It was fun to see Trixie and Katya at Vancouver's QE Theatre on October 6. Some of it was really delightful, such as Trixie's song accompanying herself on guitar. There were some laugh out loud moments and some truly gruesome cringe moments (graveyard "joke") that would not have been missed if left out. Really, that one has given me nightmares for days! At the time, I thought "Gee, thanks for planting that repulsive image in my brain!"
The introduction of the character Sandy, the manager, was where the tedium began for me. She added nothing to the show and was on stage nearly as much as T&K. Her harsh put-on "Brooklyn" accent coupled with her annoying, nagging dialogue had me shaking my head throughout her appearances. When she broke into her ton-deaf song, I continued to wonder who on earth thought this was a good idea.
Part way through the show T&K began bickering, insulting each other, trying to outdo each other in nasty comments. Insult "humour" has had its day. Listening to people argue, yell and slam each other is just not funny. I got the feeling these two knew (based on their Youtube appearances, their books, etc.) they had a public following and decided to capitalize on it with a tour. One problem, though: they didn't really know what they would or even could do. A lot of the show seems like quickly thrown together high school skits. All that stuff about the kidnapping and attempted knifings, death threats... definitely NOT what we were expecting from a drag show. It was lame. It was not funny, and unfortunately involved Sandy again.
The musical numbers, the costumes, the backup dancers, the lighting were enjoyable. But overall, it was disappointing and the fact that I dropped over $200 for two tickets to this "entertainment" is sickening, and not in a good way.
