WILCO IN CONCERT:

Though Wilco always uses the sounds of Americana as their launchpad, they’ve managed to explore a universe of musical possibilities over the past twenty years. With his poetic turns of phrase and endearingly raspy vocals, frontman Jeff Tweedy provides a country heart to their music that always wins over fans at their live performances. While he delivers the earthy grit, the rest of the band soars into the stratosphere, incorporating everything from ambient electronica to Dixieland jazz. But they also know how to rock on epics like “Impossible Germany”, “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart”, and “A Shot in the Arm”. Though ticket buyers never quite know what to expect from these innovative musical adventurers, they know they can count on Wilco to deliver a an electrifying, genre-defying concert experience every time they take the stage on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Frontman Jeff Tweedy formed Wilco out of the ashes of his earlier alt-country band Uncle Tupelo, absorbing most of the lineup to release the new band’s 1995 debut A.M. The group quickly developed a reputation for incorporating experimental elements with their next two albums Being There (1996) and Summerteeth (1999). Despite those sonically ambitious releases, nothing prepared fans for the aural onslaught of 2001’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, which pushed the boundaries of music production and defied genre lines all together. The band’s record label famously refused to release the album, while overwhelming fan support and critical adulation lead to a bidding war that netted Wilco a lucrative recording contract. Their next album A Ghost Is Born (2004) won a Grammy for Alternative Album of the Year. Following several critically acclaimed albums and core additions to the group, Wilco remains a vital and restlessly creative force in both their live concerts and their recorded output, which includes 2015’s secretly released Star Wars.

    Wilco wonderful layers so melodic

by stringgs on 2010-02-19Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

I finally got to see Wilco. WWW.WOW.wow I've been a huge Neil Young fan since his first solo album. I learned how to play guitar because of Neil and the Beatles. Wilco's music combine the feel of these artists and the early sonic landscape of Pink Floyd. Their awesome instrument choices.... great ears, great vocals, stunning lyrical content , push through all the crap available on todays music scene. A big thanks to Jeff Tweedy for his insight to life and his wonderful melodies.

Loved it!! They played soooooo.... many good songs and had so much energy and stage presence. I've seen them play before at Mac Hall and it was so much better at the Jube. The sound is incredible and there really isn't a bad seat in the house. Awesome show

by janbot on 2010-02-18TCU Place - Saskatoon

The venue was the perfect place for this intimate concert. Every seat was a great seat to see and hear Wilco. After a long concert of playing the favorites, he continued to play for 35 minutes during his Encore. Like the energizer bunny, the tunes kept coming. AWESOME!!! WILCO love you baby!

by horhe on 2010-02-18Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Good overall, but what's with the end of every song the band tryring to make as much noise as possible with their instruments for 2 or 3 minutes. It kinda became a distration after awhile.

Rock and Roll Gonna Save My Soul

by Goldo on 2010-02-18TCU Place - Saskatoon

It was too amazing. They played for like 2 1/2 hours, the encore was at least 10 songs long, they played every song I could have wanted them to (with the possible exception of one, but I forgive them) they were incredibly tight and put on a great show with lights and so many stacks and guitars and bells and whistles, it definitely reaffirmed my faith in Rock and Roll!!!

    Wilco (the concert) was excellent

by Tedwin on 2010-02-17Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

For a band that has recently been labelled 'dad-rock' Wilco delivered a high-energy show that would rival any band and fans in their peak of youth. The show was full of multiple high points that ranged from the softest acoustic guitar to soaring crescendos of feedback and sound in the vein of the end of the Beatles 'A Day in the Life'. They played many of the best songs from recent albums 'Wilco (The Album)' and 'Sky, Blue Sky' and more than satisfied fans of older material by playing favorites from all their albums and even letting the audience sing lead vocals on the crowd favorite 'Jesus, etc.' The only slight negative in the whole show was that Nels Cline's guitar could have been louder in the mix, however, having said that, his main solos were fabulously audible. .

    Wilco was amazing

by cdnwilcofan on 2010-02-17Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

This was my 2nd show. First was 3 years ago...Same venue. Equally good. A must see. Bought 2 tickets last time and 6 this time. The friends I took have become instant fans. Even if you don't know their music it is so easy to sit (not stand) and enjoy every note, every solo, for every minute. Last time Wilco was here they asked the crowd 'why they wern't standing' - They did for the rest of the night. A bad back meant my wife only saw 1/2 the show. This time, the crowd enjoyed their seats and everyone enjoyed the show. Nels Clein has climbed to superstar status if you ask me. Tight is and understatement. WHat classification do they fit into? Not Alt Country, Not Alt Rock, Not Dad Rock.... Just a Great Rock Band with many capable artists.

    wilco rocks!!!!!

by snodancer on 2010-02-17Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

This was my first wilco concert and I was not disappointed. I like the sky blue sky cd and was glad to hear some of it. But I was glad they played spider song and more of their upbeat material in latter half of the concert. Acoustics were pretty good with bass not being too loud. The opening band califone was fair.

    Wilco Will Do!

by Turkjr on 2010-02-17Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Great show spanning their catalogue! The musicianship among the entire band was awesome. A 2-hour set including a 4 song encore provided perhaps the best value I can remember in 30 years of concert-going.

They played for a solid 2 hours, the band members were in top form, and a little funny banter didn't hurt either. Hope they come back next year.
