STEVEN TYLER IN CONCERT:

Rock and roll icon and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler has wowed fans with his inimitable style and virtuosic singing for the past 40-plus years, and he continues to drive fans wild with his legendary showmanship and signature soaring vocals. Now, he's stepping away from "The Bad Boys from Boston" for the first time ever to embark on a solo tour, the appropriately titled Steven Tyler…Out on a Limb Tour. In addition to performing Aerosmith classics like "Walk This Way," "Dream On," and "Sweet Emotion," Tyler will treat ticket buyers to a whole new dynamic when he tackles the bluegrass and country selections off his 2016 album We're All Somebody from Somewhere. Whether he's branching out into new styles or kicking out the arena rock anthems he helped make famous with Aerosmith, Steven Tyler is sure to bring the house down with his powerhouse vocals and trademark charisma.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Aerosmith formed in 1970 after Steven Tyler convinced a group of first-rate New England-area musicians to move into a Boston apartment together. They went on to become the highest-selling American rock act in history thanks to classic hits like "Walk This Way" and "Dream On." The band entered a rough patch in the early-'80s that saw the departures of guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford, but things were back on track by mid-decade when the classic lineup reunited. They got a boost in 1986 when Tyler was tapped by rappers Run D.M.C. for their cover of "Walk This Way, a major hit that introduced Aerosmith to a new generation of fans. The band struck while the iron was hot and released 1987's Permanent Vacation, which went five times platinum and earned them heavy video rotation on MTV and VH1. Aerosmith's reign continued in the '90s with albums like 1993's Get a Grip, a massive commercial success that earned them two Grammys. They had another banner year in 2001, playing the Super Bowl XXXV Halftime Show and getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In addition to his work with Aerosmith, Tyler has become a widely recognized celebrity in his own right, notably appearing as a judge on American Idol from 2010 to 2015. He thrilled fans in 2016 with the announcement of his first solo record, the country-influenced We're All Somebody from Somewhere. No matter what style he's working in, Steven Tyler always delivers a performance worthy of a music legend with undeniable skill and tons of infectious energy.

    Steven Tyler.....legendary!

by MauiBabe on 2016-09-16Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

Loved, loved, loved the show. I have seen Aerosmith about 4 times and to see Steven venture out on this tour was absolutely incredible. He did not disappoint. About 75% of the show covered his popular tracks with Aerosmith and the rest from his new album. All of it was just great.

One of the BEST performances I've ever seen!

by Jurusula on 2016-09-14Sony Centre - Toronto

Steven Tyler was amazing. I can't believe he can still sing those notes! AWESOME. The band was really tight. I loved the fiddle, the banjo and piano. Started the night with some old Beatles tunes and Janice Joplin - which was so fun! Played lots of Aerosmith hits and some songs from his new album. Had a great night. the venue was intimate so that made everyone feel close to the stage. It's too bad that so many people came to the show but watched it through their phone while they were recording every moment. This show was truly enjoyable - if they come back, I'm there!

    Steven Tyler was...disappointing

by JeffG on 2016-07-13Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

I loved Steven Tyler when he was on American Idol. I loved Steven Tyler when he was with Aerosmith (at least most of the time). I guess I'm just past my prime. Sunday night I didn't love Steven Tyler. I went wanting to hear him sing and revel in the music. And while a little conversation with the audience is enjoyable, Steven talked all night resting for 5 minutes between songs. The band "Loving Mary" was very good- a pleasure to watch and listen too. And I applaud Stevens commitment to "Janies Fund" and the plight of abused women that is obviously close to his heart. That's great. But as a concert, Steven signing is good. Steven rambling is interesting until it's not. Now in full disclosure, I did not stay past 1/3 of the concert. Everyone was standing from the first time Steven walked on stage and my wife and I can't and won't stand for 90 minutes. That said, when he was good it was good. There just wasn't enough of that.

    Steven is a ROCK star

by MsBC on 2016-07-13Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

First off it’s Steven Tyler up close and personal so it was well worth the ticket price!! His voice is amazing - in a small theater with great acoustics he proved that his voice is as good if not better than it was 45yrs ago. That being said, I really do not like his voice singing country - it's just not suited to him and does not showcase the power of his vocals. The crowd was mostly there for Steven the rock star and not Steven the country bumpkin. We listen politely to the country tunes and roared and cheered with each Aerosmith song. I would have preferred a solo blues album (yes I know Aerosmith did do Honkin on Bobo) or even an album of him covering some other classics but country – no. The new album does have some catchy tunes on it that I am sure Steven could rework into rock songs if he wanted to. They were okay to listen to but Steven singing country is just not my preferred style for him. I think he could have chosen better Aerosmith songs to throw in the mix - of course he has to do cult favourites Sweet Emotion and Dream On but I think with Aerosmith's catalogue he could have found ones that suited the evening better and flowed with his county theme. I would have omitted Janie’s Got a Gun – Steven’s slow twangy version had me ready to take Janie’s gun and shoot myself. That song is so powerful lyrically and matched with the right music and musical tones and “shock” moments – it’s a dramatic song and spine chilling. Sunday’s version was hard to listen to and frankly just an awful rendition – all drama was lost!! I am not sure why Jaded and Walk This Way were in the set list – yes good songs but not “country” at all – again I think a better mix could have been designed. Come Together another fan favourite but mixing a Beatles cover in just didn’t make sense to me. The only Aerosmith song that really fit the bill was Cryin – it’s got the makings of a good country song. I am not sure if the set list was designed to keep the audience awake and entertained thus the picking of the top 10 well known Aerosmith favourites for" sing alongs" mixed in amongst lesser known country tunes. Please don’t get me wrong – I love all the Aerosmith tunes but I just felt they did not flow as well as some lesser known top 10 but equally as good Aerosmith songs might have. Steven could have even gone further out on a limp with his set list. The band – Loving Mary, well let’s just say they will all be going back to their day jobs after riding Steven’s coat tails. They are a session band – everyone can play an instrument but no one is really talented. They stood on stage like they were all strangers – no gelling – no fun. There was not one member who was a great musician that could pull the others to up their game – everyone was mediocre and it showed. I was surprised, being that Steven is so multi-talented and a perfectionist that he would chose a bar band as his backing band. They could play country but they could not play the Aerosmith songs – there was just not the guitar talent – again a reason I would have chosen different Aerosmith songs. Sweet Emotion is a vocal led song so any band could play the music to it but take Train Kept a Rollin it’s an instrument song and they could not keep up with it or play it as it was meant to be played. I would have chosen Baby Please Don’t Go – if you listen to the music behind the lyrics you could add a banjo or an accordion and it would work and Loving Mary would have been able to show some skills. Same can be said for Rattlesnake Shake again Loving Mary is not the band to play this. Now Suzie McNeil – love the girl – she’s a power house – excellent vocals. She stood up front with Steven but it was clear she was a backup singer and could have been standing 20 feet behind him. I felt like she was one step from being a trained monkey, every time I looked over she was strapping on a different instrument – the accordion = really! All that was missing was the cymbals between her knees. She played the guitar, accordion, tambourine, harmonica, and I think banjo. Yes she’s talented but her real talent didn’t get to show – I was waiting to hear her belt out some tunes or really back Steven up but instead I am not really sure if her mike was even on. I think Steven could have used her better and perhaps a good blues duet – they could have even covered his duet with Pink. I know it was not meant to be the Steven and Suzie show but he really wasted her talent and a good opportunity - the girl can sing anything. The evening was definitely enjoyable and well worth seeing Steven in an intimate space. When he sang Piece of My Heart – OMG what a song!! His vocals were stellar!! No “old man quiver” or “shaky high notes” he is rock solid in his vocals and maybe that’s what he wanted to prove by having a mediocre backing band - no one could upstage him. No one took the spot light away – it was Steven Tyler solo showing his fans that at 68 he’s still a rock star, still a flirt, still ever appealing to an aging groupie who reached out and touched him and felt like a teenager again. In the end, an entertaining evening and rare opportunity to see and hear Steven solo, an opportunity that has taken 45yrs to come along and one that his fans showed was well worth the wait, even if we don’t necessarily agree with his choice of music, we agree with the musician that he is and we will support whatever limp he goes out on next. Whether it’s Steven Tyler solo or Aerosmith – we will all don our concert t’s, scream like school girls and stand an hour at the stage door just to bask in his glory. Keep on rocking Mr. Tyler and we will keep on coming to cheer you on.
