As a local resident and longtime member, I always look forward to the arrival of September and TIFF. I study the film list, make my selection and prepare my schedule. I sign in when members are given priority access. This year, from my list of nine films, I managed to snag just two, those two being shown at the Princess of Wales Theatre which is presumably the largest venue. When the general public was granted access, I sat at 10am with fingers ready on the keyboard and was able to snag another two. By constantly signing on over the next few days, I was able to snag another one. I am still trying for two more films, on Friday the 17th and Sunday the 19th, but they seem out of reach unless I can provide a promo code … however one gets their hands on those! So how do I feel about TIFF this year? Frustrated!
Amazing documentary, ballet excerpts were beautiful to watch. Karen Kain, elegant and generous. Well done Sean, Chelsea and Neve!
Well, I found the ticket buying experience frustrating online ( I’m a member) because I didn’t know when I couldn’t access something that it was “sold out “it should say that for that day anyway. Even the tickets potentially could become available on a different day in the future on that day I couldn’t buy them that’s all that mattered that day. So I missed getting movies I wanted as I thought I was doing something wrong and wasted time on the day I could buy tickets right at 10 am. I liked the movies I saw ( great selections thank y) and the email reminders. The volunteers were great. I missed two movies because I didn’t realize we had to be in line an hour before so I would’ve still been in the other movie, but it was my mistake. I know better now. I really enjoyed going on a Saturday when there’s all the activities up and down the street -it was fun then I went on a Monday it was dead so not the same experience. I would’ve bought more merch , but I don’t wear black so some year can you put some stuff in other colours or at least one other color? I know you had a gray T-shirt, but even at the beginning of tiff, there were no smalls or extra smalls left even on the second day. Do you have so many great colours in the logo- maybe one of those nice bright blue, or a bright yellow? I’d love a program but they were too exp. I guess it’ll take me a few years to figure out how to know what all the movies charge choose from. I found it overwhelming but I’m sure there’s a better system than what I looked at. I did like the emails so talking about some of the movies that was helpful.
Many great films to choose from, good venues, exciting crowds, well organized
Not sure if the air con was shut off in the building. It was extremely hot inside. 2 people fainted waiting in line. Lines need to be better organized throughout the facility. Larger signs required for direction. Volunteers were great and really tried their best to direct people. Appreciate their hard work.
Again this year movies selection was great and diverse. I had an amazing time meeting people at the festival street (which I wish was lasting longer than just one weekend ) rush lines and fan zones. Sly exhibition was fun but I would love to see other exhibitions around and about movies (posters, paintings inspired by movies, set designs and props..etc...)
This film is a must for everyone to see, not just ballet fans. It provides a look into how a production such as Swan Lake happens. It is an eye opening documentary that highlights the hard work and effort that goes into the beautiful spectacle that is presented on stage. I particularly enjoyed the focus on the dancers, especially the dancers who years ago would never have been considered to fit the mold. I had to smile at being able to watch the dancers, Karen and Robert in a studio that I am familiar with, as I am a participant of the In Studio program that is offered by the National Ballet of Canada. Congratulations!
Nickelback was amazing. Went back Saturday to see the movie it was great too
Great selection of films at this year's TIFF! Ticket purchase, viewing and lineup processes were all accessible and smooth. Volunteers were everywhere, always friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was fun, celebratory and positive. A great experience from start to finish!
Getting tickets was the easiest it’s ever been. Always in the past I found people wanting to engage with each other and learn about other films. But this year I found people did not want to engage so much. Maybe it’s me. Anyway I thought it was organized and I enjoyed the films I saw.
The movie Sing Sing at TIFF was outstanding. The audience gave multiple standing ovations & my heart is still with the rich characters The director was formidable !
Yesterday I stood in line for an hour while volunteers wandered around not having a clue what they were doing. It was sold out and we got in just 10 minutes before the film. It’s noisy there, disorganized and dirty. Go back to Manulife and other venues such as the Elgin.
Love the festival. Almost better without the celebs. Not that I dislike them - just that “Films” becomes the attraction. Isn’t that the way it’s supposed to be?!
This was my first festival experience and it was so much fun. Great film and audience.
I enjoyed the whole experience very much. Documentary The Mountain Queen was excellent. One of the best documentaries I have seen. The staff at the theatre were fantastic, organized and kind. I loved that the main character and director were invited to the screening. Unforgettable!
Never been. Never thought about going. This was my first time and it was with a purpose to see one movie about my favourite band. Everything was organized. The volunteers were so helpful and knew everything. Cameron Bailey addressed our screening. He was funny. Personable. And nothing what I thought. I felt welcome. I felt that I was included. There was lots to do. To see. To enjoy! Thank you!!
Unlike previous years of TIFF, this was probably the most underwhelming… not the events fault, more due to the strike going on in Hollywood which you can feel is effecting the excitement… But at the end of the day, TIFF is really about he movies, and if you get your tickets on time, you might be lucky enough to check out some good ones,
It ran fairly smoothly, but the value wasn’t there for the experience. Tickets were very expensive and with no panel discussions following the shows, it seemed highly overpriced and disappointing.
At least put a bit of effort into serving fresh popcorn, just like normal cinemas. Don't grab something off the shelf that has been sitting there for hours. Otherwise, the full experience was outstanding.
