West Side Story is a play that relies heavily on choreography and indeed the choreography was fantastic, as it should be. Some of the songs are sung partly in Spanish. It was a good thing I knew all the words otherwise I would have missed the point. In the song "Tonight" it seemed that the Jets (who sang in English) were translating what the Sharks were singing in Spanish (which was not the case) and in the pivotal song "A Boy Like That" Anita singing in Spanish, destroyed her message about the strength and power of love. Again, if you didn't know the words you would miss the point. Kudos for Riff, A-Rab and Glad Hand who were well played but singing done by the character Tony was too operatic and often sounded off key especially in the songs "Something's Coming" and "Maria". Tony and Maria lacked the innocence of first love. Bernardo was portrayed as sleasy instead of a proud, classy Puerto Rican boy. Anita and Anybody's were over the top. Schrank and Krupke were too angry and the violence played by Krupke was unnecessary as was the crude sexual gestures and references throughout the play and especially in "Gee, Officer Krupke". These references took away focus on the mesage. The ending was terrible! The entire part of the gangs coming together to carry Tony's body was completely omitted. That is the key message of the play: peace only through tragedy.
Overall, I found it was disappointing. For a professional performance, I found it sorely lacking. I have seen better acting in an amateur show.
