Tampa Bay Lightning History

The Tampa Bay Lightning joined the league as an expansion team (along with the Ottawa Senators) in 1992, and earned their first berth in the Playoffs in the 1995-1996 season. The Bolts began to achieve consistent success in 2002-2003; the key ingredient was 1998 first-round draft pick Vincent Lecavalier, a center who went on to play 14 seasons for the Lightning and set almost every team scoring record.

After making the second round in the 2002-2003 Playoffs, the Bolts rocketed to the Stanley Cup Final the following season behind the league's scoring leader, Martin St. Louis, the goaltending of Nikolai Khabibulin, and the efforts of Lecavalier, Brad Richards, Fredrik Modin, Ruslan Fedotenko, Cory Stillman, and captain Dave Andreychuk. The Lightning defeated the Calgary Flames in a Stanley Cup Final that included four games decided by one goal, two of which came in overtime. Fedotenko scored both goals in the clinching 2-1 victory in Game 7.

The Lightning flirted with Playoff success the next two seasons, but struggled for three years after that. After bringing in Hall of Famer Steve Yzerman as general manager, the team returned to the Playoffs in 2010-2011, 2013-2014, and again the following season, when the Bolts — boasting the highest-scoring offense in the league — won 50 games, and the Eastern Conference title. They dispatched the Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, and New York Rangers in a hard-fought series en route to the Stanley Cup Final, where they ultimately lost to the Chicago Blackhawks in six games.

Powered by the scoring of Nikita Kucherov and Steven Stamkos, the Lightning contended again in 2015-2016, only to be turned away in the conference finals by the eventual winner of the Stanley Cup Championship, the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Lightning subsequently went on to win back-to-back titles, taking home the Stanley Cup Championship in 2020 and 2021, becoming the first-ever team to win two Stanley Cup Championships within one year. The Lightning appeared in the championship again in 2022, but lost to the Colorado Avalanche in Game 6.

Sens stole the show at Evraz!

by Ruby2009 on 2009-09-22Brandt Centre - Evraz Place - Regina

The NHL pre-season game in our fair city was greeted by a sold out crowd of 6450 people. Although not all the big guns dressed, the ones that did brought game and enthusiasm. A little slow starting, but the 3 - 1 Sens victory will be remembered, keep the games coming!

    ottawa vs tampa bay

by rtoad on 2009-09-22Brandt Centre - Evraz Place - Regina

It was my first NHL game and it was great. I watch junior hockey every year, and the speed and skill of the players was amazing. I got to see players I had only watched on TV. We had great seats - 2nd row top of the face off circle! Had hits in front of us that made our heart stop. My only regret is that this may be my only chance to watch these superstars play on our home ice! Please consider this a yearly option, come back to Regina1

    Very good game

It was good to see that Ottawa brought most of their front line players. Was good to see them in action.

    NHL in Regina

by Bringsomemore on 2009-09-22Brandt Centre - Evraz Place - Regina

This was a rare and enjoyable event. The Tampa Bay Lightning chose to not dress a number of key players but those that did play showed a spirited effort against most of the bigger names on the Senators. It was nice to see a full house as well. Hopefully we will be able to have some more NHL games in the future. As always, the traffic control getting out of the exibition grounds was brutal.

BLACK MARK on TB and NHL

by Demitor98 on 2009-09-22Brandt Centre - Evraz Place - Regina

Kudus for the Ottawa Senators for dressing their NHL team for this exhibition matchup in a non-tradional marketplace (game held in Regina, SK - a cit that doesn't and will likley never have an NHL franchise - but loves hockey!). BOO to Tampa Bay Lightning for not dressing a single player from their top 3 lines. The biggest name in the lineup was Steve Downie. Great job bringing the NHL experience to hockey loving markets without a team (heavy sarcasm)!

    Disappointed with Tampa Bay

by Zigs on 2009-09-22Brandt Centre - Evraz Place - Regina

After spending $240+ on tickets for myself and my son to go watch a NHL preseason game, I left a little disapointed. I was happy to see that Ottawa at least had almost all of their big names dressed. When it came to Tampa Bay, they basically dressed a no name team. I do not want to call them nobody's because they all need a chance to make the team. I just thought that if the NHL was trying to showcase the game and charge $120 a ticket, they would have had Tampa dress a couple of big names. I have watched Senior games that were more exciting and faster then this game was. If the NHL ever comes to Regina again, I think I will save my money. I would just like to thank Chris Neil and Steve Downie for adding a bit of excitement to the game.

Watching NHL Hockey locally is awesome

by Kado on 2009-09-22Brandt Centre - Evraz Place - Regina

I commend the Ottawa Senators for playing most of their elite players even though I realize the purpose of exhibition games. Taking my son to see the players he idolizes play live in person is an opportunity he will not forget. I also commend the sponsors for their input and financial assistance in bringing an NHL game to Regina, for most people this again will be a once in a lifetime event.

    Senators were lightning

by KatoKat on 2009-09-22Brandt Centre - Evraz Place - Regina

NHL is amazing. So different from the WHL we have in Regina. Even though Ottawa is not my team, it was great to see all those players in real life. The speed of the puck flying around the ice was incredible. We had a great time and would do it all again.

    NHLer wouldn't have missed it!!!

by NHLer on 2009-09-22Brandt Centre - Evraz Place - Regina

Very glad Regina got to host a NHL exhibition game. It's exicting to see some of the big name players play. My son took in the exitcement of the game and it appeared everyone else did too. A season game would be even better!!!

Not enough big names dressed for the game

by littleP on 2009-09-22Brandt Centre - Evraz Place - Regina

The game was entertaining as it could of been with the lack of names that were dressed for Tampa Bay. Was a real letdown for my kid.

    Better than Saskatoon

by HockeyFan76 on 2009-09-22Brandt Centre - Evraz Place - Regina

Much better game than the Flames/Islanders tilt. Ottawa brought everyone Tampa brought Kreijek and Nittymaki. Good, fast NHL hockey. As close to a real game as you'll get in preseason. Kovalev is a floater ... if he played 100% he'd be deadly.

by Judee on 2009-09-22Brandt Centre - Evraz Place - Regina

Good hockey, good opportunity, but not worth the money we paid to see an exhibition game again.

Great show, but disappointed with TB Lightning...

by lippy1 on 2009-09-22Brandt Centre - Evraz Place - Regina

It was great to see an NHL game in Regina. It was really disappointing to find out that none of Tampa Bay's superstars played or showed up for that matter. You would think that since they are showcasing an NHL game in a province where there is no NHL team that they would bring out the Stars to try to entice people to travel to neighboring cities to see more games in the future. I realize that they prob wanted to try out their rookies, but why can't they do that in their home rinks or at least give them limited ice time. Tickets were not cheap and it was a little disappointing for my son who is a huge hockey fan. It was very nice to see Ottawa bring their stars out (Kovalev, Spezza, Cheechoo, Fisher, etc).
