TOKYO POLICE CLUB IN CONCERT:

Upbeat Canadian indie quartet Tokyo Police Club has been getting wallflowers dancing with their post-punk-inspired sound and high-spirited live performances for the past decade. The group’s concerts are a nonstop barrage of catchy melodies, and sing-along-worthy choruses, and their outsize charm and infectious energy fill the room every time they take the stage. Earworms like “Hot Tonight” and “Your English Is Good” always elicit massive cheers from the crowd, and the band responds in kind with unbridled enthusiasm as they tear through their set. Whether they’re performing songs from their 2008 debut album Elephant Shell or 2014’s Forcefield, Tokyo Police Club always rock the stage with their impressive musicianship, lively stage presence, and extensive catalog of powerful indie rock jams.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Tokyo Police Club was formed in Toronto in 2005 from the ashes of the band Suburbia. They began playing small shows in the area, and before long word-of-mouth buzz had earned them an opening slot at the Pop Montreal Festival. A stellar performance there led to a deal with Paper Bag Records, and in 2006 the band made their debut on the label with the EP A Lesson in Crime. They followed up in 2007 with the Smith EP, and in 2008 they released their full-length debut album Elephant Shell. The record was a Top 10 hit in Canada, and also charted in the US which led to an extensive North American tour. Their 2010 sophomore album Champ was also well received, earning them three Top 20 singles on the Canadian Alternative Chart and a high-profile performance on the Late Show with David Letterman. In 2014 the band released their third album Forcefield to another round of critical and commercial success, and they continue to impress with their adrenaline-filled sets on tour.

  • Police report event was "a Whale of a time"

by Bakerton on 2011-04-20The Starlite Room - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

Both bands (Said the whale and TPC) were amazing killing each set. If you ever have a chance definitely check both bands out! Could believe how amazing TPC sound in person!

  • HORRIBLE SOUND

by CasmirPulaski on 2011-04-20The Starlite Room - EdmontonRating: 3 out of 5

I am a pretty big fan of Said the Whale and Tokyo Police Club. Both those bands were fantastic and unforgettable. However, the sound guy at the Starlite that night was atrocious. Worst sound I've experienced at a smaller venue in a long time. If the bands weren't as good next time, I wouldn't go.

This show was awesome!! All the bands playing were fantastic, especially Said the Whale.

  • Great sound especially for those with patience!

The night rolled out with a lot of waiting... an hour delay to the start of the night, 15-30mins between bands, and two opening bands before the headliner. I was expecting a different feel for the night but when the music was playing, it was great. All of the bands seem to compliment each other and I liked the encore by the Tokyo Police Club that included a member of the 2nd band taking over guitar. These guys are solid live. Great music but I guess time flew by (when I was having fun) because everytime it seemed that the energy picked up, there was another break. Capital Music Hall was a great venue - the stage is close and there are many great spots to see the band well (even if you're short!) including a second story balcony.

  • Tokyo Police Club and Said the Whale... great show

Tokyo Police Club did not disappoint, playing mostly tunes from the new album but throwing in some of their older favourites.

  • Waiting, and waiting, and waiting some more

by copinej on 2011-04-10THE CAPITAL MUSIC HALL - OttawaRating: 3 out of 5

Bands were very good. Dinosaur Bones were a little uneven, but very entertaining overall. Said the Whale did not disappoint and may be the nicest band I've ever seen on stage. Very friendly with the crowd. Clearly love what they do- and it shows. TPC also didn't disappoint, playing both new songs and fans favourites. Loved that they even spoke a little in French- it was an Ottawa show after all. Biggest pet peeve however is the WAIT. I have never waited so long for any act at any show, ever. We spent as much time waiting around for bands to come on stage as they spent playing (i.e. spent a total of 2:15 hours waiting and total onstage music time totalled the EXACT same amount of time!). COMPLETELY RIDICULOUS AND UNACCEPTABLE. Who the heck do they think they are?

TPC is one of the best bands I've ever seen live. Not only do they sound great, but they seem to have the best time on stage. They interact a ton with the audience and make each show memorable. I've already seen them 3 times this year, and I hope to see them more!

  • OMG TOKYO POLICE CLUB

they were awesome!!! and the fact that hollerado opened for the was just an added bonus lol. they sounded great, and the fact that it was help in such a small venue was a good idea for sound purposes. all in all a fantastic show, and i would love to see them again!! :D

Both Hollerado and Tokyo Police Club played extremely well. TPC was tight and very entertaining. I strongly recommend seeing them!

  • Another awesome show!

by MZED on 2011-04-02The Studio at Hamilton Place - HamiltonRating: 4 out of 5

So, this is my third time seeing TPC in concert and each show has the same high level of intensity and quality. The best thing about their shows is the fact that they play songs from all three albums, knocking down the hits and pulling out the gems to give a really rounded performance. Great vocals and good sound is what sets this band ahead of others and it's what will help to continue to push them to the next level.

  • Awesome!!!!!

by Mass on 2011-01-16THE CAPITAL MUSIC HALL - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

After parking the car we started walking towards the venue. All of the sudden we see what looks like the lead singer, Monks, walking from the building to the tour bus. We kind of stop and look at each other but then kept on walking. I wanted to yell out, "Hey!" but then reconsidered. It was a neat moment. The concert was totally awesome. The opening act, Two door cinema club, was pretty awesome as well. TPC was really just playing great. They were troopers too because it was pretty hot in the hall but they kept on playing. I hope they come back soon!!!

  • two door cimena club 4.5, tokyo police 3.5...

by JoniK on 2011-01-16THE CAPITAL MUSIC HALL - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

the sound from two door cinema club was awesome. Looking forward to hearing if the energy is represented on their album. toykyo police club have amazing albums and I've been looking forward to the live show since I came late to Phoenix's show a few months ago (toykyo police club opened before them)... Who starts concerts at 6:30 anyways... here they sounded less exciting then their albums. I expected more energy, which they made a statement about being jet lagged...

  • amazing!

Great show. All the bands were unreal. Even the roadie guy on the street outside while we were lining up was great. Akells are so solid. Tokyo Police Club was unreal. Great music and great performers. Don't know the name of the first band though!

  • Hope Atlantic, Arkells and TPC: A Rope of Sand

by yewchdog on 2010-09-30The Garrick Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

Probably the best show i've been too in a good long while. The openeners, Hope Atlantic, did a great job warming up the crowd and getting the party started with there adventurous lyrics and unreal drumlines. Not to be out done the Arkells came out and rocked the house with their powerful vocals, witty banter and awesome stage presence. They portrayed themselves as really down to earth guys and i genuinely think that they'd be the best band to just hang out with and have a good time. Then came Tokyo Police Club. TPC took the raines and steered the party effortlessly into the night. Their lead singer bore a striking resemblence to the Xgames repeat gold medalist Shawn White and his unique vocal style was simply unforgetable. The band was laughing and having a good time and the feeling was contagious. I can only imagine how fun it must be to be on that tour.

  • TPC & Arkells were awesome!

    by CC005 on 2010-09-29Louis' Pub - SaskatoonRating: 5 out of 5

First time seeing Tokyo Police Club and was really impressed! They put on a very good live show. Second time seeing Arkells, and they were just as good as the first time I saw them. If not better! Both bands put so much energy into their shows and look like they are having lots of fun up there. Overall, great show! Only bad part - tickets said it started at 8, nobody went on stage til almost 10:00. That sucked a little... but still awesome!

  • AMAZING!!!!

by Anonymous on 2010-09-28The Garrick Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

Every single band was amazing, not a lot of interaction with the audience but they didnt feel cold.

  • TPC! TPC!

by JJmew on 2010-09-23Magic Stick - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

I saw TPC in the summertime perform with passion pit and there is no comparison. Hands down my favourite concert as of yet. The opener 2 person band Appletrees and Tangerines, soon to be Power, were engaging, strong, and encouraged face painting for all. The music was fun, uobeat and actually quite catchy. They started and didn't stop! The Arkells took the show to a whole new level. They played many songs from jackson square and just blew me away with sound and talent. Its great to see when the band looks like they're having fun and wants to be there. A very well put together band and I am quite happy I got to experience them. Now tokyo was fantastic. They commanded that audience and had everyone singing the lyrics to favourite songs like graves, citizens for tomorrow, and even a new song :) Dave Monks genuine personality shows when performing and he definitwly had me mezmorized the whole show :)
