    Swell Season was Magic

by JoybewithYou on 2010-07-11Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

Friday evening Swell Season played the main stage at the Winnipeg Folk Festival. The music was great. Most songs were from the Once movie with a few from the new Strict Joy album. This included a great version of Low Rising, a beautiful song sung by Marketa called "If You Want Me" and of course their Oscar-winning song "Falling Slowly". They opened with Glen and Marketa singing a Tim Buckley song. I don't know the title but the words start off about a butterfly and include words like "I want to get to know everything about you". The crowd was not a quiet, intimate crowd which effected the atmosphere of the show. There was a strong pocket of Swell Season fans who sang along with several songs and obviously greatly enjoyed the show. Glen closed the show ( during the encore) with a Vampire Town song which was also a cover. This was a great closing as many audience members moved to the front and stood and joined in as Glen encouraged everyone to join in. By this time it was quite dark and getting cool. The Peatbog Fairies followed but I didn't see the whole show. The music sounded great- what I heard of it.We wanted to find our car while we still could see a bit. Overall the show was great but it is a very different experience in that type of setting.

A wonderful experience! All the music we heard was very good. Love the setting and the way everything is so well organized and running smoothly. The whole atmosphere is laid back and friendly. Whale tails with herbs and garlic! The Cat Empire!!!!!

Opening Night at the Wpg. Folk Festival

by 1oldfolkie on 2010-07-09Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

It was a wonderful night of music, especially with Emmylou Harris and the Wailin'Jennys, who I had come to see. Even the downpour of rain didn't ruin this experience. A pleasant surprise was in store for all when Jimmy Cliff closed the show with a soul rousing, racous selection of his many reggae originals that had everyone on their feet, dancing and singing along! The only negative experience was the wait to get into the gate before the concert. Apparently, there were some technical difficulties with the sound and the audience was not allowed access to the site until it was resolved. For this reason, I may choose not to attend opening night next time, but rather go the following day.

Stand up comedy and folk music combined!

by littlebean on 2010-05-05PARK THEATRE - WINNIPEG

This show was amazing. Both Rose and Amelia performed beautifully! Rose made the entire audience hang on her every word with her natural, genuine humor. Her songs touched my heart and her voice is so beautiful. Overall an amazing night of wonderful folk music in the perfect setting.

    Rose and Amelia Nailed It!!!

by kathb on 2010-04-30PARK THEATRE - WINNIPEG

Rose Cousins and Amelia Curran were sooo fabulous. We have both of Amelia's CD's, and now own one of Rose's, will play them til they wear out! Both artists also have a very good sense of humour, their anecdotes were very entertaining.

    Lovely show

    by Daedalus71 on 2010-04-30PARK THEATRE - WINNIPEG

This was a very lovely show. Both performers were great and there was a funny friendly rapport between them; both came on during each others' sets.I hadn't heard Rose Cousins before and bought both her CDs on the strength of her performance; her songwriting is competent but her voice soars. Also her stag banter was hilarious; she is a natural live performer. Amelia Curran had the better songs and her raw, complicated tales of love and messed-up-ness came across that much more forcefully live.
