Toronto Maple Leafs History

The Toronto Maple Leafs have 13 Stanley Cup Championships and seven division championships, with more than 60 former players, coaches and executives in the Hockey Hall of Fame. The Maple Leafs were one of the NHL's founding teams in 1917. They originally were known as the Arenas and then the St. Patricks before taking their current name in 1927 after Conn Smythe bought the franchise.

The team won two Stanley Cup Championships in the NHL's first five years and returned to the finals in 1932 behind the "Kid Line" of eventual Hall of Famers Charlie Conacher, Joe Primeau, and Busher Jackson. In 1942, they defeated the Detroit Red Wings in seven games to win the first of five Stanley Cup Championships under coach Hap Day. The addition the following year of center Ted Kennedy helped the Leafs maintain their dominance, and resulted in another title in 1951.

The Leafs won three Stanley Cup Championships in a row starting in 1962, and another in the 1966-1967 season, thanks to a roster brimming with players who would end up in the Hall of Fame: George Armstrong, Johnny Bower, Red Kelly, Dave Keon, Tim Horton, Allan Stanley, Bob Pulford, and Frank Mahovlich.

The team returned to the conference finals in 1992-1993 and 1993-1994, then again in 1998-1999—the latter trip powered by eventual franchise scoring leader Mats Sundin. The Maple Leafs have appeared in the Playoffs every year consecutively since 2017. The Toronto Maple Leafs have made the Playoffs a total of 74 times to date.

  • the best game i ever went to this whole season!!!

by jasonwhite on 2010-02-06ACC - MarkhamRating: 5 out of 5

First, my heart goes out to the Burke family. RIP Brendon Beat the Senators 5-0!!! JS Giguere gets his 2nd shutout, and Schenn, Kessel score a pair. As for the game; Solid Game, Solid Victory over a Solid team. Forget for a moment, the back-to-back shutouts by Jiggy, the 2-goal nights by Phil & Luke, yes even forget for a moment the HUGE KO by Colton that caused clear disORRentation in the Big Country. These 'PhanJiggy' Leafs have played 177 solid mins of Hockey in the last 180 mins, when has a 2010 Leaf team been able to say that?? Yes those three minutes of hell cost them two points but it also taught them a hard lesson; that lesson learned was obvious in their game tonight. Full marks for a well deserved win and of course, the 'Bragging Rights' to who knocked off the Mighty Sens, once again. Seriously though, an 11 game win streak is nothing to be ashamed of, the 2010 Leafs could only dream of that; BUT for one night, the Leafs grabbed a 'streak' by the throat and trounced it into a 'stake', then drove it through the heart of their arch-rival!! Never seen that much exicitment at the ACC, people were doing the wave, it was crazy. The guys really need this win for Bruke and Brendon Can't wait to go to the Sharks game on monday, Guys if we win, plan a pRade rOute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 Leafs Rock...

  • Dion Phaneuf Rocks!

by MikeTurbo on 2010-02-03Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

Although i think we gave up alot to get Dion he's going to be a real addition to the already loaded defence for the leafs. What can you say about jean sebastien in net...a shutout in his first night in net for the leafs at the ACC. Not really tested alot but still better goaltending than we've seen out of Vesa. Al we need now is some offence.....Kessel isnt going to do it for us alone.

  • great game

    by bill52 on 2010-02-03Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

Thanks to ticketmaster it was a great game to watch and had great seat behind the net to see all the action!

  • Leafs Finally Win

by JustMeLilC on 2010-02-03Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Was lucky to have scored these tickets last year and wouldnt have known it would have been the first game after the big leaf trade! Leafs win 3-0! Dion Phaneuf and Guigere were awesome and the atmosphere was finally positive :) Sat way up in the greys (2 from the roof) so I'd recommend better seating....

  • Giguere - Phaneuf -Sjstrom steal the show

by ArgoFan on 2010-02-03Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

Leafs 3 Devils 0 - great game by the new players. Kessel, Mitchel, Bozak and Hanson also played well. Great atmosphere at the ACC but Sjstrom, Phaneuf and Giguere stole the show with their play.

  • EXPENSIVE DISSAPOINTMENT

  • Kings crown Leafs

by crinchman on 2010-01-27Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

Good game overall. Leafs started strong, but let up as the game progressed. Kings are a very good young team, led by the defense of Doughty and Jack Johnson. Kopitar, Simmonds, Brown and company were relentless and skated hard all game. Jonathan Quick comes up with the good save at the right time to keep them on top. Although he did let in a bad goal, he showed why he was selected to the U.S Olympic team. Overall it was a good game to watch, well worth the effort in attending, not too many lulls in the action. I went along with my youngest son to the game and as a added treat had Maple Leaf legend George Armstrong, along with his granddaughter and son or son-in-law sit beside us on the subway ride home, totally blew both of us away. Didn't ask for an autograph or picture, just didn't feel like imposing. Can't wait to for next week, as we are going to see the Devils play the Leafs.

  • The dullest Maple Leafs game ive been to.

    by DM93 on 2010-01-27Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 1 out of 5

I guess it doesn't help that we lost, but wow, the ACC has got to be the quietest arena in the league... Quite dissapointed to be honest, and the game itself was very dull- I guess winning helps a lot!

  • by ToWh on 2010-01-27Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

The Leafs are a horrible hockey team but its always fun to attend the game. Atmosphere up in the nose bleeds is always good even if the beer and food is overpriced. If you can get your hands on tickets its worth attending

  • Kings vs. Leafs

    by Mikey620 on 2010-01-27Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

It was probably the fastest hockey game I have ever seen. There were no fights, no penalties, and it was really poor playing performance on the Leafs part. The first two periods were great and the score remained tied, but then in the third the Leafs fell a part giving up two goals. But in the final minutes the Leafs were able to score another goal, but unfortunately losing by one. All and all the game was average but nothing spectacular. They could have played better.

  • Leafs Vs KIngs Good time

by Tran on 2010-01-27Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

This was my first NHL game ever. I really loved being there, the atmosphere is full of energy, passion, and the love of hockey. Leafs lost, no surprise, but the worked hard and kept the game tied for the first 2 periods. Tickets were really over priced, but if i can afford it, i will go back for sure!

  • NO ZIP IN THEM!!!!!

by rafter on 2010-01-27Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

I think that Burke is a very good General Manager and Ron Wilson is also a very good Coach. Just do not know why the team cannot play as a team for 60 plus minutes.

  • hockey - leafs vs philly jan 2010

by fipper on 2010-01-21Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

good seats - excellent atmosphere -food was great and the people working their were really helpful and friendly with any of my questions. only problem was when they announced the winning number of the 50/50 draw they said it way to fast and to this day I think I might have won (I should have asked an usher I guess) fipper

  • Leafs - Flyers 4:0

by FallingLeaf on 2010-01-15Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

I have spent an enjoyable evening sitting among Leafs fans. The seat in sector 313 had an obstructed view, which im practice means that one cannot see bottom left corner of the ice rink. This would have been annoying but since there were several free seats nearby this was not a problem.

  • disgusting

by leafin on 2010-01-13Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 1 out of 5

a lot of of work needed to this team, like get rid of players

  • $35.00 for Standing Seats?!

    by LeafsFan2010 on 2010-01-13Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 2 out of 5

This was my first time at a Leafs game and even though the tickets themselves said stand I didn't really understand that we would be standing for the entire game. It's a lot of money to be paying for that kind of serivce. I understand they are expensive tickets in he first place but that is a little ridiculous. The Leafs ended up losing anyways and fans were booing them off the ice so perhaps more tickets will be available next time.

  • Toronto Maple Leafs lose at home

by Tiggers on 2010-01-13Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

Always fun to go to a Leaf game but very disappointed in the result. Leafs lose to the worst team in the NHL.

  • Leaf Experience Was Awesome

by Pucksy on 2010-01-13Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

The experience of the game, and leaf nation was great. The Leafs as a team played like GARBAGE! Still a really fun night.
