  • Spirited Mahler Performance

by Michael on 2025-05-05Thunder Bay Community Auditorium - Thunder BayRating: 4 out of 5

It was really a near miracle that the TBSO could mount a sprawling work like this so successfully with the resources available--two double basses instead of eight or ten, and so forth. Their was even an advantage in having some inner parts emerge more clearly they could than with a full complement. Alas, this also meant that controlling dynamic balance became near impossible in other parts. Very committed and largely excellent playing (and singing) made things work out. The first and third movements truly left little to be desired musically. The second movement was just that little bit too hurried to let the lyric gentleness speak out. The fourth movement was superbly conducted and played, but weighed down by some wobbly vibrato. (I cannot comment on the finale, a disjointed medley which has never made musical sense to me. It seemed to be very well done, though!) As always, it was very heartening to see a near (?) full house, with younger listeners in what I pray are enough numbers to sustain this kind of very brave and noble artistic endeavour. Thank you, TBSO & chorus & soloists!

  • Great show!

Good acting, singing, directing, choreo. Was it not possible to have a bit more in the line of wheel-on sets, especially the footbridge? Re. ticket process, which I expect was decided mainly by TBSO. I don't use a smartphone, though I do have an iPad. In the advertising and at the ticketmaster site, make it clearer that there is open wifi there, and so using the app on my iPad would work, AND also make it clearer that we can go Wednesday afternoon and buy a printed ticket. I stopped by on a Wed just to check that the wifi was indeed open (an friend/employee had told me), and the cashier immediately offered to print my ticket, which I didn't know was an option. Other older people were there, too, and I expect that the TBCA staff are used to this happening.

  • Amazing experience

I’ve never seen the TBSO before so I wasn’t 100% sure what to expect. It was honestly an amazing experience and will definitely be going again. There is so much emotion is their performance and I felt all of it. I strongly recommend to take the time to go at least once. You won’t be disappointed!

  • Thunder Bay Symphony Incredible!

by Wabakimi Man on 2024-12-02Thunder Bay Community Auditorium - Thunder BayRating: 5 out of 5

Thunder Bay has Canada's best music hall, and one of the finest symphonies in North America. Add Conductor Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser and symphonies #4 from both Beethoven and Mendelsohn in one night? Wow! What was the house not sold out?!

  • Another great night at the symphony

The pre-concert talk with Daniel was both informative and entertaining and the concert was as always first class. We are so lucky to have a world class symphony in Thunder Bay! Let’s really support it!
