Vancouver Canucks History

The Vancouver Canucks started play in 1970, entering the league along with the Buffalo Sabres. Vancouver has been to the Stanley Cup Final on three occasions, though they lost to the New York Islanders in 1982, the New York Rangers in 1994 and the Boston Bruins in 2011.

Despite humble beginnings, the Canucks continued to develop. With the arrival of three key players—Captain Trevor Linden, netminder Kirk McLean, and "the Russian Rocket" Pavel Bure, the Canucks had a winning Playoff run season—making it to the 1994 finals.

The Canucks continued to acquire superstars like Alexander Mogilny and Markus Näslund, and while the following years meant a series of losses, it allowed for the team to draft Henrik and Daniel Sedin, who would go on to lead the Canucks to Presidents' Trophies in back-to-back seasons in 2010-11 and 2011-12, as well as their finals appearance in 2011.

I thought that the Cabucks open practice was an awesome experience and everyone there looked like they were enjoying themselves. I think that it was nice of the canucks players to sign the sticks after the practice and it shows that the canucks do care. The open practice should be held a bit more often because I know that all the canucks fans had a blast!!

  • CANUCKS OPEN PRACTICE WAS GREAT FOR FAMILIES

GREAT FOR MOM/DADS TO BRING THERE KIDS TO WATCH THE CANUCKS. WISH THE MERCHANDISE COULD HAVE BEEN AT FAMILY RATE.

Open practice was great and very enjoyable. Daniel was missing unfortunately due to a foot issue. I thought it was cool. The one thing I would have like is if they wore there numbers on there jersey's or names. It is hard to see the numbers on their head gear. I saw a lot of families enjoying the open practice and the best part if watching the autographs by the players at the end. Players should skate around and see the fans a bit more. They seem to be so scared to actually engage the fans with the exception of one newbie who threw pucks to the little fans after the game. Good on you!!! I was impressed.

  • I love the Canucks

    by Crissy4382 on 2009-10-11General Motors Place - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

I love that they have held this event. It was a great way to get the family out and together, especially when ticket prices are so high to watch a game, it allowed the fans to experience the atmosphere and watch them live even if it wasn't a game.

It was very good especially for the children who love the Canucks and when the parents are unable to afford the games. What would be really good is if there was a way where the players could be recognized by having their names and numbers on their jerseys.

  • Good for free event

    by canuckfan1000 on 2009-10-11General Motors Place - VancouverRating: 3 out of 5

We sat high up in the balcony area. There were lots of empty seats in the lower bowl, but we were not allowed to sit in the lower bowl, which seemed kind of silly, with all the empty seats. It was OK for a free event, kids seemed to have fun anyway.

  • Canucks Cold

    by Coach88 on 2009-10-11General Motors Place - VancouverRating: 1 out of 5

We took our 6 & 8 year old kids to the open practice. Maybe we had our hopes to high but it was a let down. The Canuck players were cold. Kids were lined up by the glass, waving, trying to take pictures and the players would not even recognize they were there. They stood with their backs to the glass, not smile or wave. The shoot out at the end was entertaining but tha tlast 5 minutes was not worth the drive.

  • Really enjoyable

Well organized and the staff were friendly and helpful. My family enjoyed getting autographs and I liked seeing the players in a relaxed environment. The event was scheduled on a long weekend which is nice.

  • Was pretty good

i've never been before and we went with a group of adults and kids. It was great fun to watch them practice, but also all the fun things they had going on there for the kids was pretty neat too. My only suggestion would be more to someone allow for more people to be able to mingle with the players, autographs, pictures, etc. My young nephew cried pretty hard when he wasn't picked to have his stick signed. :-(

Good dislay of skills in front of a family orientated crowd. The audience seemed to all enjoy watching the practice.

  • best for adults

Took all 4 of my children to the event - aged 7,9,11 and 12. They were pretty much bored the whole time. The event was great for me but the kids were let down by not getting a free puck, T-shirt or stick like some other lucky fans.

  • An affordable way for Kids to see the Canucks

    by Mom2Boys on 2009-10-11General Motors Place - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

This is our second time taking are two boys to this event. Most people can't afford to pay full price for a family to attend a Canucks game, so this event is the perfect way to get the whole family out to GM place to see the team on ice. Althought the ticket says Canucks start at 11AM, if you don't arrive at least an hour before that you will miss the chance to enter draws, play some games, take a photo with Orca and get in the very long face painting line up! You really need to get there early to walk around and take in some of the pre-practice activities. It is sometime in that hour that tickets are handed out randomly (I guess it's random, I've never seen an entry form for it!) to people who will later be invited down onto the ice to receive a signed hockey stick and photo opp.

the event went well. everything went smooth, from entering and leaving the building. i even got autographs from mitchell and erhoff, as well as fin lol. next year, i just hope they have a time slot where you could get a chance to get more autographs. that was the only negative part. other than that, i enjoyed the event and would most likely go again.

  • Canucks Open

by Casofilia on 2009-10-11General Motors Place - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

I wish that the Alumni game had been advertised. It was good to see just how the Canucks 'get it all together' but would have been better if the playes had identification. The cost of attending a game for an overseas senior on holiday is high so this was a chance to visit the 'Garage' An enjoyable morning. Mike

  • Open Practice - A Yearly Fun Event for Kids

by CanuckForever on 2009-10-11General Motors Place - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

It's a great opportunity for Canuck fans who may not be able to afford going to the games see their favourite Canucks team do their thing. The atmoshphere is always great at these events. Loyal fans for sure. Definitely a great event for little kids and young families. Good for older Canucks fans to see the new players and the shootout at the end is always fun to watch. It's too bad so many people get tickets and not go. It's also too bad some of the loyal fans who go to the Open Practices don't get to go to the real games, because if they did, they would blow the roof off of GM Place. Oh well, it's the people with the money who keep the Canucks here. It's all fine and dandy when the Canucks are winning, but when they're going through some bad times, it's the loyal fans who are always there for the team. Nuff said......

  • Canuck's Open Practice - Fantastically FUN!

by scrapbooksue on 2009-10-11General Motors Place - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

We attended the Canuck's Open Practice yesterday, and I have to say - it was one of the most organized events that we have been to at GM Place! It was great to be able to see the players "close up" and watch what they do to prepare for an NHL level hockey game. Our kids loved to see their favorite players on the ice and it was great to have the players interact with them a little bit - even if it was just a head nod in their direction along with a smile of acknowledgment for coming out to see them. Being able to get close to the ice to snap a few pictures was great as well, and will add some wonderful memories to our family scrapbook! One note though - it would have been beneficial to have the players jersey numbers or name bars shown on their practice jerseys (they were blank) for those fans that were further back in the stands...as the only identification on the players were helmet stickers and they are pretty small to see from 50 feet away! Overall, we had a wonderful time and it was Fantastically FUN!! Thank you to the Vancouver Canucks, and their sponsors for a totally entertaining day!!

  • Canucks bomb Canadiens! 7-0

by Lockjaw on 2009-10-08General Motors Place - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Seeing the Canucks score 7 goals against the Habs, absolutely priceless!!! There was drama in the air as the Canucks needed their first win after losing first 3 games of the season. There were lots of Hab fans in attendace chanting "go Habs go" before the first Canucks' goal, , but the Canucks shut'em up, giving them an embarassing, humiliating loss. Poor Habs fans will be hiding their jerseys. An explosive win, ya had to be there!
