choose as their first tune as they do tend to warm up after a few. Donald did miss singing the first line of 2 verses of the song-for such a perfectionist that was very disappointing and shockingly unexpected. The set list was lacklustre -the hits are fine but true fans have tired of them. Another peeve is that Walter tends to say basically the same thing to the audience in his rambles-get a new schtick Walter! He also should not be allowed to sing anymore as it is painful to hear. All in all of the 8 times I have seen the band this was my least favorite show. Fine tune, regroup and perhaps start offering the album shows again so fans can hear what they want.

Great show, the Molson theater is great, but still a little too big for this kind of music. Would have preferred to see them in a smaller context.

    Steely Dan for generations!

by dnevers on 2011-07-25Molson Canadian Amphitheatre - Toronto

Steely Dan was excellent as usual. And I noticed a good many fans were mother and son, father and daughter, parents and sons, etc. A good sign that when our children grow up listening to fine musicians they become avid fans themselves. It was a great night enjoyed by all.

Band was fantastic. Venue...not so much

by Whip on 2011-07-24Molson Canadian Amphitheatre - Toronto

Steely Dan as usual was excellent! Top notch in every way. The Molson Amphitheater is in my humble opinion not the best to see a band of this caliber. We were in section 203 to the far left of stage. The sound was just one big drone, and it was hard to see much. We didn't even have a good view of the jumbotron. Add to that the guys next to us were drinking tall boys all night and had to go piddle every 5 minutes.... Also it was $20. just to park a million miles from the gate!? Anyway, my rating is not for the band. There isn't a mark high enough for that... They were outstanding! But the amphitheater will not see me again. If all you want to do is 'party.. I recommend the venue. But if you actuLly want to enjoy the music... Go anywhere else.

    Steely Dan rocked

by Rosssy on 2011-07-24Molson Canadian Amphitheatre - Toronto

It was a great night in Toronto with a great band lined up, the warm up act trio were very good. As for the main act, I have been waiting to see this band for over 30 years, although they sounded great and never missed a beat, the song selections could have been more of their popular hits, lots of jazzy blues , would have loved to hear more songs like, Ricky don,t lose that number, do it again. Overall very entertaining, and great to see Donald Faygan on stage.
