STEELY DAN IN CONCERT:

Steely Dan is responsible for some of the most complex, finely crafted classic rock of the 20th century, and they continue to deliver on tour more than 40 years after their debut. Core members Walter Becker and Donald Fagen are legendary for their musicianship, and they only surround themselves with the finest players, making for studio-perfect live renditions of their virtuosic compositions. Whether fans are out to wax nostalgic with "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" or sway in the breeze of "Hey Nineteen," Steely Dan never fails to deliver amaze, with another hit-filled tour planed for summer 2014.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Walter Becker and Donald Fagen met in the late '60s at Bard College in Upstate New York, writing songs together for several years before officially forming Steely Dan and releasing their first single "Dallas" in 1972. While the single sold poorly, their debut album Can't Buy a Thrill was released later that year to considerable critical and commercial success, landing the band their first hits with "Do It Again" and "Reelin' in the Years." They continued to climb the charts throughout the decade, reaching their peak position in 1977 with Aja, a No. 3 hit widely regarded as a seminal album of the classic rock era. Amid rumors of a return to the studio, the band will hit the road in 2014 for an extensive summer tour.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Steely Dan has been around so long they can play an entire concert of familiar songs and not run out. I personally like a band that can recreate the studio sound on stage well. SD does this better than anyone else."

” I cannot think of a time that I was ever disappointed by a Steely Dan show, and this concert was no different. From the minute they took the stage right on up until they left it (almost two hours later) we were presented with excellent music performed to perfection with some stories thrown in for good measure."

"Always a MUST SEE when Steely Dan comes to town! Each song was performed superbly by top-notch musicians. Every member of the band was featured. It was hit after hit, classic after classic."

    Aja

by BigSteelyDanFan on 2009-11-26Massey Hall - Toronto

Aja was a bit too laid back to be listened to from start to finish. The concert really took off when they finished playing Aja. Donald's voice is not what it used to be but it still works. Thought Aja would be difficult to pull off in a live venue. They managed to do it. Backup singers and musicians were really great. I liked the opening act but would have come at 9 pm had I known. Concerts for old guys like me should be over at 10pm on a weekday.

    Steely Dan

by thegk on 2009-11-26Massey Hall - Toronto

outstanding. band is tight, sound at Massey Hall is excellent. Right from the opening note of "Black Cow" it was vintage Steely Dan. If you are going for the 2nd night (I wish I were) you are in for a treat.

    "Aja" rendition was simply amazing!!!

by Lungo on 2009-11-26Massey Hall - Toronto

From the first moment to the last, the Steely Dan sound was as I remember it from the "Aja" and "Gaucho" records. I am specially attached to the "Aja" record, since when I bought it - my rock attachment was gone and new era or jazz rock listening began. Thank you Steely Dan for opening my eyes ;-)

    Dan in Motown!

by BobbyLove on 2009-09-09MotorCity Casino Hotel - Detroit

Steely Dan at the Motor City Casino surpassed my expectations! The venue at Motor City Casino is excellent. Its small, cozy and intimate with easy access to the bars. I would definitely revisit this venue, it is the best Casino concert experience I've had. The band was great! They opened with a jazz instrumental before Walter and Donald came out to kick things off with Black Friday, and they cruised through a setlist of mostly classic favourites from their repertoire from the 70's, nothing here from the more recent albums. The backup singers took the vocals on Dirty Work and Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart, which I believe is a Supremes song, so there is nice tribute to the good folks of Detroit.

Good concert - good thing these guys need money to pay the rent! The audience wanted a second encore with "Ricky dont lose that number" - but didn't get it.

    AJA better "Live" than recorded!

by Developmentman on 2009-09-05The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

Concert started with Kid Charlemagne, featuring Larry Carlton who was on the original, and who's renowned for having played one of the best guitar solos ever recorded. Keith Carlock was simply incredible on drums... Walter Becker was somewhat withdrawn, enjoying the gig around him. Fagen was on top of it all and Larry seemed surprised by the reception from the most enthusiastic crowd I have been given to be with - and I've seen many concerts since '68 ...even attended Woodstock... All in all, a tight group of true pros who gave an entertaining 2h10min of the best music there is...rock morphed in semi-smooth jazz... THANK YOU and may Dan perform again and again...I know they'll live forever!

    Las Vegas Performance

by Mills on 2009-08-31Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort - Las Vegas

The band and sound quality was incredible. The only complaint was it was only 90 minutes long and only one song for the encore. The boys could easily have played all night

Steely Dan is considered a mainsteream act now

by normscot on 2009-08-10The MGM Grand at Foxwoods - Mashantucket

I have been fortunate enough to see Steely Dan several times during the last decade and I guess the magic of them returning to the stage has worn off for me. Steely Dan was known for being progressive and reclusive, but now that it's common for them to tour, their song selection has been tightened so much that it's feeling more like a Moody Blues or Steve Miller Band show. This concert I saw was strictly the hits and built for "soccer moms" and not hard-core fans. I may have been one of the few people who thought they released two excellent jazz-crossover albums since their 2000 comeback---they played nothing from them!! The show was painfully predictable and by the end I had to grasp at the quality of the sound rather than the content for something positive to say. This show was the one to bring your friend to who keeps telling you that they’ve never heard of Steely Dan because by the end they’d be saying "I've heard these songs all my life". I understand on this tour Steely Dan is playing some shows where they'll play an entire album. Unfortunately they're not playing my favorite album. The "generic" show I saw might as well have been considered the Aja album show as only two tracks were omitted.

    Surreal

by novascotians on 2009-08-07Beacon Theatre - New York

First time in NYC, first time at the Beacon, first time seeing Steely Dan. All were sensational. We travelled from Nova Scotia to be in NYC for an 8 day, 20th wedding anniversary celebration. The Aja + concert was the event we looked forward to the most. We were not disappointed. Even though Donald was not feeling well ( we found out the next day ), it didn't prevent him from giving his best to please his audience, and Walter and the band sounded fantastic. The 'girls' harmonies were amazing. It was excellent from beginning to end. Being surrounded by enthusiastic fellow Steely Dan fans at The Beacon was an awesome feeling. I've been a fan since I wore out my Countdown To Ecstasy 8-Track in the 70's. Hearing 'My Old School' was surreal. It was a concert we'll be talking about for a long time. We hope they continue to tour ( maybe to Nova Scotia? ) and continue to add to their special and one of a kind music catalogue. Like The Allman Brothers Band, with Steely Dan there can be no copies, only the originals........
