VAN HALEN IN CONCERT:

In their rise stardom, the legendary rockers of Van Halen left an indelible mark on hard rock and heavy metal by challenging conventional notions of what was musically possible. From the hot-wired licks of guitarist Eddie Van Halen to the heart-pounding double bass drumming of his brother Alex, their supercharged sound never fails to excite audiences in concert. And with legendary frontman David Lee Roth bringing his charisma back to the fold, the group has recaptured the same energy that made them a must-see spectacle in the first place. Incendiary hits like “Hot for Teacher” and “Ain’t Talking ‘Bout Love” still sit perfectly beside catchy favorites like “Jump” and “Dance the Night Away”, and ticket buyers can’t help but sing along to all the classics every time Van Halen plays on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Growing up in a musical household, brothers Eddie and Alex Van Halen pushed each other to become instrumental virtuosos by their teens. They started playing with dynamic singer David Lee Roth and bassist Marc Anthony in 1974, settling on the eponymous Van Halen moniker later that year. Their self-titled 1978 debut went on to sell over 10 million copies thanks to Eddie’s game-changing guitar playing, Roth’s flamboyant persona, and their undeniably catchy songs. The band became a veritable hard rock institution with their masterstroke album 1984, which contained the number 1 hit “Jump” and helped them crossover from metal to mainstream. Unfortunately, conflicts between Roth and the rest of the band lead to a falling out, and the frontman was replaced by Sammy Hagar. The new Van Halen lineup scored more hits, while Roth concurrently enjoyed a successful solo career. Eventually Hagar split with the group as well, and they briefly hired former Extreme frontman Gary Cherone before announcing a hiatus in 1999. The band reunited with Hagar in 2003 for a reunion tour, but tensions in the band resulted in him leaving again. Tempers between David Lee Roth and the band had cooled by that point, and he rejoined Van Halen in 2006, while Eddie’s son Wolfgang took over on bass. Their fresh lineup still inspires the same pandemonium from their early days, while their 2012 album A Different Kind of Truth (their first record with Roth since 1984) continues to excite fans around the world.

Van Halen is better than ever

by Marcus10 on 2012-03-19Air Canada Centre - Toronto

Saw VH at the ACC on March 17, 2012. It really was great. Better than the reunion concert I saw in 2007. Better set list, Wolfie was much better, Eddie was playing as good as he was back in '98 at least! And Dave was very entertaining. I thought he was very strong all night. Any true Van Halen fan knows that Dave is the only singer for this band, and no one can work a room like him. And let's not forget Kool And the Gang. They were great. A party band opening for a party rock band. Van Halen is back, and I say better than ever!

hey dude beside me, email your videos so i can see

by Kathi on 2012-03-19Air Canada Centre - Toronto

I saw about ten percent of show as guy beside me blocked by view by standing up or leaning on railing in seats on ninety degree angle. Couldn't see screen either in 322. Underwhelmed by entire experience. Perhaps people taping shows can go block each others view in a standing section?

    A Father & Son Reunion!!!

by Bytor on 2012-03-19Air Canada Centre - Toronto

Toronto's down town was decked out in all shapes & sizes of green & VanHalen ROCKED the house. It is truly amazing to watch Eddie play his guitar, & Alex was pounding the hell out of that kit. Dave can still entertain while jumping around like a true leprechaun, but I think my favourite moment was when Wolfgang & Eddie were grooven tight & Eddie leaned in & gave his son a peck on the cheek. The smile on their faces was priceless! That's one proud Daddy! Overall that was one night to remember...wish I could do it all again...

    Time is up

by Secondsource on 2012-03-19Air Canada Centre - Toronto

I have seen VH probably 6 times now. All Sammy/Dave comparisons aside, the entire gig is just getting old. As usual Eddie and Alex were spot on - incredible, actually. And Eddie's son surely held up his end of the bargain too. But Dave? Not so sure. Songs were choppy, half spoken half sung. Words were forgotten and to tell you the truth, seeing a man his age kick his leg above his head is jut not that inspiring any more. Nor are the dance moves. The recent studio albumn is solid material if you like VH, but guys? The final curtain call is near. Let's close up shop so we can all keep our great memories intact.

    Amazing show!!

by georgy on 2012-03-19Air Canada Centre - Toronto

A highlight to see this band again. Saw them in 2007 which was practically a religious experience and this was almost as good. Love their new tunes as well as their old ones. Really liked hearing the song Women in Love after so many years. They really seem to enjoy the show and were relaxed fun and sounded fabulous. Eddie just gets better and even though Roth wasn't doing the splits onstage, I'll always love him.

DLR may not be able to handle the high parts, forgot a few lyrics and tends to sing behind the beat these days, but he more than made up for it with his goofy charisma and dance moves. It was great to see Eddie looking so happy and engaged. He sounded great and was all smiles the whole show. Hopefully his alcohol problems are behind him and we'll have many more years of great playing like this. The rhythm section of Wolfgang and Alex were kicking ass too.

Van Halen is America's greatest Rock n' Roll band.

by Jyroe on 2012-01-28Rexall Place - Edmonton

There upcoming concert will be amazing if it is anything close to the 2007 tour. That was the greatest VH concert I have every seen, I missed the 1984 tour. This will be my 5 time seeing them and 2 with Diamond Dave. I admire what Sammy brought to the band from '86 to '96, but he doesn't hold a candle to the Dave and Ed show. VH rules

    Best Rock band ever

by Kickass on 2012-01-11Verizon Center - Littlerock

This band continues to get better with time. Saw them in the 80s, late 90s, again in 2007, and the last time was 2008 in Littlerock, AR The new band has a way better sound and light systems now. Cant wait to see them again. Wolfie was a huge addition to the band...Mike Anthony was just another bass player. Wolfie realy stands out and clearly has the VH gift.

Nostalgia ain't what it used to be

by Anonymous on 2012-01-09Air Canada Centre - Toronto

Saw them in Toronto on the last reunion tour, Thought the performance was uninspired and formulaic, they didn't play (react) to the audience, just played everything very straight and exactly as it was played on every stop of the tour best described as souless or antisceptic Preferred the performance with Sammy back in early 90's it had energy, feeling and a sense of spontenaity (though I'm sure it was rehearsed just as much) Gonna save my money this time around

Great to hear the pre-1985 catalogue played well

by TorontoJK on 2012-01-09Air Canada Centre - Toronto

After the debacle of the last Hagar-fronted tour (Eddie's drinking was way out of control and left him unable to play even their most basic stuff) which I had the misfortune of seeing in Hamilton, the nervous buzz surrounding the 2007 reunion with Roth was one of anticipation and trepidation: would Roth's voice strong enough to carry the tunes? Would Eddie's playing be up to it, or would his addiction drag him down again? Would the replacement of Michael Anthony with Wolfgang Van Halen mean the loss of the signature backing harmonies? Well, overall the answers were resoundingly positive. Eddie's playing was spot on, he was smiling, obviously enjoyed playing with his son on stage, and ripped through a lot of tunes they hadn't played live in forever. While Roth's voice didn't have the power of his glory days in the early-80's, he didn't try to reach to hit notes that were out of range and instead had some fun and kept the party moving along. Roth has never been a great live singer in terms of singing it as-recorded-on-album, and often in his younger days he was more intent on choosing girls for the after-party out of the crowd rather than singing, so this was actually a nice change. Addition by subtraction , so to speak. Was Michael Anthony missed? Only because you felt sorry that he missed the tour and was treated badly by his bandmates. The bass part in any VH song has never stood out, merely there to keep the beat and stay out of Eddie's way. Wolfgang looked uncomfortable at times, and doesn't have the voice that Michael does, but he wasn't a big negative. Taken as a whole, it was a great night - the crowd loved hearing a lineup of songs that hit every one of the original six Roth-era studio albums and had an energy that had been sorely mising from the 2004 tour when the on-stage tension infected the show in a very negative way. Hearing a tight band with good vocals beats hearing strong vocals and a messed up band who seemed to be playing different time signatures throughout the night! The only things on the 2004 tour you could say were better were Hagar's vocal power and of course seing Michael Anthony's smiling face. But, on balance, 2007 was far and away the better show. A great time had by all.

    not worth $180

by digitalman on 2011-03-18Rexall Place - Edmonton

I amoung many Van Halen fans have now had the oppertunity to see them With Both David Lee Roth in 2007 and Sammy Hagar in 2004. I spent less money on the Sammy Hagar show and got better seats and I tell you it was 100 times better. Fortunately I attended a show where Eddie decided to take a break from drinking so he played very well. Dave just doesn't sing the songs the way they are supposed to be sung and I kept thinking the entire time "What the Hell are you doing!!" Not to mention the void that was left in spirit by Mike Anthony's Absence but poor physical compensation of Eddie's son Wolfgang. He's not even old enough to drink yet and he's rockin out to songs about Partying and women...get real!!! I was almost embarresed for the audience when Dave brought out the giant microphone and rode it like a bull at the rodeo. I won't be seeing VH again unless they tour with Hagar again and lets face it...that isn't going to happen.
