West Side Story was entertaining and touching

by Mike42 on 2012-03-19National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Although this production veered a little too much into teenaged sex jokes and away from real emotion, it still managed to capture the audience's attention with energetic dancing and signing and that great music. The set design was outstanding. The heavy use of Spanish by the Puerto Rican characters added verisimilitude, but made those characters harder to relate to because we couldn't understand the details of their experiences.

    West Side story

by Anonymous on 2012-03-19National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I did not like the foreign languages used. It would be better if all songs and dialogue were in English. I also do not like the request at end of show for donations! After paying 100 for a ticket, I think a portion of ticket price should go to the cause performers support.

West Side Story was a performance to remember!

by 80dancequeen on 2012-03-18National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Sat in Mezzanine level and had a great view of the stage. The opening scene was creative and powerful. The dancing was mesmerizing and very well choreographed with great precision they seemed to glide across the stage. The leads sang seemingly without effort but we had no trouble hearing or understanding them. Maria was exceptional as was Tony. All in all I felt I was in Broadway watching a show. Great job.

An overall good performance. Not as dynamic as other musicals such as the Lion King. The biggest drawback were the seats though. Although they were in the Orchestra the view was blocked by heads in front. The NAC really needs to upgrade their seating and put in theatre style seats.

    Disappointing West Side Story

by Gigi14 on 2012-03-17National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

We were looking forward to WSD but it did not deliver. The singing of the two leads were not meshing well at all. Maria's voice was very powerful and covered Tony's voice. Did not expect the "opera" style singing either. Although we knew the story, having interactions between the Sharks in Spanish did not allow us to understand all (that was a minor detail). I was also surprised with some of the vulgarity. A disappointing evening!

    SO wonderful!

by Andrea1987 on 2012-03-17National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The show was so energetic. Dancers used every bit of the stage so you were able to see the full range of movement. The actors playing Anita and Bernardo stole the show! They really gave 110% to the performance. I loved the use of Spanish also, it wasn't used in the original and I thought it brought authenticity to the story!! Definitely a must-see show

West Side Story - great singing and dancing

by Philabel on 2012-03-16National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I liked the singing and dancing, very well done, beautiful voices. I found it difficult when it was in Spanish; could understand the story but would have liked to understand what was said. Not one of my favourite Broadway show, the story is a bit grim.

West Side Story was the best!!!!

by AllTheWorldIsAStage on 2012-03-16National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

My husband and children went with me to see the play. I know every word to every song in West Side Story and I was not disappointed. The voices of Maria and Tony were perfectly matched. The voices of all the actors were easy to hear. The orchestra played flawlessly. All in all I had a fantastic time. True to my word I did not sing out loud until I was leaving the theatre.

West Side Story like being there

by Bimster on 2012-03-16National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

From the opening curtain my attention was piqued. The sound from the orchestra was fantastic. The scenery was so well completed that I could imagine being right there in the streets of New York. The voices were so very good and managed to transfer me into the realm of the conflicts that surrounded the storey. The choreography followed and transfixed me to the point I could envisage the fights, the love and the extreme sorrow. My only complaint was that when the singing was spot on the the choreography was a "tad" off. I quickly over came this however as the whole experience was thoroughly enjoyable. I certainly recommend this production and ALL of the singers.

Was too slow and there was too much Spanish. Made it hard to follow ( especially for my daughter). It would be nice if the NAC would rate their shows as to age appropriateness. Parents should know whether there are scenes of rape etc beforehand.

Loved it. Thought the lead singers were great. Occasionally (and for the most part I liked it) the use of Spanish got in the way of the story. I know the story well so it didn't bother me as much but my friend found some parts difficult to follow,

Entertaining but you can't help but feel it could be greater than in was. Part of this may be due to me being a fan of the movie which has differences from the stage version. But the additional spanish lyrics (though an admirable and modern touch) made me "miss" the original moments.

Amazing show for first time in New York City

by JFay on 2010-11-08Palace Theatre New York - New York

If you are a fan of Musicals then West Side Story is a must see. Beautiful costumes and scene backdrops that really take you into the story. The acting was very well done, as was the singing and although they did speak in Spanish (i think) for some of the story you could easily get he gist of what they were saying. For my first Broadway Musical in New York it was amazing and i wish i could go back to see more.

    West Side Story rocks!

by wssfan on 2010-10-18Fisher Theatre - Detroit

I brought my granddaughter to see the play because she is a dancer. She was captivated. I first saw West Side Story as a teen and was thrilled to carry on the tradition with my granddaughter.
