TCU Horned Frogs Football History

The Texas Christian University Horned Frogs have had an impressive run of success since their first season in 1896. Between 1920 and 2022, the Horned Frogs have won 18 Conference titles and two National Championships in three tries. The Horned Frogs' most sustained period of success came at the reins of former head coach Gary Patterson, who was at the helm in Fort Worth from 2000 through 2021. In his 21 seasons, Patterson accumulated 181 wins to 79 losses. He owns the school record for career wins.

Despite going undefeated in 2010 with a perfect 13-0 record, TCU was denied the chance to compete for a National Championship and instead beat the Wisconsin Badgers 21-19 in the Rose Bowl, finishing that season No. 2 in the AP Poll. Two years later, TCU moved from the Mountain West Conference to the Big 12.

In 2022, led by first-year head coach Sonny Dykes, TCU went on a historic run, going 13-2 and losing in the National Championship game to the Georgia Bulldogs. Horned Frogs quarterback Max Duggan also finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting that season. To date, TCU has had one Heisman Trophy winner: Davey O'Brien, in 1938.

TCU Horned Frogs Football at Amon G. Carter Stadium

Amon G. Carter Stadium, also known as "The Carter" and "Hell's Half Acre," has been the home of the TCU Horned Frogs in Fort Worth, Texas since 1930. The first game played by TCU in The Carter (named after a prominent Fort Worth businessman) was a win in October of 1930 against the University of Arkansas. To date, the largest home crowd for TCU was in November 2009 when the Horned Frogs bested Utah, 55-28. During the 2012 season, the Horned Frogs broke a school record, selling out every game played at The Carter. In 2019, the stadium underwent a $118 million expansion renovation, completely overhauling the East side of the stadium.
