  • Musical Box the black show

by BobSackamano on 2018-01-08The Danforth Music Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

    As always they delivered the goods; i myself was in a Genesis clone band ..for me, (and apparently members of Genesis), they are the real deal; if you're sitting too far or if you close your eyes, you will think you're at the show during the Selling England tour; I won't go into specifics re setlist but I will share 1 technical detail; The sound of all the instruments is very authentic; but it took the soundman a few tunes to find his sweet spot - every hall is different; in this case, the organ was lost in the mix for the first few songs; Cinema Show suffered from a hollow quality because of this; On a positive quirky note, all the keyboard sounds are so authentic that even though there are much better quality sounds these days ie piano samples for beginning of Firth of Fifth, he still uses the old Hohner Pianet toy sound for that solo opening, and all the authentic LIVE sounds (not studio); Arp Pro Solist is front and center.. it is still a delight to hear the mellotron; My favourite player is the guy playing Steve Hackett, simply because I thought Steve contributed something irreplaceable during his time with Genesis, and this guy has it down pat;

Musical Box was an amazing step back in time. That was the best music ever produced and they reproduced it to a T.

Saw them before ... will again ... the respect and conditioning they have for the music is beyond reproach

Go see if you are a Genesis fan. Just like going back in time

  • like going back in time!

an unbelievably recreation of gabriel-era genesis. a dream come true!

  • Too bad it was at the Commodore

by VancouverSouthpaw on 2016-02-20Commodore Ballroom - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Great playing, too bad the usual overly loud, tinny sound at the Commodore rendered the vocals mostly indecipherable. Not to mention the venues' ridiculous policy of forcing people to enter immediately after picking up tickets from will call and the no-necked gaggle of thugs standing around outside pretending to do security. The most over-rated venue in Canada.

  • No connection to audience

by CCMG on 2016-02-15Burton Cummings Theatre - WinnipegRating: 3 out of 5

Music was OK, but quite robotic performance. No connection to audience whatsoever, the only word they spoke to the audience was "goodnight" to signal time for their encore. Somewhat disappointing.

  • Weird concert .....still confused !

    by WaveRunner86 on 2016-02-14Burton Cummings Theatre - WinnipegRating: 2 out of 5

Went to the Musical Box @ Burton Cummings theatre with my buddy expecting it to be a good!! was so disappointed with their performance.... the lead singer Denis Gagné had a bad vocal.... pretty much read out the lyrical lines :( The guitarist Sébastien Lamothe was solid with the instrument - kept us entertaining !! Overall I din't like the concert... it lacked energy and was outdated ! cheers Waverunner

  • A magical trip to 1973

by Steviebaba on 2016-02-14Burton Cummings Theatre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

I can't describe how wonderful the show was. As a huge early Genesis fan born too late to experience any of this live I truly thank Musical Box for their work in bringing this music back to life. The professionalism and dedication to getting it just right is evident in every song. The crowd and I truly appreciated it. Long live real music performed live with love and attention to detail.

  • Stellar! Absolutely stellar!

    by Blues4Fun on 2016-02-14Burton Cummings Theatre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

I already reviewed this but when I checked it wasn't posted so here goes again. Wasn't sure what to expect as I've never been a big tribute band person. That said, I enjoyed this immensely and have already sent urgent emails to my friends in Vancouver so they won't miss this. The band is incredible, the singer sounds exactly like a young Gabriel, and the sound man did a superb job. Everything was crystal clear and the volume was perfect. Can't say enough and would definitely see this band again. I only hope they don't go too long between visits to Winnipeg.

  • Well beyond expectations!!!

Saw them last night in Winnipeg and was absolutely blown away! The musicianship and sound quality were absolutely superb. I had never seen them before and wasn't sure what to expect from a tribute band but they were absolutely superb. Really can't recommend highly enough. Just hope they will be back here soon with one of their other shows, Lamb, etc.

  • The Genesis of yesteryear

by jenottawa on 2016-01-25Algonquin Commons Theatre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

Even if you are not a fan of prog rock or early Peter Gabriel era Genesis, this show is so masterful in its musicianship and showmanship that you will definitely enjoy it. Using the original slides, props and costumes from when Genesis toured back in the day, The Musical Box brings to life tours like Foxtrot, Selling England By The Pound (both the white and black shows) and The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. I saw white SEBTP and it doesn't disappoint. Firth of Fifth is still astonishing in its key and time changes and the bass pedal rattles your ribcage making you feel alive. And finishing off the show with Supper's Ready - all 25+ minutes of it - is incredible to witness. Horizons is short but oh so very sweet. Doors generally open at 7pm, band goes on promptly at 8pm and if you are lucky and they don't bother to intermission, you are out by 10pm so work the next day is not a problem! ENJOY!!

great reproduction while poor sound quality (balance, sound level).

  • Supper Is Ready - Really

by cadiman01 on 2014-01-28Living Arts Centre - Hmmerson Hall - MississaugaRating: 5 out of 5

This show is nothing short if amazing and reminiscent of an era when bands were into displaying their music through imagery. There is a reason that this tour was considered the best of the 70's for Genesis and to witness what the band Musical Box has done is a tribute to an era some of us were fortunate to be part of. Even if someone was born later and enjoys the music of a great band, they would be captivated by this truly outstanding performance. As another person said the sound was just right and not overpowering as often concerts are. Definitely a show I would see again!

  • Selling England By the Pound

    by Moby22 on 2014-01-26Hammerson Hall - Miss.Rating: 5 out of 5

Shout out to the sound guy. The sound was crisp, powerful and at the perfect loudness. Most of the concerts I go to are ruined by deaf sound techs who think louder is better. The show was amazing featuring all my favourite parts played to perfection.

  • Shy of being great

    by La3man on 2013-11-22Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

A good show but some technical difficulties marred the first half of the show. The sound was not balanced and sometimes the vocals could not be heard. Also, the main mic was not grounded properly and a loud hum could be heard whenever the singer touched the mic stand. The second half of the show was more up to par. Still, it was a great show as playing classic Genesis is not for the amateurs to try and play.

What an awesome show. In my opinion the Musical Box is one of the best cover bands EVER.

Once again The Musical Box did not disappoint. Nice to see bands like this surviving, and giving us old folks a chance to relive what once was. If there are any Gabriel era Genesis fans out there who have not seen The Musical Box, please do not wait any longer. Hopefully the next time around they will perform something other than The Lamb.
