About

Over the past 20 years, The New Pornographers have proven themselves one of the most excellent bands in indie rock. They have released nine studio albums, including their classic debut Mass Romantic and their latest 2023's Continue as a Guest, which marked their debut for Merge Records.

They've constantly offered new sonic surprises with every album, and have established themselves alongside modern luminaries like Yo La Tengo and Superchunk when it comes to their ability to evolve while still retaining what made them so special in the first place. Of the newest record, New York Magazine lauded, "The New Pornographers are a massive unit bursting with unique and intersecting talents...the band's ninth album serves another helping of their signature dish."

The band's new single "Ballad of the Last Payphone" is out now with a new full-length album slated for release in 2026 - more details to come.

Critical acclaim for The New Pornographers:

"Over the course of their 20-plus-year career, the New Pornographers have often specialized in catchy ambiguity. If leader Carl Newman was just a machine cranking out power-pop tunes, it would get boring. But there's also a lot of mixed emotions going on under the surface of their studiously nuanced pop-rock formalism--like if Cheap Trick was as quick-witted as Steely Dan, or the Romantics were as thoughtful as R.E.M."

- Rolling Stone

"Pure, blissfully irresistible power pop"

- NPR Music

"[The New Pornographers] make catchy, sophisticated alternate-universe hits."

- Stereogum

The venue is pretty lack lustre. The acoustics took some tweeking but a couple songs in the NP were pretty amazing. Their vocals kick ass! It's also so hard to see from pretty much anywhere. I hope they play somewhere else next time they're in town.

  • Great Show, Flat Venue

Great show by two great bands, but venue (or sound men) needs work as the sound was poor at best for both acts.

New Pornographers seemed disorganized and unprepared. Their on stage banter was not amusing and they kept talking over each other. Band member (Danny??) seemed so wasted he wasn't even "present" when on stage. Was so looking forward to the concert - but would never go and see them again live. I will continue to enjoy them from my ipod - but that is it.

  • New Po's never cease to disappoint!

The venue was crisp-sounding, the audience energetic, and the music was superb.

The Mountain Goats and New Pornographers put on a downright amazing show.

Great show! Saw them years ago after the release of their first or second album, and they still sound incredible live... Tight and fun.

  • Wow.

The Odeon was SRO, & as it turned out, for exceedingly good reasons. The New Pornographers have a unique sound derived from their wonderful harmonies, clever lyrics, & exquisite musicianship. I'm so happy Neko Case has added her voice to an already astonishing mix. She was stunning. I'm happy.

New Pornographers were, as usual, fantastic. Every song was great. The Mountain Goats were hard to understand (volume too high for their style of singing) but they were still fairly entertaining. Strangely I actually regretted putting my sweater away in the car; it was cold in Ed's and didn't warm up when the action started.

This was an amazing show as usual from everyone's favourite Canadian Pornographers. This is the first time I've seen Nico Case and Destroyer Dan with the full band and I was completely amazed and musically satisfied. Some one get me a cigarette.

  • great band, unfortunate venue

New Pornographers were great to watch, but the sound was a bit mushy due to the venue. i'd definitely see them again, but hopefully some place where i can hear more detail in the sound.

  • Revisiting the hits & some new favourites!

Been a New Pornographers fan for a long time now. They've got so many great albums and so many great songs that unfortunately they can't possibly play them all in a given set. Still, they played a great cross section of music from all their albums. I wasn't as much of a fan of the new album, but it's started to grow on me, and I "get" the new tracks more now that I've heard them live. A fun concert as usual from these guys

  • New Pornographers rock!

The Mountain Goats opened--enjoyable set. Great show--one power pop gem after another. It wasn't sold out, but fairly close. One niggling point: the PA wasn't that great (muddy midrange-y sound). I think they used the in-house PA but I could be wrong. The singing was great-- Dan Bejar was his usual eccentric self. He, Neko Case and Carl Newman sang great and had lots of energy. The supporting musicians played well but remained fairly unobtrusive. Best show I've seen in years : )

  • Great Music, event harmed by attendence

by Coldhardmitch on 2010-06-09Edmonton Event Centre - EdmontonRating: 4 out of 5

The New Pornographers were tight and the music sounded great even in the acoustically awful Edmonton Even Center. The Energy of the show was lacking, however, because of the relatively few fans.

  • The New Pornographers are awesome!

Always great! Played a good mix of new and old! I love this band and they do not disapoint! Can't wait for next time.

Amazing show and considering the venue, pretty good sound.
