About

In his 1942 essay The Myth of Sisyphus, Camus wrote that "All great deeds and all great thoughts have a ridiculous beginning. Great works are often born on a street corner or in a restaurant's revolving door." 15 years later Richard Wayne Penniman wrote "Wop bop a loo bop a wop bam boom", an undeniably powerful vocalization that on any given Wednesdayin any given situation, civilized or otherwise, is still fully capable of setting somebody's stuff aflame. Over ten years and seven long players into their career, White Denim are still in the relentless pursuit of a thread - in other words, a wick.

The Austin, Texas band have carefully and continuously studied the greatest records ever made, but they write songs just dumb enough to drink, dance, and fight to. Theirs is a music that aims for the whole body, while equally satisfying the mind. While it has morphed, expanded, and even burst apart, White Denim's sincere and human drive and ability to spark true rock & roll exhilaration have been unerring constants of the band's 10-year existence.

"White Denim are one of the best live bands you will ever see if you live to be a million. That's not excitable hyperbole, merely a bald statement of undeniable fact..." -- Time Out

"The last great rock & roll band!" -- The Guardian

I'm wearing only White Denim from now on

by Osbaldiston on 2012-04-18The Horseshoe Tavern - Toronto

OK, I've been looking forward to this show for a while now, and my expectations were surpassed by a mile. Coming off an opening slot on Wilco's arena tour, no one would blame these guys for taking a break for a bit, but oh no! They immediately hit the road again to do small clubs in some small places ... anyhoo, you've gotta' love the band's DIY ethic, somewhat reminiscent of an 80's hardcore outfit ... selling their own merch, setting up their own gear, slowly meandering into their set ... from the opening of the show to the very end the crowd stood in stunned silence as the band simply TORE IT UP!! Their old stuff is given new life with the addition of a second guitarist (who looks like he knows he's the luckiest guy in music right now), and everything off of their last release sounded simply perfect . Anyone familiar with the catalogue knows there is no defining the genre these guys are in ... suffice to say that the writing, musicianship, and tightness of White Denim is currently unmatched. And after the show? Well don't they just wander out to chat with the fans that stuck around. See these guys, and soon.
