THE PROCLAIMERS IN CONCERT:

Celtic rock duo The Proclaimers has been charming audiences around the world with their sunny Scottish accents and jangly pop tunes for the past three decades. Stateside fans first caught wind of twin brothers Charlie and Craig Reid when their song "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" reached No. 3 in the US after appearing in the hit 1993 film Benny & Joon, and they've had a devoted following ever since thanks to their unique Scottish rock sound and rousing live shows. In concert the brothers are all smiles and upbeat energy, leading fans through sing-alongs of favorites like "Sunshine on Leith" and "I'm on My Way" while their backing band kicks out a pub-ready brew of organ, fiddle, and drums. But the highlight of every show is the anthemic and celebratory "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)", one of the most insanely fun songs ever written and a serious party starter no matter the venue.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Leith, Scotland-born Craig and Charlie Reid cut their teeth playing in punk bands in high school before forming The Proclaimers in 1983. They got a boost a few years later when a fan sent their demo to British indie rock group The Housemartins, who were so impressed that they invited the brothers on their 1986 UK tour. The exposure set the stage for The Proclaimers 1987 debut album This Is the Story, which went gold thanks to Top 3 single "Letter from America". Their 1988 sophomore album Sunshine on Leith was an even bigger success, cracking the Top 10 in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand on the strength of ubiquitous 1988 mega-hit "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)". The song initially failed to chart in America, but that wasn't the final word—it became a Top 3 hit in the US five years later when it was featured on the soundtrack of the Jonny Depp-starring feature film Benny & Joon. Since then The Proclaimers have toured extensively while maintaining a steady output, including a 2007 comedy version of "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" which was recorded for charity and ended up topping the UK Singles Chart.

    Nothing lost through the years

by wwtks on 2013-08-27Deerfoot Inn & Casino - Calgary

In these days of overproduced "product" it is refreshing to witness great musicianship and enthusiastic playing. Craig and Charlie have lost nothing of the youthful exuberance that charmed the world I. The early 80's. Great melodies, witty, sometimes pointed lyrics, tight harmonies and backing band all combined to make for a great night. As they delivered song after song they showed off their undisputed talent for crafting great songs. A proud moment as a Scotsman to listen to my countrymen showing off their skills and whipping up the sing along crowd through there catalogue Thanks guys

    The Proclaimers were fabulous.

by NJJL on 2013-08-27Deerfoot Inn & Casino - Calgary

The guys started the show on time, the main set was non-stop for over an hour and then they came back for a 15-minute encore peformance. This was the Proclaimersas we've come to love them. They gave us a terrific blend of old and new. We truly loved it.

They have incredible harmony! Wished they would have taken a break, and then come back to sing more songs...

    Charming Duo

by KaLoPo on 2013-08-24McPhillips Station Casino - Winnipeg

The opening act was a bit tentative and should get a performance coach to improve her confidence - she could be a future Carley Rae Jepson clone. The headliners have a very good band and I recognized a lot of the music from back-up sounds enhancing movies and television shows. I wasn't able to stay until the end of the show so I don't know how it ended, but the nearly sold-out diverse crowd was enthusiastic during the show and some had come wearing a wee bit of tartan.

    The Proclaimers - A One of a kind :)

by Sue8890y on 2013-08-24McPhillips Station Casino - Winnipeg

The boys still look and sound wonderful! They have not lost their edge over the years at all. The best thing about these two is their harmony, still bang on from what I remember. A very entertaining evening.

    Great time with the Proclaimers!

by lass74 on 2009-07-31McPhillips Street Station Casino - Winnipeg

This band has such a great sound and seeing them in a small venue like the casino was a great experience. It was a good concert and as an unexpected bonus there was a meet and greet with the guys afterward where you could shake their hands and buy their new cd. I would go see them again!

    The Proclaimers were awesome!!!

by MG69 on 2009-07-24Hamilton Convention Centre - Hamilton

The Proclaimers played an awesome show!!! The venue wasn't the greatest - tables and chairs set up in banquet-style; however. there was a dance floor in front of the stage, which was all right.

    More than just "500 Miles"

    by mrdave1998 on 2009-07-17Century Casino - Edmonton

The wife and I hesitated on this one, but in the end were glad we went. While the crowd really came alive any time they played anything from the 'Sunshine On Leith" album, it was a great show. The encore was a nice surprise too.

    Proclaimers

by Barney on 2009-07-17McPhillips Street Station Casino - Winnipeg

I really enjoyed their show. Love the harmony the two brothers have. The guitars Zac also looks to have a good time. Being in a smaller venue is also a real treat. The whole concert seems so much more personal. Loved having the autographed CD as a keepsake.

    Great party atmosphere!

by JJinCalgary on 2009-07-17Deerfoot Inn & Casino - Calgary

Felt like I was at a Proclaimers' party rather than a concert! Everyone was dancing and singing, the place was abuzz! Had a great time. The only negative I have is that the band was louder than Craig and Charlie's croons and even drowned them out sometimes. The electrician needs to work on this......

    THE PROCLAIMERS ARE THE BEST

by songs on 2009-07-17Deerfoot Inn & Casino - Calgary

You don't really expect CD quality sound in a concert. But that is what they delivered last night. They played songs for the past and songs from their new CD. The new songs are as powerful as the old. I can't think of a concert I enjoyed as much. Well maybe Rod Stewart or Elton John but the sound in the Saddledome is not as good. And those were not as intimate. Charlie and Craig Reid are really nice guys. After the concert they talked to everyone who waited in line, those who had or bought CDs could get them signed. Not just a quick scribble but with your name on it. They posed for photos with anyone who asked. I am eagerly waiting for their return.

    Proclaimers in Calgary

    by Spike256 on 2009-07-17Deerfoot Inn & Casino - Calgary

The boys were still amazing to listen to, with their musical, singable songs that tell stories. The band behind them was tight, especially the lead guitarist. The audience was enthusiastic. The band stayed behind to sign the new CD, talk to fans, and have pictures taken. The Deerfoot Casino now has numbered seats, which made getting seated painless, although once the music started, many of us left our seats and danced on the dance floor for the whole show. My only complaint would be that the casino's sound system was a bit muddy. I will definitely go to see them when they come back.

    Proclaimers - A Decent Show

by Amarok on 2009-07-17Deerfoot Inn & Casino - Calgary

Show was short (<90 mins) but sweet. Not a big fan of their newer stuff, but they played most of their best known oldies. Would walk 500 miles to see them again but not 500 more. Deerfoot Inn should offset the seating so that you are looking between shoulder gaps of the people in row ahead of you not the back of their heads. Lots of tall Scots in the audience!
