WEEN IN CONCERT:

From joke-rock heroes to experimental weirdos, Ween left no stone unturned in their 25 years of tongue-in-cheek sonic exploration before parting ways in 2012. The band’s cult following dreamed of a reunion, and in late 2015 their wish was granted when Gene and Dean Ween teamed up once again to bring their weird and wild sounds back to stages everywhere. Since the band's return, audiences have eaten up their impressive musicianship, off-the-wall humor, and eclectic catalog of fan favorites like “L.M.L.Y.P.”, “Bumblebee”, and “Push th’ Little Daises”.  Whether they’re putting their idiosyncratic twist on classic rock bravado, honky tonk country, or Prince’s “Minneapolis sound”, the two always manage to turn their diverse influences into something that can only be described as Ween—and that’s exactly what ticket buyers want.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Ween began as a series of tape machine experiments made by New Hope, PA natives Aaron Freeman and Mickey Melchiondo—otherwise known as Gene and Dean Ween. Starting in 1984 the duo began performing along to pre-recorded backing tracks, which they eventually converted into a series of late ‘80s cassette releases. After developing a cult following with performances at venues like Trenton, NJ’s famed City Gardens, the group attracted the attention of Twin/Tone Records, which commissioned the group’s 1990 debut GodWeenSatan: The Oneness. Ween jumped to major label Elektra for 1993’s Pure Guava and began to tour tirelessly, ultimately becoming one of the biggest cult bands to emerge in the ‘90s. Despite their success, Freeman walked away from the group in 2012 to deal with his drug and alcohol abuse. Ween thrilled fans in 2015 when they announced that a refocused and refreshed Freeman would be joining them for several live performances. While the reunion has fans excited to hear old favorites, devoted listeners are just as eager to see if Ween returns to the studio to release their first album in nearly a decade.

    trainwreck.

by Talisto on 2011-01-26Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

Pretty much the worst performance ever. Gene was a complete mess, trainwrecking so badly that the rest of the band just left the stage and never came back. Can I get a refund??

    An unprofessional piece of crap

by coles on 2011-01-26Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

Ya, Ween is wacky, unpredictable yadda yadda, but when the lead singer can barely hold himself up and is so blitzed that the rest of the band mutiny's then they deserved to be fried by the press. I'll get my revenge on the price of the tickets. I'm pirating every album of theirs and they'll never get another cent from me. Enjoy the rest of the tour, losers!

    Was it some bad acid????

by Mace on 2011-01-26Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

First Ween show I have attended. I have heard nothing but rave reviews of past shows, so my expectations were high. Thought the show was alright to start off, and it went downhill fast! That was the most disappointing show I have ever seen!

    Whaaaaa?

by GirlEvie on 2011-01-26Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

The show started off pretty good, with the exception of Gene singing off key..then he started getting all weird and laying down on the stage. They played a good 2 hours before stuff hit the fan. I'm not sure what happened after that last jam, but the rest of the band just walked off stage and left him up there alone. It left me with a feeling of apathy. I expected to hang out with others that I met up with at the show, but I just went home to bed. If they came back, I might go, but they would definitely have to convice me that I'll get my money's worth.

    First Not-Totally-Awesome Ween Show..

by DreadPirateRobert on 2011-01-26Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

Given that the previous 7(?) times I've seen Ween here in Vancouver they've been indescribably awesome, playing for 3+ hours, gigantic love-fests with the adoring fans, and genuinely bringing the love in return, this was the first time they didn't totally rock. Only (!) 2+ hours of Ween, and poor Gener was a little too "primed" to put forth his best effort. In fact, the band gave up on him at the end, leaving him to some drunken noodling on the guitar (he's not the band's guitarist) while he gamely muddled through some of his earlier Pod-era tunes. That said, there were some great highlights. The spectacle and power of Buckingham Green, nice groove to an older Tender Situation, Mutilated Lips went well, Transdermal Celebration was great, and the cover of David Bowie's Let's Dance rocked. But it was the worst Ween show they've ever played in this city, and the crowd was disappointed. To show up in huge numbers, pack the Queen E for a band that hasn't released an album since 2007, these were die-hard fans, and they deserved better. At least they were all really high.

This was my first time seeing Ween and I had really high expectations as I had heard they are phenomenal live. Gene had some trouble, causing the band to abandon him onstage where he attempted to badly play a few more songs by himself. The concert was cut short and even though they still played 2.5 hours, the audience was left with a bitter taste and general uneasiness. Despite this, I was left in awe of Ween and can only imagine how awesome they usually are! I will definitely give them another try, hence the 4 star rating.

    meltdown! want my money back!

by skylar35 on 2011-01-26Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

I understand that when you are going to a Ween concert the chances are that they have been partying before the show. However, I have never seen such a botched concert in my life. The singer was wasted and couldnt sing or tune or play his guitar! The entire band left the drunk singer out there on the stage alone to hang himself with his sloppy drunk solo performance. It was painful to watch. Finally the band just left and didnt comwe back. No encore. No fun at all. I didn't pay for that and I deserve a refund along with the other people that paid 50 buck to sit there and witness that gong show!

Wether you've been with the band from the get go or are a relatively new listener, there was a little something for everyone, including a couple of surprise covers!

Amazing performance, great set list, great crowd. These guys have been playing for over 20 years and still bring and play a 3 hour set full of energy. Phenomenal musicianship and stage presence.

    So good it rained indoors

by LudicriousSpeed on 2010-07-30Kool Haus - Toronto

Got what I expected from Ween and they were just as good as they were 12 years ago. For $7-$8 a drink the Kool Haus should invest in some kind of proper ventilation/AC system so that its patrons don't getting pelted with drops of water during the show from the ceiling.
