The Mod Club Theatre was simmering with everyday people, and when I first entered the club I was so engrossed with people watching that I could've gotten my money's worth via that alone. When The Whigs started their set, I was unsure about them. But by the mid-way point of their show I was thoroughly impressed. They pulled off about 5 great songs in a row, each one a seeming throw-back to '90s rock. Images of The Killjoys and Dandy Warhols danced in my head. Near the end of their set they started to lose steam, or maybe I just lost interest. But they pulled it together with the last song and left me with a smile. Definitely a band with potential. Next, the main attraction - Band of Skulls. I wasn't quite sure what to expect from a live show with this band, I'd only heard of them recently. But their CD "Baby Darling Doll Face Honey" is absolutely solid, so I figured if they were anything like their recording, they would rock. And they were, and they did. Excellent vocals from the guitarist, the female bass player was way cool (took a few songs for her vocals to warm up, but once they did, owweee, the harmonies were wonderful). This band is so tight, and it's clear to me that they have worked really hard to get where they are today. I predict we will see a lot more of Band of Skulls in the future, they are on the cusp of super rock-stardom!
