This was our first visit to Casino Rama. Elizabeth and I arrived at 5:00 p.m. Our concert wouldn’t begin until 8:00 p.m. We figured we would have lots of time to eat and look around before the show started. Wrong! Much wasted time trying to get into one of their ten restaurants. Long line-ups everywhere and more than once we were told the earliest they could seat us was 7:30 p.m. I regretted not having made a reservation. Now I know what to expect next time. We ended up dining at Cedar. The cornbread came quickly and was delicious, but a long, long, long wait for our main course, such that there was no time for dessert. Clearly, they need to hire more staff in the kitchen.
The concert with Vince Gill started just a few minutes after 8:00 p.m. Vince’s voice was strong and clear and his band was excellent during the rocking numbers, but did him a disservice during the ballads. Everyone in the band was banging away and drowning out the vocals. I would have much preferred a couple of acoustic numbers. Later in the concert, the band was more subdued, and maybe this was more a function of the crew on the sound board. Vince only performed one track from 'Guitar Slinger', his latest release. He did play all of his hits, with the exception of the duets, of course, and there was a one-song encore. There were no flashy audio-visual effects, just some vertical panels on the wall behind the band with computer-generated graphics.
As previously mentioned, this was our first visit to Casino Rama. About three-quarters of the way through the concert, folks started getting up and walking out, in the middle of a song, no less. And more and more people followed, until it was a constant and steady parade of people leaving. I figured they had come to Casino Rama for the day on a package tour and had to catch their bus back to Toronto or wherever, but it was disruptive. There should have been a brief time-out so that everyone who had to catch a bus could get up and leave at the same time.
I had hoped to pick up some Vince Gill merchandise, but found none for sale. Vince is a talented musician and gifted songwriter, with lyrics that poignantly speak to the human condition. He is a true gentleman and a great ambassador for country music. I would rate his concert as 4½ stars out of 5. For the venue itself, only 2 stars out of 5.
