    Beyond Eden -

by Kimberly6 on 2010-02-17Max Bell Theatre (ECPA) - Calgary

John Mann's voice is absolutely incredible. He puts so much intensity into his singing and accompanying body language that he gave me chills when he sang. Tom Jackson who played the watchman was also excellent; his voice commands attention and presence. I felt the story was very confusing from the start to about mid way through the second act. I wish the director had stayed focused on Lewis' quest to preserve the totem poles and his internal struggle between his goals versus the cultural ways of the natives. All of the other "stories within the story" such as Lewis and Sal's marital issues, Lewis and Jake's father son issues, Max's own cultural identity struggles and Joe's anger were distracting causing the truth and intent of the story to be minimized and lost. Aside from the story flaws, all of the actors were incredible in their performances and singing.

No Exit - extraordinary display of existentialism!

by BrownShugah on 2010-02-01Max Bell Theatre (ECPA) - Calgary

My husband and I very much enjoyed this play. The use of camera on the actors who's images were projected on the stage wall simultaneously was quite a theatrical experience. Would definitely recommend to everyone to see.

    No Exit was a disappointment

by StageLover on 2010-01-31Max Bell Theatre (ECPA) - Calgary

No Exit begins innocently enough, and quite entertaining, then moves into a scene of lesbianism. I don't go to Theatre Calgary to watch one woman groping another. I walked out. I was also disappointed that the action was played out in a closed room and displayed by camera onto a screen. I attend the theatre expecting the actors to be on the stage. Theatre is live action, in person; actors depicting a story in front of the audience, not in front of a camera.

    Brilliantly done!

by SpiritPlay on 2010-01-30Max Bell Theatre (ECPA) - Calgary

Is it a movie? Is it a play? It's both, combined to create effects that neither approach could achieve on it's own. It grabbed our attention and didn't let go for a second. I can't wait to see what they do with "1984" next year.

No Exit is Innovative and Intense!

by DazzlinDeb on 2010-01-29Max Bell Theatre (ECPA) - Calgary

I was enthralled, mezmerized, entranced by the depth of the performances presented by three shining stars: Laara Sadiq, Lucia Ffrangione and Andy Thompson. Their performances were more than memorable. They were intense, gripping, amazing! The staging wasextrordinary ... the different angles and close-ups gave a unique pace to the play ... the audience was busy interpreting from many different perspectives ... which is ingenius because that is what Sartre is all about! The script was deliciously inciteful, profound, wicked and playful. Kudos to the director and producer for their senitivity and insight as well as for their originality. The quirky and adorable little valet injected much needed comedic relief and irony at just the right moments. What sinister fun! I would recommend this play highly. I would see it gain. And again.

    A Timely Classic - A Christmas Carol

by SueH on 2009-12-29Max Bell Theatre (ECPA) - Calgary

What a wonderful way to infuse the true spirit of Christmas into our family! I was blessed to be fortunate enough to take my family to this show, finally, on the last show in 2009. The special effects were amazing and the story was so well done. I have been wanting to see this production for 12 years and was so glad my wish finally came true!

    Christmas Carol stunning again

by MusicDoctor on 2009-12-28Max Bell Theatre (ECPA) - Calgary

Once again, the C Carol was moving. I can't imagine doing that play year after year and during the season, day after day - the performances were still fresh, the characters believable, the set amazing.I thought Scrooge was a tiny bit over the top at the end with his blanky but overall , the range of emotion Mr Hair portrays is amazing. This is one of Calgary's gems!

    Merry Christmas Scrooge !

by lineham on 2009-12-24Max Bell Theatre (ECPA) - Calgary

Last night my husband, daughter, good friend and I went to see Theatre Calgary's A Christmas Carol. It had been some years since we had attended this performance and we were not disappointed. We were all amazed at the special effects that were incorporated into the play. It was a different adaptation than we were used to but still contained the key traditional components of Dicken's timeless story of hope and redemption. We were especially impressed with the ethereal presentation of the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future. I thought that Marley's ghost could have been much more frightening than portrayed. Of all the spirits, the ghost of Christmas Present was by far the most entertaining and the actor captured the fullness of the role with great gusto and wonderful interpretation. Stephen Hair could probably play Scrooge in his sleep by now -- I do feel that he did not quite capture the 'miserliness' of Scrooge -- this is difficult to do and perhaps Alistair Sim is the only actor to have done so and it is unfair to compare. The set was marvelous - kudos to the designer. Merry Christmas to all.

    Very Proffessional

by Watchit on 2009-12-24Max Bell Theatre (ECPA) - Calgary

It was like being on Broadway. The set was exceptionally technical, unique and functional. Scrooge was amazing and the ghost of Christmas Present was cheerily delightful. It made us laugh and cry. 12 yrs running now, a must see if you are in Calgary in Dec. or through the holidays.

Something to get you in the Christmas spirit.

by girlie on 2009-12-21Max Bell Theatre (ECPA) - Calgary

The Christmas Carol was enjoyable again this year and a nice way to spend the afternoon with the family. We have seen this rendition several times now and have gotten a bit bored with it. It may be time to bring a new production to the Calgary stage.

    always a must see!

by oldmotherhubbard on 2009-12-21Max Bell Theatre (ECPA) - Calgary

The writers this year took a lot of liberties adding bits (the stolen watch and Fanny's ring) and they left out some of my favorite scenes. Still it was a good family experience and we would go again. Especially to see Tiny Tim announce that the turkey was from Scrooge and to see Bob Crachit shake in fear when coming in late the day after Christmas. Please put those scenes back for next year!!

What a wonderful rendition of one of the most beloved Christmas stories of all time! Everything about the show - from the sets to the acting - screamed of stellar production values. I appreciated the touches of humour, even if they came at the expense of making Scrooge a less utterly miserly character. The children involved deserve special recognition for their flawless performances. Finally, providing the audience with an opportunity to respond to the message they received from the play in the form of donating to the Food Bank is a genius idea, and I congratulate the production team for surpassing the $1 million mark! Well done. I will recommend this to everyone I talk to.
