Glenn Miller Orchestra Live In Concert
The history behind the Glenn Miller Orchestra is extensive; a story that continues to grow throughout the decades. The original arrangement, formed by Alton Glenn Miller himself, consisted of a clarinet, tenor saxophone playing the melody and three other saxophones playing harmony. Working as a sideman in the hot jazz era, Miller began building the arrangement, writing for big names and studying under music theorist Joseph Schillinger. In 1937, he formed an orchestra using an arrangement he wrote for British bandleader Ray Noble's American band while attempting to create a clarinet reed sound. This unique and beautiful sound quickly became known as the Glenn Miller sound. When Miller became frustrated with his agency, he made the decision to leave the band and seek out members for a new one. It was then that he landed a partnership with Eli Oberstein. This collaboration would lead him to a contract with Bluebird Records. From 1939-1942, the Glenn Miller Orchestra was the No. 1 band in the country. The AFM strike, along with World War II, prevented the Glenn Miller Orchestra from making any new records during the last two months of their existence. The Glenn Miller Orchestra have recorded and performed under various leaders from 1956 to today. In August 2021, saxophonist and vocalist Erik Stabnau was announced director and leads the now 16-piece band with effortless talent and pure passion.
