About

The London Suede on Tour

Legendary English band The London Suede (known simply as The Suede in the UK) are an alternative-rock, glam rock, pop-rock, shoe-gazing, dance-pop group from London. Originally formed in 1989, The London Suede drew on musical influences such as Roxy Music, The Smiths, David Bowie, and The Cure. Following the release of their ninth album, and first record in four years, 2022's Autofiction, The London Suede commenced their 2022 North American tour. With the band's lineup currently featuring original members Brett Anderson (vocals) and Mat Osman (bass), along with Simon Gilbert (drums), Richard Oakes (guitar/backing vocals), and Neil Codling (keyboards, synthesizer, guitar, piano, backing vocals), The London Suede's live performances are filled with the same gritty, darkly melodic and majestic beats for which the band has been known for more than three decades.

The London Suede first emerged onto the music scene with their debut single "The Drowners" in 1992, which earned an NME Award for Best Single. That same year the band released their second single, "Metal Mickey," followed by their debut album, Suede, in 1993. Following their debut album, The London Suede released Dog Man Star (1994), Coming Up (1996), Head Music (1999), A New Morning (2002), Bloodsports (2013), Night Thoughts (2016), The Blue Hour (2018), and Autofiction (2022).

The London Suede Live in Concert

Shifting through a number of band members in the early '90s, The London Suede's only constant members from the formation of their group are vocalist Anderson and bassist Osman. The band's first single, "The Drowners" reached No. 49 on the U.K. charts in 1992 and was quickly followed by their breakthrough song, "Metal Mickey," which reached No. 17 on the charts. The London Suede's debut album, Suede, debuted at the top of the UK Albums chart and became the fastest-selling debut album in the UK since Frankie Goes to Hollywood's debut album, Welcome to Pleasuredome, was released in 1984. Hot off their newfound fame, The London Suede continued to rock their way through the '90s, winning the prestigious Mercury Music Prize for Best Album for Suede in 1993. After a successful run in the '90s, at the end of 2003 the band announced that they would not continue to make music.

The London Suede reemerged in 2013 with their album, Bloodsports, which made several best-of lists in 2013. They continued making music, coming out with the 2016 album, Night Thoughts, which reached No. 6 on the U.K. charts, and 2018's The Blue Hour, which was placed on multiple best-of albums lists.
