On the edge and leading the way!

by Alphabet2 on 2009-11-02Max Bell Theatre (ECPA) - Calgary

7 Stories is a highly entertaining, visually stunning piece of theatre. It is thought provoking and amusing. Despite ranking high as a piece in the Theatre of the Absurd it remains accessible and whimsical. Death hangs over the piece from the potential suicide of the Man on the ledge, to domestic violence that threatens to tip over into murder, to death by boredom and finally death in old age. But the threat of death in 7 Stories ranges from the slightly exciting to the flippant to something to get on with to a piece of poetry. All neatly hedged about with the excitement of choosing the colour of a piece of fabric, life as paranoia, to life in a mask. And with a dollop of Canadiana thrown in for good measure. As the elderly lady ahead of me kept exclaiming, "Oh, my!"

    7 Stories, Quite a Number

by rookiereviewer on 2009-10-24Max Bell Theatre (ECPA) - Calgary

The play takes place on the ledge of the 7th floor of a high rise building. 5 actors play 15 characters. Each character has a story which is wittly, sometimes all too relatibly revealed in their dialogue wiith the man on the ledge. The story of the man on the ledge is slowly extracted in his interactions with the tenents he meets through their windows. There were many laugh out loud moments as well as moments that hit home, The play successfully comments on many levels: intellectual, spiritual, emotional, existential and many more for the 'deep' thinkers in the audience. I enjoyed the Story.

    7 Stories

by archerbarron on 2009-10-23Max Bell Theatre (ECPA) - Calgary

The beginning of the play was, in my opinion, over acted. I much preferred the 2nd half. The nurse and the old woman were wonderful and funny.

    7 Stories is excellent

by Onereddog on 2009-10-21Max Bell Theatre (ECPA) - Calgary

All the actors were excellent - the play was funny but serious at the same time; good messages from the more serious parts and Granny at the end was the very best.

    Charming play, unusual set!

by ckuang on 2009-10-18Max Bell Theatre (ECPA) - Calgary

My boyfriend and I got tickets to the matinee show because we thought it would be a good way to spend the afternoon. Our seats were on Balcony 1, Box L, which was a private box right by the side of the stage. The wonderful thing was that we could see the action closely as the set was raised higher than the usual stage. I would say they were the best seats in the house; we could see everything right at eye level! The play was quite comedic and told very different stories of people in seven apartments, seven stories high. The quality of acting was very good, and the characters portrayed were outrageously over-the-top, but at the same time, every individual possessed the characteristics that we see in ourselves and other everyday people. It was definitely worth every penny, and I would definitely recommend it for those who don't like sitting through long dramas. This one is short and very amusing!

Jake and The Kid was a good evening out

by TinC on 2009-09-27Max Bell Theatre (ECPA) - Calgary

Watching Jake and the Kid was a really good way to spend an evening out. The acting was very good, especially the supporting actors and all of their quick role changes. If you're from the country you'll enjoy it even more; you'll be able to relate to the stories that Jake tells.

    Make it rain already!

by kouklamou on 2009-09-27Max Bell Theatre (ECPA) - Calgary

This was either a poor adaptation or the short story did not provide enough material for a full play. The characters were presented in a dumbed-down, cliche manner that fed into every stereotype of the classic small-town rube. Lines were regularly shouted (often with bad accents) and where several actors played multiple characters the transitions were awkward and obvious. The more than middle aged actors attempting to portray young kids did so, again, by acting stupid and dumbing them down...they were not even trying to be believable as children. The production certainly went for cheap laughs and not a thoughtful more sophisticated representation of W. O Mitchell's work. On a positive note, there was some creativity with the set and the second act was not as horrible as the first. I just found myself waiting for the whole thing to be over and could not wait for the rain to come...so I could leave.

It really felt like we were the proverbial "fly on the wall" watching life unfold in the prairies in the 1940's. Great performance by Jake!

    An excellent show!

by boxseats on 2009-09-14Max Bell Theatre (ECPA) - Calgary

We highly enjoyed the show. The numerous costume changes were fun to keep tabs on in order to keep track of the various characters portrayed by only six actors. The staging and backdrops were very well done, conveying so much with seemingly so little.

    Great show!

by ilovetheatre on 2009-09-13Max Bell Theatre (ECPA) - Calgary

Theatre Calgary did an amazing job adapting Mitchell's classic series into a play. There could not have been a better choice than David Fox, for the role of Jake. The humour was suitable for all age groups but I think people from the prairies will especially appreciate this play. Well done!
