About

Steve Miller has been an enlivening presence on the American music scene for more than half a century - and, in the course of that era, his releases have sold tens of millions of records and been streamed several billion times. Miller's Greatest Hits 1974-78 received the RIAA Diamond Award with sales of more than fifteen million copies. It is among the 25 best-selling albums of all time.

At the start of his career, Miller soon became a mainstay of the San Francisco music scene that upended American culture in the late '60s. With albums like Children of the Future, Sailor and Brave New World, Miller perfected a psychedelic blues sound that drew on the deepest sources of American roots music and simultaneously articulated a compelling vision of what music - and, indeed, society - could be in the years to come.

Then, in the '70s, Miller crafted a brand of pure pop that was smart, polished, exciting and irresistible - and that dominated radio in a way that few artists have ever managed. Hit followed hit in what seemed like an endless flow: "The Joker," "Take the Money and Run," "Rock'n Me," "Fly Like an Eagle," "Jet Airliner," "Jungle Love," "Swingtown" and "Abracadabra," among them. To this day, those songs are instantly recognizable when they crop up online or on the radio - and impossible not to sing along with. Their hooks are the very definition of indelible.

Running through Miller's distinctive catalog is a combination of virtuosity and song craft. And that's no accident. His parents were jazz aficionados - not to mention close friends of Les Paul and Mary Ford - so, as a budding guitarist, Miller absorbed valuable lessons from that musical tradition. When the family moved to Texas, Miller deepened his education in the blues, eventually relocating to Chicago, where he played with Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Buddy Guy and Paul Butterfield. That range of sources informs his music to this day.

In recent years, Miller has fully immersed himself in the blues and its many byways. As he has always done, he continues to find creative outlets for the full panoply of his musical passions. On his successful tours with the Steve Miller Band, he complements the commercial peaks of his extensive catalogue with lesser-known songs that expand his fans' awareness of the range of his work. As a member of the Board of Directors at Jazz at Lincoln Center, he has curated and headlined a series of shows that explore themes like the bridge from blues to jazz in the music of guitar great T-Bone Walker; the distinctive sounds of the blues triangle of Memphis, Texas and Chicago; the resonances between the singular musical creations of Ma Rainey and Miles Davis; the deep American roots music of Appalachia; and Cannonball Adderley and the Blues. In addition, at the request of Wynton Marsalis, he is defining a blues pedagogy for Jazz at Lincoln Center. He is also a member of the visiting committee of the Department of Musical Instruments at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Indeed, five of his guitars were displayed in "Play It Loud: The Instruments of Rock and Roll," a groundbreaking exhibition at the Met that ran for six months in 2019. Miller was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016 and has been elected for induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2022. He has recently begun to open his vaults for the first time, releasing the acclaimed Welcome to the Vault box set in 2019 and Breaking Ground Live! August 3, 1977 in 2021.

With each listen the beauty and immediacy of Miller's work, whether at its most playful or most serious, is palpable. As always, whether he was riding the top of the charts or traveling the endless blue highways of American music, you can hear him playing and singing with conviction and precision, passion and eloquence, making music that is at once immediately accessible, thrillingly alive in the present, respectful of the past, and more than able to stand the test of time. - Anthony DeCurtis

    Steve Miller tour

by PatbigFans on 2010-07-01Molson Canadian Amphitheatre - Toronto

Steve Miller can certainly bring in some crowds with his past but the sound system was HORRIBLE. Rarely could you hear what Steve was saying and the sound was blasted all over the place. It was a huge disappointment for it was the one show we wanted to see.... The songs can still take you back to the moment... but at times one had to try to remember...what song is this!

    Steve Miller still going strong

by Joto on 2010-07-01Molson Canadian Amphitheatre - Toronto

I thought Steve Miller was fantastic after all these years. It was a nice surprise having Colin James sit in for a few songs as he is also a great performer! Steve Miller is a down to earth musician and told a few stories during his concert for eg. how he got back his stolen guitar 3 years after it was stolen from him during a flight to perform at a friends wedding. I seen Steve Miller 30 years ago and enjoyed his show then and still enjoy him 30 years later!!! Keep on playing Steve!!!

Fantastic guitar work, but muddy vocals

by DementedOne on 2010-07-01Molson Canadian Amphitheatre - Toronto

Both Colin James and Steve Miller Band were absolutely flawless performers, who gave their all and put on a great show. Loved the swirling guitar galaxy set with the rainbow LEDs, and loved that SMB played for 2 hours straight with only guitar changes instead of costume changes. However, because SMB came on exactly at 8:45 without any sound checks, I had a great deal of difficulty understanding Steve Miller when he spoke/sang. The music drowned his singing out out half of the time, and the audience drowned out the speaking most of the time. Other than that, it was an absolutely amazing concert and I'd be glad to attend again.

    Blew me away

by Torontonian on 2010-07-01Molson Amphitheater - Toronto

I had good expectations for this show, but not immensely high. I was sorely mistaken. I was amazed and how much Steve Miller still rocks after all these years. Many artists begin to lose their voice after 40-odd years, but Steve still sounds as good as he did in the 70's. Even on the songs I wasn't familiar with, I found myself standing up, cheering, and dancing. I've seen bands like AC/DC, Muse and U2 live, but I have to admit that my experience seeing Steve Miller ranks right up there with them. Could not be more satisfied.

    Steve Miller was excellent!!

by BellaS on 2009-08-31Casino Rama - Orillia

Steve Miller Band was an excellent concert! They started out strong with some good tunes. They drifted a little in the middle - lots of guitar rifts, new songs, different singer (but he had GREAT dance moves) but they finished strong with lots of great oldies which is what i came to hear anyway. Great ending with a four song anchor!

    Steve Miller still amazes!

by Kornflakes on 2009-08-31Casino Rama - Orillia

The show was great! There was not enough room to dance, and the venue drew a very peculiar crowd but Steve Miller and the band were awesome! Suny danced all night long and the band could not have been mpre accomodating accepting requests and playing some songs twice because they were just that good!! They definately wanted to please their fans playing all of their greatest hits and keeping the new songs to a minimum. Lots of tributes to show off their musical abilities. I will see them the next time they come to town for sure!

by Technogeek on 2009-08-28Casino Rama - Orillia

What a GREAT show! Not only did the Steve Miller Band play all our old favourites, but also gave us a good sampling of some new music they've been recording. The addition of Johnny and his blues made the show that much better. I've been raving to all who would listen foe the last 3 days....

    Steve Miller Better Without Sonny

    by Socrdog3 on 2009-08-27Casino Rama - Orillia

For a long time fan of the Steve Miller Band, Tuesday night's show proved Steve and the Band hadn't lost anything over the years. His voice was still great and the guitar work was everything I had hoped for. His tribute to Les Paul was nice. I would have given the show a 10/10 except for the most annoying new member to the Band, Sonny Charles. Don't get me wrong, Mr. Charles is a fine singer with a motown style. However, I paid to see Steve Miller and Sonny's dancing was distracting. If this is what the new album is going to be, I won't be buying it. I'm giving the show a 7/10 taking away one mark for each song Sonny sang. Also, I would have liked to hear Heart Like A Wheel.
