  • My First Ballet

    by tiff1 on 2009-12-07National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

This was my first experience going to see a ballet. I could not believe the lighting, the draping 3D backgrounds, the costumes, and how well the Nutcracker story was represented through dance. It was just absolutely beautiful! Great for people of all ages!

Really enjoyed it.... a fun family affair! Would recommend it for children 4 and older.

  • the Nutcracker was breathtaking

by DWestenbroek on 2009-12-07National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

The Nutcracker was just simply beautiful, breathtaking, MAGICAL!!!!I enjoyed the laughter of the little children in the surrounding seats, when Filbert came on to the stage! Absolutely lovely to hear small children enjoying their time at the NAC with their parents the way I enjoyed my time with my dad 13 yrs ago on my first trip to hear the orchestra!

  • First class Nutcracker

by SteveyM on 2009-12-07National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

The principles were top notch as expected, but I found the strength of this performance in the high quality of the entire corps. The skill level remained high even in large group dances, and we should be proud of this institution. Of particular note were the fine mouse costumes, creative sets, and the excellent work of Carrie Broda and Robert Pleschke in the 'Arabian dance', as well as the quality of the principle pair, Sarah Davey and Thiago Dos Santos, in several dances in the second act.

  • Nutcracker disappoints

by DaVinci on 2009-12-07National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 3 out of 5

Even though there were great dancing moments here and there in the performance--mostly duets--I was disappointed by this version of the Nutcracker since much of the time I felt bored. My 7-year-old daughter, who is interested in ballet and takes ballet lessons, stopped watching after 30 minutes and then wanted to leave. Some of the costumes were up to par, but a lot looked like layers of material sewn together. The orchestra played without much umph, which of course didn't help matters. However, I loved the backgrounds--they were actually superb, and the changes of scenery were done expertly. That did create some magic!

  • RWB Nutcracker

by hadovka on 2009-12-06National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 1 out of 5

terribly disappointing. No delight. Dull sets. Dull costumes and they changed the story. Not at all like the traditional Nutcracker. Set in Canada pre WW I. If you are a traditionalist and wait all year for your beloved Nutcracker, DO NOT ATTEND THIS PERFORMANCE. You will be devastated, as was I. Make sure to check for the version you are seeing.

It was the first time my 4 year old daughter attended a ballet performance and she loved it. I think she was inspired.

  • Nutcracker was average!

by prairiefire on 2009-12-06National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 3 out of 5

Seeing this for the very first time, I have mixed feelings. Our seats were great, but pricey. The ballet was ok, but the timing was off at times, and a few of the dancers fell down on stage! I would expect more from a professional ballet company!

  • Nutcracker was enchanting !!!

    by Dude1969 on 2009-12-06National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

This is the fourth time we've seen this show and we always enjoy it just as much every time. But this time was different because our 5 year old daughter was with us. She enjoyed it just as much as we did and we look forward to seeing it again.

My daughter, Mother and I went to see the Nutcracker on Saturday! It was a Christmas outing for the girls!! The Nutcracker was phenomenal! All the details, decor, costumes, dancing and music... pure perfection! BRAVO!

My daughters and I attended the Nutcracker ballet on Sat Dec 5th. It was the first time ever to a ballet and we throughly loved it. We were mesmerized by it from start to finish and now look forward to more ballets in the future.

  • Bravo!

This was my first Ballet and what a sight! I was amazed at the performance, the beauty of the costumes and the music! I would definitively recommend shortening or deleting some scenes as I found the second half a little long and repetitive (in the movements). Over all: Bravo!

  • Nutcracker was worth every minute

by Revifred on 2009-12-05National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

The whole evening was worth every minute and every penny. The quality of performance enhanced my enjoyment of the ballet. A seasonal favorite that I would recommend everyone to see.

  • Nutcracker was a delight as usual

by Anonymous on 2009-12-05National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

The Nutcracker this year by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet was delightful as usual. I took my 75 year old mother and 7 year old daughter and it is such a wonderful story and beautifully executed that it delights both young and old. I never miss a RWB version as it's my favourite and on their 70th anniversary tour it did not dissapoint.

  • the Nutcracker

by eighty on 2009-12-05National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

It was a beautiful production, but a little different to what I saw years ago. I suppose that I didn't expect the "Canadian" touches. The females in ballet are always amazing, but the males were just grand. I don't know how anyone can leap that high with their legs in a split position. Amazing !!!

  • great performances by the total cast.

by Anonymous on 2009-12-05National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

I really enjoyed the show but unfortunately was constantly distracted by a woman who had brought her fussy baby. Not something I expected to encounter, children yes but babies.

  • All its cracked up to be

by Anonymous on 2009-12-04National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

Every year I look forward to seeing the Nutcracker at the NAC, and the performance by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet does not disappoint. The Canadian references and unique story touches make for a playful and interesting interpretation of the classic. The NAC Orchestra's performance of the Tchaikovsky score is just magical.

  • Nutcracker had me dancing in my seat

by NuttyforNutcracker on 2009-12-04National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

The last time I had seen Nutcracker at the NAC was with my mom at age 11 or 12. Then, I was mesmerized by the fairy dancers, the costumes and the venue. This time, 40 years later, again with my mom, I was mesmerized by the same things. I loved the production's use of Canadiana and most of the costuming. Some costumes were a miss, however. The Indian dancers could have had a more richly toned ochre fabric. In the end, the performance was as I remembered it, but with more recognition of the choreography and the technique of dance.

  • Nutcracker was beautiful, but less than perfect

by LBELA on 2009-12-04National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 3 out of 5

The set, the costumes, the production itself were all wonderful! I have to say, however, that I was very surprised at dancers almost being dropped after some lifts and dancers that were often not in sync either to the music, or each other. I have always thought of the Royal Winnipeg as the elite or our elite ballet companies in Canada, and from a technical standpoint, they were disappointing. The overall production was indeed beautiful though, so I would recommend it to anyone wanting an enchanting evening.
