About

With a catalog of songs that reaches back 50 years, Van Morrison always delivers a concert that’s impossible to predict  for his many ticket buyers. The iconic Northern Ireland native has, of course, recorded classic albums like Moondance and Astral Weeks, and timeless singles like "Brown Eyed Girl," "Domino," and "Wild Night." But he's released well over 30 albums during the course of his career, building a repertoire that veers from Celtic music to folk to blues to covers of standards. His focus on any given night could switch on the dime as he follows his muse wherever it takes him. Fans fill seats to see Van Morrison on tour because the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is a master of making his own whatever genre or song he tackles. His unmistakable voice is a reedy and expressive growl, and his delivery --  which is constantly evolving -- conjures elements of jazz, blues and gospel. His latest album, 2012's Born to Sing: No Plan B, marked his first batch of original songs in five years and was hailed by many critics as recalling his much-heralded recordings of the late '60s and early '70s. It peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 chart.

    Below expectations

by Dismayed on 2009-10-01Massey Hall - Toronto

My Fiance is a HUGE Van Morrison fan and we were both very much looking forward to our 3rd row seating in this fantastic venue. Unfortunately we were both sadly disappointed. Don't get me wrong, the band members are amazingly talented and we enjoyed the music very much. However three things made this a terrible disappointment. First, even though we knew the words, could not understand a single word that was sung. Second, the show was barely over an hour and a half (8pm - 9:30pm)...way too short for the price we paid. Third, and probably the worst feature, was tht Van Morrison said NOT ONE WORD to the audience..no "Hello, glad to be here", no "thanks for coming out", not one word to engage the audience. We will remain fans of Van Morrison's music, however paying for another "live" show is out of the question.

Massey Hall delivers the venue for V.M.

by Bazzer on 2009-10-01Massey Hall - Toronto

I recently saw The Tragically Hip at Massey Hall and it was a very poor representation of a great band - muddy, dense sound quality- Last night van Morrison sat down at the piano to open the show and his voice filled the building. What a difference. It was an economical performance ( 90 minutes) but a very satisfying night.

    Van Morrison Back On Top

    by RPD1 on 2009-10-01Massey Hall - Toronto

Van Morrison amazed long time fans with an impeccable set of Astral Weeks (1968) and some eclectic selections from his mid career. An all-star band backed up the legendary writer/performer of such classics as Gloria and Brown Eyed Girl, but he didn't just do standard fare, which is what made this concert so special for the truly devoted. Astral Weeks is in itself an undervalued album from his oeuvre and other songs like In The Garden and The Mystery were a rare pleasure to experience live. Gone is the crusty attitude— and while he still avoids any audience appreciation (no hello, it's great to be here!), that's OK, he's a consummate professional who knows his craft and delivers what's important, beautiful songs combining blues, jazz and rock with raw emotion and exquisite orchestration. While it's perhaps an overused expression, he's one of a kind—there are no pretenders, no one has his particular musical vision. He's a survivor who has an incredible and lengthy song list spanning 40 years. Unaffected by time, his voice penetrated for over an hour and a half—one can forgive the lack of an encore. He's smart guy to leave you wanting more.

    Absolute Perfection!!

by JohnDwasthere on 2009-10-01Massey Hall - Toronto

As I looked around into aged faces of the crowd just before last night's performance it seemed like time was standing still or better time has not stood still. They were mostly grey and didn't seem energized. A complete 360 when I looked again once the lights dimmed and the performance began. The sound of perfection filled their void and you could see new life once again in those faces. WOW... what a transformation as if they came for thier own salvation and were not disappointed. Approximately 100 minutes left everyone wanting more and more yet not 1 more second could make it as perfect as the sound of this his best by far. Van the man is a person like all of us who has good and bad in their life and performances... last night all was put behind and he delivered what was his not only his good rather his best!

Van Morrison great as only VM can be

by Connorsmammo on 2009-10-01Massey Hall - Toronto

Van Morrison stepped on stage at 8:00 pm and launched into some well-loved and familiar pieces. He acquiesced to his audience and sang Brown-eyed girl and then he presented Astral Weeks - superbly. He seemed pre-occupied with directing the band - something I haven't noticed in any of his other concerts - but maybe I wasn't paying attention. The concert only lasted an hour and a half -b ut he did not scrimp on the music. He is very generous with his musicians ensuring that they are highlighted continuously throughout the performance. A great concert. Van Morrison is like a religion. His complicated music and his beautiful lyrics really do make him "The Man"

Van Morrison Astral Weeks in Toronto

by cfmbn on 2009-10-01Massey Hall - Toronto

Well , being a long time fan of Van, I have always really enjoyed his music. On the other hand his shows always left to be desired. Van never interacts with the crowd, he comes on stage does a great job and leaves when done. Simple . HIs last show in Toronto at the Molson Amphitheater was disappointing but I do admit this show at Massey Hall , Van the Man came out in spades. Classic music, great orchestration,

Van Morrison - I am on Cloud NIne!!

by jeannius on 2009-10-01Massey Hall - Toronto

We saw VM last year at Massey Hall...and we loved it... This time, VM was centre stage and the lighting was great...we had better seats...although any seat in Massey Hall is pretty good. The orchestration was amazing. VERY talented band. I will be on Cloud nine for a few days. I loved this concert!

    Van Morrison Horrible!

    by extreme123 on 2009-10-01Massey Hall - Toronto

Worst concert ever. Did he forget how to play instruments. He certainly doesn't know how to sing anymore. You could not understand any of the words he was singing. If it wasn't for the large back up band it would have been a total disaster. At the very expensive price for the seats he was also very unappreciative of the audience. No Hello, no smile no encore and no thank you to the people who paid to come and see him. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY. DON'T GO!

Van Morrison Big Average at Best

by Timm on 2009-10-01Massey Hall - Toronto

The concert was advertised as Astral Weeks and Classic Songs live. Classic songs here was Brown Eyed Girl and one other. The rest was Astral Weeks. The band went through the set list like they had a bus to catch, with barely a breath in between. The concert started at 8:05pm and ended at 9:40pm. No encore. Additionally, Van Morrison did not even acknowledge the audience, introduced the band as "the band" with a sweep of his arm at the very end and then walked off stage. All in all, not workth the money

    Dissapointing Effort by Van Morrison

by FredD on 2009-10-01Massey Hall - Toronto

My new girlfriend and I had been eagerly anticipating a great show ever since the very expensive seats went on sale last August. The show billing promised the complete Astral Weeks LP and a variety of Van's numerous hits from over the years. Apparantly the hits were first but we couldn't tell because the sound system was so poor that the vocals were muddy, even if Van had made an effort to enounciate the words. Then Astral Weeks kicked in but there was little similarity to the LP since Van decided to update the arrangements for his expanded band. Then after the traditional crowd raising Gloria, Van left the stage and the roadies came out to dismantle the equipment. We were left wondering what happened to the promised show in the short 100 minute set. One patron asked a surprised usher if the end was actually an intermission. Another said he wanted a refund. Very dissapointing and not at all like the excellent show from last year.

    Van Morrison Sucked!

by Bushcreeker on 2009-10-01The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel Las Vegas - Las Vegas

Caught Van Morrison at the "Joint" at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas Sept.24/09. While the sound was ok he was worse than Dylan when it came to trying to understand ANYTHING he said. He never said boo to the audience let alone thanks for coming or kiss my ass, and seemed to only want to get the night over with. Only played for 90 minutes including the encore. . . for $150.00 ! ! ! Old faves were barely recognizable. Pack it in Van. Your day it over.

    Van the Man-Astral Weeks BRILLIANT

by dublintoo on 2009-09-30The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

Concert of a lifetime..Van played 8 songs before launching into Astral Weeks. While the entire set was awesome with a band that was just smokin hot, its fair to say some numbers absolutely stood out above the others. For example, in first half of the show In the Garden, Northern Muse, Little Village. Then onto Astral Weeks -- opening was wonderful; slim slow & ballerina were sublime. The band was really cooking.. Tony Fitz on fiddle stole the show at times - though Bassist and Jay Berliner also incredible. For me, this was the show of a lifetime and I hope Van puts on more Astral Week concerns as I definitely want to go again..

    Glad I went

by wallymac on 2009-09-29The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel Las Vegas - Las Vegas

he can still belt it out. however, considering the fact that they were selling shirts highlighting the song "brown eyed girl". he should have sang it!! plus, no real salute to the crowd and he ran off the stage at the end without even considering an encore.

    Van Morrison

by buster56 on 2009-09-26The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel Las Vegas - Las Vegas

Worst show I have seen. I used to be a big fan of his. Not anymore. He stunk. Very unprofessional. Did not once acknowlegde the audience. Mumbled most of the words to the songs. I think he forgot the words. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS PERSON
