Well done, but didn't grab me

by CyclingMo on 2014-02-25Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

West Side Story is a play I have been wanting to see for a number of years. Although the actors were very good, I found that the play didn't seem to have any "depth". If I did recommend it to a friend, it would be with a qualifier that it isn't for everyone.

It was ok. Not as exciting as other Broadway shows I have seen.

    Disappointment

by Gecko0122 on 2014-02-25Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Not what I thought it would be, very disappointed. Only a couple of songs did I recognize, thought that there would be more. Sometimes I could not understand what the performers said and I was in the 9th row - issues with the microphones??

    West Side Story disappointing

by tjlamb on 2014-02-25Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Maria was fabulous, beautiful voice, lovely actress. The scenes with the Jets where they displayed crude gestures and even portrayed a rape were unnecessary and took away from the story. It cheapened a classic story.

    West Side Story. Just okay

by Britishchicks on 2014-02-25Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

The dancing was great, singing pretty good, but we did not like the fact that so much of the dialogue and singing was in Spanish.. We know the story well, so we did know approximately what was being said, but for anyone who did not know the story, they would have been in the dark, unless of course they spoke Spanish. Overall, we were disappointed in the production, and that was a shame as it is one of our favourite musicals.

West Side Story was very well done!

by Anonymous on 2014-02-25Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

We all very much enjoyed West Side Story and would definitely recommend! If you are sensitive to or do not want your children to be exposed to certain violence, then...maybe not.

No standing ovation for this production

by truthful on 2014-02-25Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

A lifeless production of a Broadway classic! The Saturday night performance wasn't sold out and I congratulate those who passed on this production. One saving grace was the voices of the male and female leads. But even they couldn't save the show! Edmonton audiences, notorious for their generosity towards the mediocre, had the good sense to refrain from a standing ovation for this one!

West Side Story is a great play

by BriVi on 2014-02-25Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Story is unforgettable, they all had amazing voices for singing - found we could not understand a lot of the talking (too fast, not clear especially with the PR accents, could have been the sound) - I would still recommend it

    Meh

by DisappointedDan on 2014-02-25Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

I was pretty disappointed with this one. I've been to a few shows at the same venue, and this is the first where I was thinking about where I'd rather be. The storyline was weak. All the singing and dancing in the world can't make up for a poor script. Not sure what I was expecting, as I knew the story, but this wasn't it. The songs were bland, and sounded bland. This is the first musical I've seen where the band sounded flat and dull. The vocals weren't much better. Off key and simply flat performances. Compared to past shows, such as South Pacific or Mamma Mia, this one was a clunker.

    A great high school production.

by Girlsnight1 on 2014-02-24Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

A great high school production, but not Broadway Across Canada caliber. The dancing was good but the singing was incomprehensible. The Spanish accents were so thick during the singing and perhaps there were also technical difficulties with the adjusting the sound on the mics but the words were difficult to make out. In a musical the songs tell part of the story and it takes a lot away from the experience when you cannot understand any of them. The words blended into one another so it was one long noise punctuated by the occasional word.

West Side Story had some great moments

by 11315 on 2014-02-23Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

My wife and I did not like the ending where rape and sexual acts were part of the play -this did not add to a presentation which had some very fine dance routines. The sound at times was poor -hard to understand. For the price paid we expected a much better venue!

    West Side Story

I enjoyed the show very much. The performance was great. The role of " Tony " should have been played by a stronger performer. ( in voice and appearance .)

    West side story

by Mytime on 2014-02-21Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

My daughter and I went and although we enjoyed the show we both thought it was one of the least that we have enjoyed. There was some good humor in it, but a lot of dancing in a small stage. The scenery was well done.

West Side Story good but not great

by Ayjaygee on 2014-02-19Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Very energetic cast -- the dancing was amazing. Tony and Maria were well played. The orchestra was a little "thin" and at one point early in the play seemed to be out of tune.

West Side Story is a Good Story

by lageno on 2014-02-19Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

A great cast. They can sing and they can dance. However, there were times when it was hard to understand just what they were saying or singing.

    Not worth the money

by LorelMoro on 2014-02-19Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

I was really excited to see this performance. But incrediably disapointed in the execution. The cheorography wasn't done well, many times the dances were off by a turn, at least. It also seems as though they didn't really use the full stage to it's potential. One of the songs was not annunciated at all, as I had no idea what they were actually singing. The others were clear and recognisable though. Even though this isn't the fault of the touring company, the story also seems to leave several things unconcluded. If I had paid $50 for my tickets/seats, it would have been good. But, the cost was defintely not worth the value.

    West Side Story was amazing!!

by GourmetGranny on 2014-02-19Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

I thoroughly enjoyed the production. I was a little put off that the play had been updated by adding "sexual" suggestions in some of the dancing (Please Officer Krupke was where I noticed that the most). My feelings might be due to my generation (I am over 65) or it might be due to the fact that I took my 14 year old grandaughter and noted that there were much younger children there as well and I don't feel it added anything to the play. I also found it hard to follow some of the songs which the producers/director chose to sign partly in Spanish (???) as this was my first time to see a live production -- my only other experience was the movie way back when and everything was in English. I still very much enjoyed the performance and would go to see it again.

West Side Story was just "OK".

by Nakiska on 2014-02-19Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

The dialogue and singing had poor acoustics which made the performance hard to understand . Despite wearing microphones, the actors were shouting their lines throughout the performance (and in many cases, spoke way to fast) which made it hard to understand what they were saying and specifically through those with higher pitched voices. The auditorium has unbelievable acoustical properties and I think the audio would have carried throughout the theatre without microphones. I did find the dancing to be exceptional.
