lovely voices! lovely local composer!
by Criticus on 2011-11-21Chan Centre For The Performing Arts - VancouverIt was great to hear the works of a local, contemporary composer for a change. I think there are too many classical concerts of dead composers of previous centuries who, though absolutely great in some ways, do not speak to our times, unlike the composer of Requiem for Peace. It was a very thoughtuful, creative and sensitive composition, with choice poetry incorporated. It was also great to hear some fine, local singers. I particularly liked hearing Kathleen Allan who has a very pure tone and was very moving. I would love to hear her again! There is plenty of local talent in our midst and there is no need to bring in "international stars." Sometimes these international stars are very spectacular but more often I just wonder what all the fuss is about. Think local in all ways! Not just food-wise. Let's support more our local artists!
