About

As they approach their twentieth anniversary, CAKE’s adherence to their original guiding principles has only grown stronger. Formed during the nineties as a somewhat antagonistic answer to grunge, CAKE’s democratic processes, defiant self-reliance, and lucid yet ever-inventive music has made them a nation-state unto themselves, with no obvious peers, belonging to no school.  In addition to writing, arranging, producing, and performing their own music, they have taught themselves to engineer their recording projects in their own solar-powered studio, which actually generates more power than is needed to run it, causing the building’s electrical meter to run in reverse. CAKE’s most recent album, Showroom of Compassion, was released on their own Upbeat Records label and debuted on the US Billboard Top 200 Album Chart at #1 during 2011 -- making the album as pure an extension of the DIY aesthetic as ever attempted by an established act.

Put an awesome fantasy live! Super fun, super entertaining very tight. I love how the lead singer usually looks like a trucker at a truckstop eatery.

Great performance! Cake sounded fantastic, played 14 songs in an intimate yet awesome atmosphere in the Chelsea at the Cosmopolitan. Have seen other bands at this venue and have always come away enjoying the band, sound, crowd and staff.

  • Cake was delightful.

Show was straightforward, quality music and lots of fun. Band started 30 minutes late which was not appreciated...that's unprofessional. Trumpet player/percussionist was enjoyable to watch. Lead singer made the show... great dialogue and worked the crowd. Would rather have a seat instead of Sound Academy - too much standing and pushing.

Cake really knows how rock and even more importantly get the crowd involved! Besides the energy they brought to the Sound Academy, Cake knew when and how to slow it down and interact with the crowd as well. It was a fine balance between the two and they really knew how to pull it off.

  • CAKE at The Sound Academy in Toronto

by JerkInTheCorner on 2011-05-24Sound Academy - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

Let me start off by saying that the last time I saw CAKE, it was almost a decade ago and they walked off the stage at a festival after two songs because people were throwing water bottles. Their new album is their strongest in years and I thought I should probably see them on this tour as I wanted to see a lot of the new songs live. The Sound Academy is notorious for bad sound but you wouldn't have known it Saturday. The band carried their sound perfectly live. I was amazed at how good they sounded. everything was mixed perfectly. The set list was a great mix of old and new. Lots of hits. If you're a hardcore fan that catches them several times a tour you might be disappointed that they weren't really playing rarities or obscure b-sides but for someone like me who has all the albums but had never seen them, it was a treat. Another great aspect of the evening was that it was "An Evening With CAKE" so there was no opening band. Just CAKE then an intermission then CAKE again. It was great to see them play for over 2 hours. If I had one complaint, it would be that there were too many song breakdowns for fan participation. It's cool when a band does this once or twice during a show but they did it about 5 times...It was getting a little old...or maybe I'm just getting a little old. Anyways, I went it with the expectations of them playing at least 2 songs and they greatly surpassed that, I had a great time and will be checking them out again next time around. -Scott

didn't think it was that great. there were some diehard fans who appeared to love it, but that wasn't me. also, they didn't allow photos or videos to be taken. weird? this was announced as the show began, and i feel that doesn't reflect the modern concert experience of being able to share on social media, etc.

  • Yum - Cake!

This is my third time seeing Cake and they always put on a great show. They do a great job of getting the audience involved by singing different parts of the songs which really makes for a fun time. If your looking for some good music and fun - go see Cake! You won't be disappointed
