It was ok - but not really a very good outcome

Saw the amazing Steve Earle 35 years ago a year before we were married in 1990. I was already a huge fan, as a CKUA listener and early devoted Edmonton Folk Fest attendee. I invited my then-boyfriend (now husband) as a bit of a test, which obviously he passed, though I had a moment of doubt when he hesitated joining the line-up, and commented on the "tough crowd,"I guess referring to people with tattoos and possibly wearing biker colours. Oblivious and already star-struck at the idea of being in Steve's presence, I gushed something like, "yeah, isn't it great!"Still felt the same way with our seats in row 9 to the right of the stage at River Cree. Our experience is this is often a pretty raw crowd; there seem to be a lot of comps at this venue, and it is at a casino, with bar service at both ends of the venue, so let's just say people aren't always as dedicated to the performance as they might be at a more controlled, staid location. That said, even prepared, it was a raucous crowd, more inebriated than I'd seen at several previous shows, packing back the hiballs and calling for Copperhead Road before the first few warm-up songs. Steve, no doubt more than prepared, was amazing and so professional, a real trouper, even as he asked the crowd at one point to "quiet down"so he could do one of his legendary intros to a song. Despite the rude, disrespectful bunch behind us who continued to yell throughout, until my husband turned around to loudly tell them they had to stop, which they did not, and we got up and found empty seats where the crowd was actually listening, Steve Earle was his usual fabulous, raspy, story-telling best, including some newer material most of the crowd didn't seem to know, written for a documentary on a mine disaster in West Virginia that killed 29 men, whose names are front and centre in Steve's song. Steve, the crowd at River Cree in Enoch/Edmonton did not represent us true fans, who maybe had a couple of brewskis before the concert, and sat near the front to see and hear and revel in the mastery of a storyteller, poet, singer, guitar player at the top of his game. No apologies were needed for your voice, etc. though being Canadian, I wanted to say sorry for the smoke, for the rowdy boors, for the asinine non-fans drunkenly calling for Copperhead Road when you were talking about your son and the permanent hole that is left in your heart. Know that there were more of us than them, there at River Cree, on Friday, August 16, and we were listening, and we heard you, and were blown away.
Stacey Earle is always someone one should see. He is Iconic. His talent in singing and songwriting is is lmmeasureable and his relationships with entertainers along the way inspiring. His conversation about Guy Clark, Steve Van Zandt and Jerry Jeff Walker interesting as was his story of losing his son as tragic as this was. Thank you for taking me back Steve. You are truly a gem.
Great performance, it was a pleasure to see him in his country music glory.
It was a fantastic show. A privilege to hear him sing his songs and talk about his life. I’d happily go again!
There is so much depth and social and personal commitment to this man that his performance left me deeply inspired. I knew it would be so in my heart, but when it actually happened it left me truly amazed. So much love. Happy trails sweet man.
I didn’t enjoy the opening act that much, maybe because I didn’t know there was one? However, I enjoyed Steve Earle very much! His voice is a bit rough from his COPD but I stilled loved to see and hear him in person. Great venue. Not too big so even though my seat was further back I could still see him.
The opening act, Olivia Wolfe turned out to be a pleasant surprise, with a nice voice and writing her own songs, she had a great sense of humor and was ready to play, we were impressed, hope to see her in Vancouver again soon. It was awesome seeing Steve play in a smaller venue just by himself, and his crew seem very polished. We found out that Steve was suffering from the smoke from fires in the US and it was triggering his COPD, a lot of singers would have stopped the show or cancelled all together, but no Steve got up there and sang and put on a hell of a show having the crowd clapping and singing along and doing an encore. I would highly recommend going to see him live.
Seen him 3 times this was the best Saw him at the commadore and in a casino in Edmonton this by far was the best
I really enjoyed the show. The venue was great (first time there). Olivia Wolf impressed as the opener. Steve got off to a bit of a rough start with his voice but with a little help he sounded a lot better as the show went on. He is a great storyteller.
Love seeing how Steve Earle constantly reinvents the presentation of his material. Solo or with his fantastic back up choices (redhead included) he never disappoints
The opening was Olivia Wolf and she was good. She worked the crowd well and was fun. Good warm up for Steve Earle. Steve was good. He had some major issues with his voice in the first part of the show as his. COPD was not being kind to him. Despite that his passion for his songs and the stories he told about them made up for his vocal issues. It was nice to have just Steve on stage - no band. We got to hear and feel just him. It was worth the ticket price in my opinion.
His voice is definitely not the same but the man sure knows how to play guitar and harmonica! Fantastic intimate show! Shared stories of his personal life
Steve is a great entertainer as well as a songwriter. His dialogue telling about his mentors and experience was unforgettable. Yes, his voice was ragged but he performed well for an hour and a half. He finished with Copperhead Road and if that wasn't enough he spoke about great Canadian songwriters and about how Townes Van Zandt taught him a song which led to an encore, Summer Wages by Ian Tyson with the great line "and we'll keep rollin on till we get to Vancouver. How cool is that?
We really enjoyed our concert. This was our first time at this venue and as we were told to bring a small sized purse only I had changed to one, and only brought my phone and credit card. I did not know that I would not be able to enter the casino (where the majority of the restaurants were located) without showing my physical drivers license. Hence we only had one option for dinner which was a little disappointing. The concert was great, good seats and good sound.
Always enjoy hearing Steve Earle. Being a long time fan, I thoroughly loved his ‘old stuff’ which he played right away in the first set-Really enjoyed hearing his stories of how songs came about or where we was at while writing them
The show was great. First up, Leroy. Just him and his guitar. Then game Steve Earle. Again, just him and his guitar, or mandolin. Great show. Only 3 stars because of the venue, MTelus. A beautiful concert hall. The sound was great. The tables on the floor section were definitely too close together. It was very difficult trying to maneuver your way to the bathroom because there was no space between the tables. Other than that problem, it would be a 5 star rating for the concert
Steve Earle delivers great songs and stories. Acoustics were great
Steve Earle never disappoints with his music and storytelling mixture of his well life earned memories. Algonquin College theater is becoming a premier venue gem in Ottawa.
I really enjoyed the show. It was perfectly intimate and Steve was very interactive with the audience. Was touched that he shared such personal experiences with the audience. He is a true craftsman.
