THE PROCLAIMERS IN CONCERT:

Celtic rock duo The Proclaimers has been charming audiences around the world with their sunny Scottish accents and jangly pop tunes for the past three decades. Stateside fans first caught wind of twin brothers Charlie and Craig Reid when their song "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" reached No. 3 in the US after appearing in the hit 1993 film Benny & Joon, and they've had a devoted following ever since thanks to their unique Scottish rock sound and rousing live shows. In concert the brothers are all smiles and upbeat energy, leading fans through sing-alongs of favorites like "Sunshine on Leith" and "I'm on My Way" while their backing band kicks out a pub-ready brew of organ, fiddle, and drums. But the highlight of every show is the anthemic and celebratory "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)", one of the most insanely fun songs ever written and a serious party starter no matter the venue.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Leith, Scotland-born Craig and Charlie Reid cut their teeth playing in punk bands in high school before forming The Proclaimers in 1983. They got a boost a few years later when a fan sent their demo to British indie rock group The Housemartins, who were so impressed that they invited the brothers on their 1986 UK tour. The exposure set the stage for The Proclaimers 1987 debut album This Is the Story, which went gold thanks to Top 3 single "Letter from America". Their 1988 sophomore album Sunshine on Leith was an even bigger success, cracking the Top 10 in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand on the strength of ubiquitous 1988 mega-hit "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)". The song initially failed to chart in America, but that wasn't the final word—it became a Top 3 hit in the US five years later when it was featured on the soundtrack of the Jonny Depp-starring feature film Benny & Joon. Since then The Proclaimers have toured extensively while maintaining a steady output, including a 2007 comedy version of "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" which was recorded for charity and ended up topping the UK Singles Chart.

    The Proclaimers didn't disappoint us

by Okotoksfan on 2009-07-17Deerfoot Inn & Casino - Calgary

The brothers put on a excellent show. They sound great live. Not much interaction with the crowd except for the autograph signing after the show.

    Proclaimers were brilliant! Venue OK....

by calgaryAmy on 2009-07-17Deerfoot Inn & Casino - Calgary

The band were great, amazing harmonies, great melodies, wry lyrics and a good mix of new songs and old favourites (500 miles, Letter from America, King of the Road, Lets Get Married etc). Only dissapointment was the venue who had provided such tight seating (please space the chairs slightly further apart so people don't have to sit on their neighbour!) that dancing was almost impossible . The brave few who had the confidence to do so did have limited space to strut their stuff just in front of the stage but the rest of us were confined to our seats, toes a tapping. Bands like the proclaimers are meant to be danced to - please give us space!

    The Proclaimers were fabulous!

by Julia on 2009-07-17Deerfoot Inn & Casino - Calgary

The Proclaimers performed with as much energy, and harmony as they did when I last saw them over 14 years ago in Vancouver. I was so excited to get the chance to see them again, and I was not disappointed! They played a variety of old and a few new songs off of their present album Notes and Rhymes, which the twins autographed after the show. What a great time!

    Proclaimers very forgettable

by lidaka on 2009-07-16Century Casino - Edmonton

The opening act almost put every one to sleep. Doors opened at 7:00 p.m. and we sat in an overcrowded table that was supposed to sit 4 but actually sat only 2 relatively comfortably. The other two people had to sit out in the aisle. Every time the lady at the next table needed to leave, our whole table had to stand up to let her out. By the time the Proclaimers finally came on it was 9:15 p.m. and after listening to 4 of their songs that none of us had ever heard, we left. So, the only song that we actually knew, we never heard them sing. It was very disappointing and a total waste of money.

Proclaimers at Century Casino was awesome!

by moppylesa on 2009-07-16Century Casino - Edmonton

I loved the intimate atmosphere of Century Casino. While the opening act was not very good, the main event, "The Prooclaimers" was well worth it! I would definately see them again and look forward to enjoying more shows at Century Casino!

shouldn't it be about the band and not the venue

by AFANinAlberta on 2009-07-16Century Casino - Edmonton

First time seeing a long time favourite. The music was a good mix of the expected tunes with a sampling of their new songs. The band and the brothers did a good job, they seemed there but the venue did not seem to work. Sight lines and sound were bad. A lot of conversation from the band was lost by mikes being turned up too loud. Half the seating had its view lines blocked by the tables in from of them. I think the best place to see the Proclaimers is not a place set up for sitting at a table watching a band but a place with few seats and lots of room to enjoy the pace and energy offered by the music and the band.

    Proclaimers Again

by heehee on 2009-07-15McPhillips Street Station Casino - Winnipeg

The Proclaimers are a great band to see live. Liked the way they sang some of their old and newer songs. Would have liked it if they sang "Oh Jean"!

    Proclaimers - amazing, as always

by GingerA on 2009-07-15McPhillips Street Station Casino - Winnipeg

Energy, passion, honesty, humour. It's what you always get at a Proclaimers gig. At the beginning of the show, people were reserved and a bit stand-offish. By the end we were all raving lunatics having a stomping singalong, worries about dignity and image thrown to the wind. These guys are pure professional. Hard-working, full-on, from-the-heart songsters, toying with us through harmonies that can entice and cajole, and then nail you to the wall. If you EVER get a chance to go to a Proclaimers gig, do it.

    Proclaimers

by KingOfTheRoad on 2009-07-14McPhillips Street Station Casino - Winnipeg

I attended the Proclaimers at McPhillips Street Station Casino on Monday, July 13, 2009. This was a Birthday Gift for my Girlfriend. We thoroughly enjoyed the show. Craig and Charlie still have what it takes to hit all the notes. An amazing feat after so many years in the business! The "Meet and Greet" after the concert was a nice personal touch. I like this opportunity when attending events at both Winnipeg Casinos.

    Proclaimers turn heads!

by buckbuck1 on 2009-07-14McPhillips Street Station Casino - Winnipeg

This is a very unique band. They come on blazing, use a lot of dynamics, and keep the energy up for the entire performance (one hour and forty minutes...not bad for a casino). At first I was thinking the music was simplistic, but the subtle nuances of their writing style showed experience with well formed songs. Their old hits were great, but their new songs had an even more polished and mature sound. Their message was primarily positive, which is a bonus these days. The singing is 95% two part harmony, but at times sounds choral. They are like the psycho Everly Brothers. Their rendition of King of the Road was great. I was only familiar with their hits, but was pleasntly surprised to find a strong writing skill that makes all their songs memorable. I am a new fan.

The Proclaimers were a crowd pleaser

by bea1 on 2009-07-14McPhillips Street Station Casino - Winnipeg

The Proclaimers were on their mark. The vocals were fabulous. I really enjoyed the clarity and the volume of their voices. Their type of music crosses over to different age groups. Definately a must see group. I would certainly go and see them again!

by travelgirl75 on 2009-07-10Mod Club Theatre - Toronto

Seems like a great fit - The Proclaimers and The Mod Club. Great setting, easy to get to and fabulous for live music. This was my first 'event' at The Mod Club and I would there anytime I could from now on.
