TOM ODELL IN CONCERT:

Acclaimed British singer-songwriter Tom Odell isn't much concerned with musical trends. While many of his contemporaries have started dressing up their tunes with elements borrowed from dance music and hip hop, Odell has stuck to his indie pop guns, favoring simple, piano-based arrangements that let his heart-rending voice and confessional lyrics shine. In concert he performs seated at the piano, conjuring up evocative chords and melodies while his band adds gentle guitar, glacial glockenspiel, and haunting vocal oohs and ahhs to the mix. Odell wears his heart on his sleeve, and seeing him perform deeply personal songs like "Real Love" and "Magnetised" in the flesh only heightens their emotional impact. He wowed fans in 2016 with his sophomore album Wrong Crowd, and followed up with powerfully emotional sets on tour that treated ticket buyers to the full range of his awe-inspiring talents.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Chichester, England-born Tom Odell studied classical piano as a child and started writing songs at age 13. After high school he abandoned plans to attend university and instead focused on music, performing at open mic nights around the Liverpool area. He enrolled in the Brighton Institute of Modern Music shortly after and started the band Tom and the Tides, but ultimately decided to go solo. He got a break in the early '10s when British pop sensation Lilly Allen saw one of his London performances and signed him to her label, resulting in his 2012 debut EP Songs from Another Love. He followed up in 2013 with his first album Long Way Down, a No. 1 smash on the UK Albums Chart that produced a string of popular singles including the Top 10 hit "Another Love." A slew of accolades followed, including the BRITs Critics' Choice Award and a nomination for the prestigious BBC Sound of 2013 poll. Odell spent the next few years touring, and in 2016 he released his sophomore album Wrong Crowd, a No. 2 hit on the UK Albums Chart that he supported on the No Bad Days Tour.

    Breathtaking experience

    by Sam E on 2022-04-18

Tom is such an incredible artist and performer, his music caught on with everyone and the whole crowd was so interactive with all his songs. I am so thankful to have had the experience to see him perform live with Ber (who was also incredible) and I am so so so happy the crowd was as welcoming as he was to us. Tom’s music is so relatable and the way he sang it made you feel so comforted. He expressed the means of each song to us and was so kind. Truly a once in a life time experience that I wish could happen all over again. His concerts are worth the wait 🤍🤍

    Perfect night

by Marc on 2022-04-18L'Olympia - Montreal

Tom was absolutely brilliant musically and vocally. The venue was great, the crowd was ready to sing along to all of Tom’s songs that had been stripped down for this show. Tom was on stage all by himself playing his piano for almost the entire show. Unexpectedly Tom had to stop the show on 3 occasions due to young fans fainting, he mad sure to check on them then came back out to finish the song. He said that Montreal was the largest North American show he had played so far and he seemed very touched by the support the fans in Montreal have given him over the years. I see quite a few concerts and I can honestly say that this one was one of my favourites I have seen in the last few years. I would definitely recommend going to see Tom Odell in concert if you can.

This past Friday was the third time my boyfriend and I got to see him play, and just wow (as always). Getting to see him perform twice with his band and just himself this time around was unbelievable. He’s such a talented artist and I just can’t wait (hopefully) to see him again.

    Better Than Ever

by LJW on 2022-04-17The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Tom Odell is a delight live. This tour is essentially him and his piano, with an additional guitar player in part. I’ve seen him in concert 3 times, and the quality of his performance and confidence improves with age, with his onstage personality maturely mellowing from the last tour. As for the glorious Danforth Music Hall, it is my place of worship, and I have missed it mightily ❤️

Awesome Show, Great sound and opening guest

by Patrick on 2022-04-17The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Loved the show, Tom really knows how to put on a performance. He does not hold back and belts out a tune with confidence backed with incredible piano playing. Opening guest, like Tom, were confident and displayed superb vocal skills. Only negative is the venue, it is in need of some major renovations, it also needs additional washrooms. Also the two bar areas on the floor creates some distraction and noise during the show. This bar area could be located under the Mezz.

    Tom Odell was absolutely magnificient!

by Bushka on 2018-09-22The Rivoli - Toronto

Tom Odell is awesome! He gives great hugs too! Yes, I hugged Tom Odell. My concert going experience last night was so surreal that almost 24 hours later I can’t believe what happened. Guess what? I am going to tell you. For those of you that don’t know who Tom Odell is, you should. He is an extremely talented British songwriter, singer and incredible piano player. In Europe, he sells out stadiums. Not as well known in North America, he tends to play smaller venues. European fans are jealous that his North American fans get to see Tom in more intimate settings. Last night he played a really small venue in Toronto, The Rivoli. Two years ago, when I saw him play, he had his whole band with him. He rocked. When I heard that last night’s show would only be him and his piano, I was a little apprehensive. I knew that he was going to be good but could he carry a whole show by himself? Silly me, of course he could. This was the best concert experience that I ever had in my life and I have gone to so many concerts! I managed to secure a coveted spot near the front of the stage. Though this venue is very small, and any spot would afford an excellent vantage point, I wanted to be close enough to be fully immersed in the musical majesty. I was psyched. The crowd was psyched too. In anxious anticipation, members of the crowd would shout, “We want Tom!” When Tom came out there was a split second of disbelieving silence, followed by gasps then thunderous cheering. Tom had a big grin on his face. He is a thin fellow and, I find, has an endearing awkwardness about him. However, these utterly charming attributes belie a musical powerhouse. He sat on his piano bench. Instead of playing, he began to thank us all for coming out to see him. I replied, “No problem”. That got unanimous laughs from the crowd. He told us that his new album was more personal for him. He wanted to make our experience more personal too. He invited some people to experience the concert onstage with him. I was lucky enough to be one of them. I had a better view of him where I was standing in front of the stage, but I wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity of experiencing Tom Odell so personally. I climbed up on the stage in front of the audience of diverse ages, from 19-year-old to 60-year-old. I, and the others, stood in the spots that we claimed. I asked Tom, as I casually put my hand on his upper back, what he wanted us to do. He told me and the others to have a seat and enjoy the show. I sat behind him to his left. Ahh, I touched Tom Odell! I could have gone home right then and there. Then he began to play. All thoughts of leaving vanished. Sitting 3 feet away from this talented individual, I mesmerizingly watched as he effortlessly played the piano and sang his heart out at the same time. His black grand piano shone brightly. I could see the reflection of his face on the piano’s fallboard. His face glistened with sweat that rolled down to his chin. He had taken off his left shoe before starting to play to reveal his socked foot. The sock had a hole by one small toe. I thought this lapse in clothing maintenance was so endearingly down to earth. He used this foot to make a beat on an amplification device on the floor. The vibration shook me where I sat. His songs shook my soul. Between songs, perhaps to give himself a rest from his extraordinary musical exertions, he told us how each song and each album came about in a self effacing and most human way. Tom got a lot of “Awws” from the audience when telling us how having his heart broken a few times led to his biggest hits. He also took the time throughout the whole set to keep thanking everyone for coming including the people on the stage. He turned to me, at one-point, locked eyes on me and said, “Really, thank you for coming”. This man, who pours his heart and soul into producing incredible music is thanking me? “No, Tom, thank you”, I said. He grinned and turned to play another song. One and a half hours flew by too quickly. Knowing this spectacular show neared the end felt agonizing. The agony resonated throughout the crowd. One audience member shouted, “Don’t leave!” when Tom announced his last song, Another Love. As his final note reverberated through the hall, Tom stood up and shook hands with people in front few rows. While he was doing this, I managed to get myself off the floor. As I stood up, he turned towards the people on the stage. I am demonstrative by nature. Without thought I held out my arms to give him a hug. He said, “It was so nice to meet you” as he leaned in to give me a really unabashed hug. Ecstatic as I was being in an embrace with someone that I admired so much, I didn’t notice that the right side of my face was covered in his sweat. He gave a couple more people a hug and disappeared backstage. I can’t wait for his new album “Jubilee Road” to come out next month. Maybe by then I will have washed my face.

Tom Odell is incredible (6 P.M show Rivoli)

    by ConcertNickname90 on 2018-09-22The Rivoli - Toronto

If you don't know Tom Odell's music you need to. He is a top talent. Incredible voice. Seeing him live is an event to be remembered. His Mod Club show a couple years back was absolute PERFECTION. I think I may have left my body for a song or two. I would really love to see Tom play at Danforth Music Hall or MOD Club again. I was left with the feeling that the second later Rivoli show may have been better. I was beside a large speaker at the front of the stage. The venue served a couple beside me calamari/spring rolls before Jane's Party off of a plate placed on the speaker. I am allergic to seafood. Plates were never picked up. Tom invited people to join him on stage at the start of the concert and it become a little free for all for about a minute or two -I lost my place, which I showed up early to get. We are calm crowd but make no mistake the Odell fans have no shame when they want to get close Tom...Pushing to get on stage when invited. :(
