Vancouver Canucks History

The Vancouver Canucks started play in 1970, entering the league along with the Buffalo Sabres. Vancouver has been to the Stanley Cup Final on three occasions, though they lost to the New York Islanders in 1982, the New York Rangers in 1994 and the Boston Bruins in 2011.

Despite humble beginnings, the Canucks continued to develop. With the arrival of three key players — Captain Trevor Linden, netminder Kirk McLean, and "the Russian Rocket" Pavel Bure, the Canucks had a winning Playoff run season — making it to the 1994 finals.

The Canucks continued to acquire superstars like Alexander Mogilny and Markus Näslund, and while the following years meant a series of losses, it allowed for the team to draft Henrik and Daniel Sedin, who would go on to lead the Canucks to Presidents' Trophies in back-to-back seasons in 2010-11 and 2011-12, as well as their finals appearance in 2011.

Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena

The Vancouver Canucks play their home games at the 475,000-square foot Rogers Arena, which also played host to the 2010 Winter Olympic Games where Sidney Crosby scored the “Golden Goal.” A staple of downtown Vancouver, the Canucks played their first game at the arena on October 9, 1995. Other notable events that have taken place at the arena include the 1998 NHL All-Star Game, 2019 NHL Entry Draft, and in October 2002 when Queen Elizabeth II dropped the ceremonial first puck during an NHL exhibition game between the Canucks and San Jose Sharks. Additionally, the arena played host to Games 1, 2, 5, and 7 of the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals.

  • Most Exciting Preseason Game Ever!!!

by ChibaWalker on 2009-09-22General Motors Place - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

The Canucks take 3-0 lead early in the 2nd period. Flames come storming back... erase Canucks 3 goal lead and take 4-3 lead.. Daniel scores with 0.2 seconds remaining in regulation time to send the game into OT. The Canucks fail to capitalize on 4-3 powerplay in circus time. Cody Hodgson scores first shootout goal. Spectacular goal! Grabner and Wellwood fail to score. Shootout tied 1-1 after 3 shooters. Canucks fourth shooter Daniel scores the game winner. Unforgettable!!!

  • Canucks were great

Great game Great action in the first period, Canucks slowed down until the third and ended on a great high at the end of the game

  • Canucks vs Oilers Home Opener

by lildeere on 2009-09-21General Motors Place - VancouverRating: 2 out of 5

Pre-season hockey is boring. Everyone knows and expects it, but it would be good to see some of those young guns show some enthusiam and energy, to prove that they want to play in the NHL. I do not think I will ever buy preseason tickets again. Canucks should sell the pre-season games at a discounted price to bring in the fans who do not get to see the Canucks during regular season due to the high costs and lack of tickets available. I know that regular season games will offer more excitement and looking forward to attending a few of those. GO CANUCKS GO !!

  • What a blast!

by Islandhockeymom on 2009-09-21General Motors Place - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

I always take my sons to @ least one NHL game per season, and as usual, it was Worth the trip over from the Island! Kids had a blast and we loved getting over from Nanaimo to Vancouver.. and this time even the weather was great! The kids watch all the games they can on TV and for them, being there in person, cheering on their teams, (Canucks And Oilers) goes on the Hilarious list! (I think they can out-commentate anyone!)

  • Exhibition game like a buffet

by Buminaseat on 2009-09-20General Motors Place - VancouverRating: 3 out of 5

Overall a nice mixture of a few old favorites and examples of future contributors of interest on display. As expected for an exhibition game, some offerings I could do without. I'd pass on the passes that miss the mark or seem to long to get there but that is to be expected when some players aren't in mid season form or playing with linemates they're used to. Really makes you appreciate the plays into traffic where the puck finds it's mark a few times and a solid play develops. Nice to see Kesler back to his speedy self and a dominant presence on most of his shifts. Cody Hodgson was noticeable in a positive way as were Samuelsson, Scatchard and Oberg. Lou was solid and it was nice to see Hordichuk score. For an exhibition game without Sedins and several other regulars in the lineup it was an enjoyable evening that provided a taste of things to come in the main course.
