    Shins at Queen E

by Andrew on 2022-09-17Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

My favourite band for 20 years, was so excited to finally see them live! Was awesome that they played the whole album cover to cover, never seen that before. They seemed to play amazingly, but I thing the sound mixing was terrible. Could barely hear James Mercer over a general high pitched din that seemed to be constantly present in choruses. Maybe it was just too loud for my liking (and for the Shins' type of music) but it was even hard to pick out what song they were playing at times.. Overall a good experience, but a bit of a let down.

    Good concert bad acoustics

by …. on 2022-09-17Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

The concert itself was good the bands performed well and did a great job. But the venue could have better acoustics the sound was flat and made it hard to hear at times. Unfortunately I would have expected something better from the queen E

The Shins are great, light show +&-

by EdmontonRockerDAD on 2017-05-26Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

The Shins delivered a great performance with some really cool art on stage and use of lighting. The length of the performance was a little disappointing though for an established artist with ~ 70 minutes of performance time. Although the light show was original and very cool, being close to the stage was detrimental for me. Some of the lighting was flashed toward the crowd and was beginning to give me a headache because it was quite bright and the flashing effect was hard on the eyes. Luckily my wife had her sunglasses in her purse and I was able to wear them for the rest of the show.

    Way, way, way too loud.

by SolarEDM on 2017-05-24Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

I'm a long-time fan of The Shins and they put on a good show but the sound was insanely loud. It's been 24 hrs since the concert and my ears are still ringing. On the way out of the concert no one was talking about the music, just how agonizingly loud it was. The guy sitting beside me actually left half way through because of it. No one could enjoy the show because of the ridiculous volume. To me this shows a lack of respect to the audience. I wouldn't recommend seeing The Shins live, buy an album instead.

    awesome concert!

by kiyotok on 2013-05-26Sound Academy - Toronto

shins and ra ra riot were great!! both bands played solid sets. shins were especially good, definitely enjoyed seeing them live, james mercer is amazing live!! venue was good, crowd however could of been better. living in vancouver and seeing a show in toronto i saw a very big difference in crowd behavior, it being very subdued and quite quiet from what i'm used to. apart from that everything else was awesome!!

Maybe a good venue if you're minimum 7' Acoustics sucked. Sounded like the band was screaming. Seen a lot of concerts lately. This is the only one we've found disappointing. The Shins sound great on the radio. Think we'll stick to listening to them at home.

Great band, they sound even better live. The sound academy is a pretty nice place, the only sell tall boys and have a good selection.

James Mercer and his Shins are amazing, although James seemed a bit distant. i didn't feel a huge connection between the audience and their performance (nervous maybe?), not a lot of talking or informative tidbits about his songs or thoughts when he wrote some of his stuff. Anyway, that's just me, but The Shins are ALWAYS super amazing in my book!

Shins undermined by their sound crew

    by Nate2012 on 2012-09-28Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

This concert was awful. By all accounts, it should have been great. It was in the Orpheum - a venue built for the acoustics. But whomever the brainiac was who put the sounddesk on the stage and didn't bother to check the levels throughout the audience should be fired. At no point could you differentiate lyrics or even one instrument from another! It sounded like they were playing from the bottom of a tin can. They sounded better from the bathroom than the auditorium. We left.

    AMAZING SHINS!!!!

by joder on 2012-09-28Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

The best ever!!! I had a seat in row 11 but the crowd rushed the stage, and I ended up RIGHT where I wanted to be.. which was, of course , right in front of Mr Mercer !!!I was SO SO HAPPY and EXCITED!!!!! He recognized me from the other 10 times I've seen/met him, and the show was fantastic! They played songs from all of their albums, new and old. It was unbelievable. I danced all night long, then , after the encore, James walked right up to me and handed me HIS set list, like he ALWAYS does! He sort of 'bowed' to m when I yelled out 'THANK YOU JAMES! YOU ROCK! You're the BEST!"... omg.. I was soooooo happy!! Then we waited out back after, and he gave me a huge hug and signed my set list too!!! BEST NIGHT EVERRRRRRR!!!!!!!!

The Shins, Washed Out, and the Orpheum

by nicka on 2012-09-28Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

The show was simply amazing. The Orphuem is the most spectacular venue in Vancouver. Washed Out was a very pleasant surprise. And the Shins worked so hard, and put on an amazing show,

The Shins at The Orpheum Broke My Ears

    by Mimi01 on 2012-09-28Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

We attend concerts in Vancouver at least once per month and this is the only show we have ever left. While the band may have been good, it was impossible to tell as the sound was excrutiatingly loud. The loudest show I have ever been to. The sound was muddy and deafening. As I looked around the audience I could see others covering their ears. Such a disappointment that the sound engineers ruined what should have been a great show.

    In My Top Ten

by Sajon on 2011-09-25The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

This show was amazing! I have never seen The Shins before and was surprised at just how serious and tight they were as a band. They took us on a sonic voyage and the crowd was clearly into the trip.

    The Shins, finally!

by conner on 2011-09-24The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

I waited four years for this show! The Broken Bells concert last year appeased me somewhat but The Shins songs are my favourite. James Mercer is a true poet and has a unique sense of timing when put to music....so melodic and not predictable. His new version of The Shins were tight, talented and pretty cool if not a bit tense. James seemed to enjoy the crowd; smiled and laughed a lot! The sound was pretty well-mixed and his voice wasn't buried behind the music like the last time I saw him. Was very happy to hear Phantom Limb but wasn't expecting it so early in the set. Lots of wonderful tunes but disappointed that they didn't do "Past and Pending". Love that tune. Fun encores with a Bowie song and Pink Floyd. I left feeling very pumped and inspired but still wanting more!
