About

Formed in 1999, The National have established themselves as mainstays of arenas and festivals with sold-out performances and headlining slots around the world. The band has scored five top 10 albums on The Billboard 200, multiple Grammy nominations with 2017's Sleep Well Beast earning the award for Best Alternative Album, consisting of Matt Berninger (vocals) fronting two pairs of brothers: Aaron (guitar, bass, piano) and Bryce Dessner (guitar, piano), and Scott (bass, guitar) and Bryan Devendorf (drums).

The National dropped not one but two new albums in 2023. First Two Pages of Frankenstein was released in April, followed by a surprise album Laugh Track in September, both on 4AD. Across two albums worth of new material they were joined by Phoebe Bridgers, Taylor Swift, Roseanne Cash, Bon Iver and Sufjian Stevens. 2023 was their best live year yet, selling out shows in North America and Europe, including Madison Square Garden, LA's Greek Theatre and Alexandra Palace in London.

Named one of their "Best Albums of 2023", Rolling Stone called First Two Pages of Frankenstein "...a remarkable reassertion of their potency and shared commitment...Nine albums deep, the National found new energy by conjuring not just a great, suffocating fog but also the far light that guides the way out." They were also named Forbes's "Band of the Year", with the article stating, "All The National did in 2023 was release two superb albums ... have a brilliant sold-out tour, deliver the festival set of the year with their riveting performance at BottleRock and collaborated with the likes of Phoebe Bridgers, Swift and Sufjan Stevens. The National are so consistently great it becomes easy to take for granted they will be at the top of their game. But even by their lofty standards this was an incredible year." And The New Yorker's Amanda Petrusich named it as one of her favorites of the year, saying if you already like "what the National has been doing for the past two-plus decades - making brooding, fraught, atmospheric rock and roll, marked by careful, resonant production and a ribbon of debauched humor--you are likely to also savor First Two Pages of Frankenstein, a heady encapsulation of the band's entire gestalt."

    oh national

by lisaissomebodysmama on 2010-06-09Massey Hall - Toronto

from the moment we sat down, i knew it was going to be amazing. it's kind of hard to have bad seats at massey hall, and we had right center balcony, just a perfect view. i'm about nine months pregnant, so when i sat, my sister and i laughed pretty hard because i barely fit in the seat! then the show began, and the light show threw me off a little, i've never seen anyone use lights like that at massey, so pretty the way the mirror balls bounced around the whole place. just magical. the show was amazing, the boys were chatty and interactive (quite different from the last show at the kool hause) and you could feel a real sense of together all around.

    Blown away

by JTEL on 2010-06-09Massey Hall - Toronto

I paid $15 - $20 a ticket to see the National at clubs over the past 2 years. I would have paid more than the $55 I spent to see them at Massey Hall! Awesome and totally genius!

    The National was amazing

by twinaly on 2009-07-16Kool Haus - Toronto

I've been obsessed with The National for a while now, and was so excited to have been able to get tickets to this amazing show. Sure, they didn't go on til late, and sure the lead singer was obviously wasted (did he really forget some of the words to Fake Empire??!!) but they were still amazing, really rocking out with the crowd, just fantastic.

The National were awesome. They came out and preformed great. Being an avid fan of the group, I was quite happy with the setlist and their choice of songs. Can't wait until they return to Toronto.

The National in Toronto - LIFE-CHANGING

by CecC on 2009-07-13Kool Haus - Toronto

After a long tour hiatus, The National hit Toronto with full force. They performed songs from Alligator and Boxer, and even threw in some unreleased material. Despite forgetting the lyrics to Fake Empire, the lead singing Beringer brother still killed the performance and recovered with grace and wit. Full instrumental band was incredible. Sound filled the room. The crowd was alive. The entire night was electric.

Headliner was predictably good; opening act, NOT

by leatherlunch on 2009-07-13Kool Haus - Toronto

The National was good, as expected. They're not the type of band to rock out like maniacs, so the vibe stayed fairly cool, however they played many of their best songs and did a respectably long encore. Their opener act, a guy who would end up also playing in their horn section, was one of the most deplorable "musical" acts I've ever seen or heard. He was a sax player who alternated between an alto and a bass sax, droning on with rambling, shrieking, screeching, completely tuneless and desperately long "songs." Deeply and emphatically offensive to the ear is too mild a term. Simply the worst thing ever. I couldn't imagine a more torturous

    Le Nationale!

by IdleMongrel on 2009-07-13Kool Haus - Toronto

More focus on Alligator and Boxer, so it would have been nice to hear some from sad songs or ST. Addition of horn section allowed same songs sound new.

Great Show by an amazing band

    by Chance35 on 2009-07-12Kool Haus - Toronto

The National are definitely a must see live. Their intensity is incredible and all their songs translate well live. I was not a fan of their opening act and the fact they started close to 11pm... but other then that it was a great show.

I think they are the best group this decade

by mumpy on 2009-07-12Kool Haus - Toronto

I am 50 years old, a music fanatic and heard them on a radio station 102. the edge in Toronto as I live here. I was so gobsmacked, I emailed the station, asked who played, gave them the main lyrics, "29 years" and they emailed me back saying it was The National. I am now devoted, and in awe of their musical arrangements, the music itself and booked the day the Toronto show opened, went to the show, cried, and have since booked two tickets to their show in L.A. which I am going to, leaving toronto the day before. I cant begin to explain how incredible they are and as I say, I am 50. I pretty much listen to their music most of the time out of all my other groups. I would love to meet them when I travel to their L.A. show. My kids love them too, one is coming with me and one saw them here in Toronto with me. As I say I have been obsessed with music since I was a child but their talent is true, solid, musical talent, not a lot of the junk that I have heard, and I personally prefer them to coldplay who I went to see in L.A. Hope my comment is of any use and that they go from strength to strength.

The National was great, the venue awful!

by Davidicus on 2009-07-12Kool Haus - Toronto

My wife's favourite band did the best they could given the limitations of the venue. Hangar-like ceilings did not do justice to the the band's layered acoustics. Bad, bad sound, and the lead singer could not help but let out his frustration at the murky mush and the squonky feedback coming ouit of the speakers. This band needs Massey Hall to convey the fullness of their arrangements. I will not go to Kool Haus again, but I would see the National anytime.

    The National @ Kool Haus

by arcticwasteland on 2009-07-12Kool Haus - Toronto

This band graced Toronto with the 1st show of their new tour. The venue was not great, and there were a lot of new fans there that were more interested in texting than enjoying the show. Not a good venue, hopefully they'll go back to the Phoenix next time.

A National Treasure - this band is no fake empire!

by JennSpin on 2009-07-12Kool Haus - Toronto

Outstanding concert experience!! Every moment was pure musical pleasure and borderline orgasmic! The drumming is always a highlight with this band, and given the venue, the atmosphere and the wholeness of this band's overall sound, it is truly a concert event not to be missed. The passion that the band members have for the music they have created oozes out of every strum of guitar string and every lyric sung.
