About

Three-time Grammy Award-winning guitarist, producer, songwriter, and composer Steve Vai has spent decades playing solo and in some of the most influential rock groups of the 20th and 21st Centuries. Ranked among the 20 best guitarists of the decade by Guitar World magazine in 2019, Vai has played with rock legends like Frank Zappa, David Lee Roth, Whitesnake and more, and sold more than 15 million records. He has also recorded with a wide range of artists such as Public Image Ltd, Mary J. Blige, Spinal Tap, and Alice Cooper, and toured with live-only acts like G3, Zappa Plays Zappa and the Experience Hendrix tour.

Born in Carle Place, New York, in 1960, Vai began playing guitar as a child and spent his high school years playing in local bands. He attended Berklee College Of Music and worked for Frank Zappa as a transcriptionist. Relocating to Los Angeles, Vai toured with Zappa, who nicknamed Vai "Stunt Guitarist" and "Little Italian Virtuoso," and played on Zappa albums such as 1981's Tinsel Town Rebellion and You Are What You Is, 1982's Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch, 1983's The Man From Utopia, and 1984's Them or Us and Thing-Fish.

In the mid-'80s, Vai set out on his own, recording two solo albums: 1984's Flex-Able and Flex-Able Leftovers. Also in the 1980s, Vai joined the Van Halen-inspired rock outfit Alcatrazz and made a cameo appearance in the movie Crossroads, where he played the Devil's guitarist. Soon, he landed a gig as the guitarist in David Lee Roth's newly formed solo band and played on the group's 1986 debut album Eat 'Em And Smile. Vai also played on the group's follow-up album, Skyscraper (1988). In 1988, Vai released his own line of guitars via Ibanez: the Jam 777 series.

After Skyscraper, Vai left Roth's band to work on another solo album (Passion And Warfare) and joined Whitesnake, with whom he recorded 1989's Slip Of The Tongue. He also released a seven-string guitar that eventually caught on with late-'90s nu-metal acts like Korn and Limp Bizkit.

In the early '90s, Vai formed a new band, VAI, and hired Devin Townsend on vocals, T.M. Stevens on bass, and Terry Bozzio on drums. The group released one album in 1993 called Sex & Religion. Two years later, he released an all-instrumental EP, Alien Love Secrets. Additional '90s solo projects included 1996's Fire Garden, 1998's Flex-Able Leftovers (a re-release of his out-of-print sophomore solo album with added tracks), and 1999's The Ultra Zone

In the early 2000s, Vai released the compilation instrumental album The 7th Song: Enchanting Guitar Melodies - Archives Vol. 1 and a live record, Alive In An Ultra World. In 2001, Vai also released his career-spanning box set: the 10-disc The Secret Jewel Box. In 2002, Vai compiled a series of compositions he'd done for films such as Crossroads and the theme to Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey and put them together on a 40-track collection dubbed The Elusive Light and Sound, Vol. 1.

In 2005, Vai returned after a hiatus with Real Illusions: Reflections and toured with the Metropole Orchestra, releasing a double live album, Sound Theories, Vols. 1 & 2 (2007). In 2010, Vai teamed with the North Netherlands Orchestra, marrying rock compositions with orchestral arrangements. He called the partnership his "Evo Era."

Also in 2010, Vai did a number of televised performances with contemporary artists like Mary J. Blige, Orianthi, Travis Barker, Ron Fair, and Randy Jackson. Two years later, he dropped his eighth studio album, The Story Of Light, which notably featured a duet with Aimee Mann.

In 2015, Vai released a recording of an October 2012 show, Stillness In Motion: Vai Live In L.A. He later released 2016's Modern Primitive, which featured updated material from the 1980s. In 2022, Vai released his 10th studio album, Inviolate, which debuted at No. 1 on the Current Hard Rock Albums chart.

Vai/Zakk/Malmsteen - When All Hell Broke Loose !!!

by Vikash on 2016-07-23Massey Hall - Toronto

Vai stood out with his Master peace solos just to be overshadowed by Malmsteen with his style and elegance.... Zakk Wylde playing NIB got the audience into a frenzy and Bettencourt's Acoustic Solo left all of us Spell Bound - Abasi the new kid on the Block was excellent too .... All in all Guitaring Gods descended on Earth from Hell !!!! Massey Hall has one of the Best Acoustics in the World when it come to Concert Halls - Even the Great Joe Satriani said Massey Hall is his favorite venue and he would pay to see Steve Vai perform here !!!

    Guitar Gods Strike

    by BigMac007 on 2016-05-16Massey Hall - Toronto

If you like guitar players, this was the place to be. I was impressed by them all but especially Nuno Bettencourt who not only played his ass off but showed he had a great sense of humor as well - chatting with the crowd and telling very funny stories.

by Putziietaters on 2016-05-12Massey Hall - Toronto

This show was unbelievable from start to finish. An amazing lineup of incredible musicians. It was an incredible show of talent and sitting up close and personal made it that much more worth every penny spent. To have these hugely talented guys in one show was just something I will never forget.

    gen AXE

by shredR on 2016-05-10Massey Hall - Toronto

Generation Axe was a great idea - hopefully we will see additional performances with various guitarists in the future! Tosin Abasi is an amazing player, adding a new and different dimension to guitar playing with his eight-string technique. I had heard about Nuno Bettencourt back in the 80's from the band Extreme - now I have a better idea of the depth of his talent. I have to say that Zack Wylde did not impress me as the others did - he is a good player, but his extended solos do not feel very inspired - I thought the riffs were kinda shallow. To be far, I did like his acoustic work on Book of the Dead II. Yngwie Malmsteen is still a master of neoclassical shred. His technique is amazing, however the "posing" gets a bit tiresome, and a bit laughable at this stage. Steve Vai - what can one say about one of the greatest guitarists around? Amazing set, amazing technique. In my mind, perhaps second only to Joe Satriani, altough Steve Vai's work seems even more "out there" at times. Overall great show. My ears did fine, except when Zack Wylde came out with his overamplified (?) extended riffage. Only then did I wish I had brought some hearing protection. Believe me, I have been to a LOT of concerts, and at my age, sometimes I need it! TTYL

    Great event

by Joralbert on 2016-05-07Massey Hall - Toronto

It's great to see five of the greatest musicians in a single show, great venue, Amazing Vai, Zakk, Nuno, Tosin Absi is out of this world, but Malmsteen, as the great guitar master he is, has become "noisy". But, a great concert, it was worth to see all of them

    Generation Axe

by CSpot on 2016-05-07Massey Hall - Toronto

every guitarist on that stage was phenomenal but I was disappointed that Steve Vai only played 2 of his songs. :( I think that they should have cut Zakk Wylde and Yngvie by 10 minutes so that Steve could have played more songs. But.... it was an incredible concert. everyone killed it

    my ears are still ringing

by naps on 2016-05-07Massey Hall - Toronto

There's no mistaking the incredible talents and skill of each artist performing wednesday night. Each player has the ability to fill a concert hall. Unfortunately, sheer blistering finger speed wears thin after about an hour.

    Nuno Stole the Show

by AxeWanttoBe on 2016-05-07Massey Hall - Toronto

It was an awesome show. Zakk Wild needs to learn that 20 minutes solo's just get old fast. It awesome when all of the guitar masters played together. It would have been a five star if the whole show was them playing together, maybe with a couple the masters songs independently (not 20 minute shreds). Nuno was wayyyyyyyyyy better than I thought that he would be, he stole the show, had the most applause, and people seemed to like what he was playing the best. I would recommend seeing the show, but i woulld not go again, unless they change their format.

    One helluva Guitarist!

by guitarzann on 2013-11-11Casino Rama - Rama

My wife and I saw Steve Vai for the first time and thoroughly loved it. Being big guitar Jazz fans and having seen players such as Al Dimeola and Pat Meheny several times it was very nice to go and see a player who rastes up there with the best Jazz players in the world. We did not expect the showmanship he puts out which was an added bonus, i can see what frank Zappa saw in him all those years, we thank you Steve Vai, even at 56 years of age young it frickin rocked!! Dave and Terry Webb!!

    Never stops getting better!

    by Brent123 on 2013-11-11Casino Rama - Rama

I've seen Steve Vai a few times now, and every time I see him, the show is better and better. I don't know exactly what it is, but I enjoyed every single moment. The night rushed through so fast, I was stunned when he said just 2 more songs! The back drop was his cover art for his latest albumn. The band was Dave Weiner on guitar, Philip Binoe on bass and Jeremy on drums. Just a fantastic band, skill beyond all belief!!! Steve's music is from the heart containing such soul and emotion. Some of the highlights were Steve's space costume, Jeremy's potable drum kit, and of course the guitar dialing between Steve and Dave, and the crowd involvement on writing a new song was fun... simply an amazing show! It is a true testament of a performers art, that the moment I got home and all the next day, I worked on my own guitar riffs inspired by such magical and enlightening display of guitar playing at its very best.

Steve Vai on fire at the Commodore!

    by eman8888 on 2012-10-09Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

Last Friday's appearance of Steve Vai at the Commodore was nothing short of amazing. His band including regulars Dave Weiner(lead and rhythm guitars)and Jeremy Colson(Drums)were at the top of their game as usual. Can't remember the bassist's name but he was definitely in the pocket all night. Plus Deborah(again not sure of her last name)on electric harp was a pleasant surprise(that is when you could hear her-she was drowned out mostly by Steve and Dave's guitars). Overall the band was in perfect sync throughout the 2 and 3/4 hour show. Biggest highlight of the night was during "The Ultra Zone" where Steve comes out in a space superhero outfit with flashing lights and lasers on his fingers plus a weird but cool looking futuristic guitar. Vai is still truly one of the best rock guitarists around and I would highly recommend seeing him!

    Showed great control

by vaijunior on 2012-09-24Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

My fourth time watching him and it was still amazing. Good varied setlist from across his many albums, luckily I had great seats in the 8th row aisle. Band was great too, Dave Weiner as always is a steady rhythm player, Philip Bynoe and Jeremy Colson were great together. Harp player was decent too.
