TV ON THE RADIO IN CONCERT:

Acclaimed Brooklyn indie band TV on the Radio thrilled fans in late 2014 with the release of Seeds, their first album since the 2011 death of their bassist Gerard Smith. The record was a triumph for the band on numerous fronts -- a tribute to a departed friend, a commitment to pressing on, and, in the opinion of frontman Tunde Adebimpe, their finest work to date. Critics and fans agreed, applauding the album's potent blend of synthpop and art rock and hailing tracks like "Happy Idiot" and "Careful You" as instant classics. TVOTR are a powerhouse live act known for their technical virtuosity and effortless cool, and their visceral performances on tour always treat ticket buyers to the perfect blend of arty indie rock and straight-ahead rock and roll.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

TV on the Radio was formed in Brooklyn in 2001 by singer Tunde Adebimpe and guitarist David Andrew Sitek. They self-released their debut album OK Calculator the following year, promoting it by passing it out on sidewalks and leaving it in local cafes. Coffee shop buzz gave way to international acclaim in 2004 with their studio debut Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes, an ambitious and eclectic record that charted in the UK and made them critical darlings overnight. Their rise continued in 2006 with the album Return to Cookie Mountain, a critical benchmark that featured vocal contributions from David Bowie and dominated year-end lists. They cemented their crossover success with 2008's Dear Science and 2011's Nine Types of Light, both of which peaked at No. 12 on the Billboard 200. In the wake of bassist Gerard Smith's unexpected death in 2011 the band went quiet for a few years, but they returned in 2014 with their highly anticipated fifth album Seeds.

It was such a great time at the Malkin Bowl listening to TV On The Radio in amongst Stanley Park's trees. The sound was great and the overall vibe of the scene was inspiring. Excellent moment in time...

TV on The Radio's audience Unappreciative

by vantanalli on 2009-07-12Malkin Bowl - Vancouver

Since seeing these guys twice previously at the Commodore I was a touch let down when they played Malkin Bowl in May. The audience was pretty dull and I kind of wore out my vocals trying to make up for them, it's because the crowd was overall unresponsive that they stopped playing after a 45 min set, but came out for an encore of 5 or so tracks, which made rounded out a typical performance, I would highly recommend this band as they are absolutely outstanding, entertaining and innovative just show them you love them next time around!

by chinski on 2009-07-12Malkin Bowl - Vancouver

Not bad... but not awesome. The concert was about 3 hours late and only lasted for about 45 minutes... I was expecting to get at least an hour and a half of music! But I love TV on the Radio... and I will always love them!

    TVOTR Concert

by vancouverite on 2009-07-12Malkin Bowl - Vancouver

It was a great concert, the band had fantastic energy all night. Their set list was awesome, they played the best from all their albums, including the young liars EP. The location was also fantastic, it was my first time in the malkin bowl, which was a nice intimate location in stanley park.

TV on The Radio came out on the gas pedal and never let up. The show was a continuous thrill ride. I was touched, amazed, inspired and left with an overwhelming feeling of bliss and satisfaction. 2nd time I have seen them and they blew me away once again. Thank you TV on The Radio for existing in my same time and space.

    Fun at Malkin Bowl

by ConcertGoer on 2009-07-12Malkin Bowl - Vancouver

On 25 May 2009, TVOTR played a fantastic show. They performed with high energy, although anything less would fail to ignite the brilliance of their socially and politically charged lyrics. Be sure to check them out next time they come to Vancouver.

TV on the Radio in Stanely Park

by Chuck on 2009-07-12Malkin Bowl - Vancouver

Wonderful Venue. One of my favourite bands of all time. One thing that must be noted. This concert was too loud!! I've been to many, many concerts in my time and I want to preserve the integrity of my ear drums so I can continue to enjoy them. I had found a perfect little mound to stand on near the front of the stage and had to abort and go to the back of the bowl because I could stand the pain of the peircing mids and highs anymore. It felt like my ears were going to bleed. I asked the sound tech where I could get some earplugs (he was wearing some) and there was no where to purchase them. I think that venues should place a sound tech near the front of the stage at times for quality control (one without earplugs or whose hearing hasn't been blasted by years on the job). This is the main reason that I do not go to as many concerts anymore and the number one reason why my wife wont attend concerts with me. They did not need to cater to all the people outside of the bowl getting a free show. I would like to see Tunde take more time in singing some of his songs as opposed to jumping around and shouting them. I have noticed this in live videos. Particularly with "Wolf like me"- one of my favourite songs of all time. The CDs were reasonably priced, but like Thievery Corporation, whoever created the t-shirts came up with the lamest design and I simply could not justify shelling out that much cash for a plain, uninteresting T-shirt. Must leave this review on a good note. TV on the Radio is one of the greatest bands to stand in a class of its own and I would definitely see them again- especially in Stanley Park. Too cool.

    High energy and good tunes.

by Somawouldbenice on 2009-07-12Malkin Bowl - Vancouver

If you've heard any of TVOTR's albums you will already know they have an arsenal of good music . how many times though have you seen a band where the CD was amazing but the perfomance looks tired to the point that it seems like theyve just put a cd on and stood in front of mics. How many times have you seen bands where you realize they can hardly sing and the producers have fixed everything. None of this is true of TVOTR , you will not regret buying tiks to this show,

    Park Life

by Pengueen on 2009-07-12Malkin Bowl - Vancouver

If you have been to Vancouver and never visited the Malkin Bowl, or are planning a visit to the city soon; make sure you take the time out to visit this extraordinary and conveniently located venue. Beautiful and open aired, it is found in a pocket of the wonderful Stanley Park - a fitting setting for the Brookyln based TV on the Radio to perform some tracks from their newly released effort "Dear Science", as well as those from their previous releases. The band played as expected, tightly and with gusto to a more than appreciative audience, whether this was in accordance with the mellow vibes provided by the weather or the fact that the new material was progressive and original to the ears of their die-hard fans. Incorporated were the formulaic but mesmerizing vocal nuances provided by the majority of the band members, leading upto moments of choral magnificience - this is part of the bands appeal in my opinion. The bands direction seems to be sliding towards Talking Heads era, but certainly pushing the new shoe gaze boundaries of acts such as Dragons of Zynth. It is however difficult to pin point the bands sound, as its mainly comprised of art rock flare with gospel-esque vocals...unlike anything else that seems to be produced presently. All in all a grand evening was had, assuredly even those who could not stop moving their feet to the lead singers consistent requests would tell you so!

An Awesome Night with an Awesome Band

by Jhezika on 2009-07-12Malkin Bowl - Vancouver

The weather was right, the location was great, and the band sounded amazing. TV on the Radio played most of the hits, both old and new, and gave all of their songs a new spin. The guys in the band were personable, and everyone in the audience appeared to be having a great time. Best concert of the summer so far.

TV ON THE RADIO WAS INCREDIBLE!!!!!!

by gfry on 2009-07-12Malkin Bowl - Vancouver

TV on the Radio put on an amazing show at the Malkin Bowl. To start of the night "The Dirty Projectors" opened and they were a talented bunch, quite entertaining. But the real entertainment was TV on the radio. You can't help but dance along with their lead vocalist Tunde Adebimpe. He's got sick moves, and he dances passionately throughout the entire show. His energy is contagious. I can't wait till they come back!!
