Winnipeg Jets History

The Winnipeg Jets were founded in 1997 as the Thrashers, and began play in the 1999–2000 NHL season, spending 11 seasons in Atlanta and making the playoffs once in 2006-2007. In 2011, the franchise was sold to True North Sports and Entertainment, which relocated the team to Winnipeg and adopted the name of the city's original franchise in the World Hockey Association, the Jets.

Major league hockey dates back to 1972 in Winnipeg, which was home to one of the founding franchises of the WHA and one of four (along with Quebec, Hartford and Edmonton) to join the NHL when the leagues merged in 1979. The original Jets moved to Phoenix in 1996 and became the Phoenix Coyotes (then the Arizona Coyotes, who were in play from 1994 to 2024). In the 14 seasons that the Jets have been in Winnipeg, they’ve made eight playoff appearances, including a run to the Western Conference Finals in 2018.

In 2016, the team established the Winnipeg Jets Hall of Fame, with the "Hot Line" trio of Anders Hedberg, Bobby Hull and Ulf Nilsson as the inaugural inductees. Recent inductees include Teemu Selänne and Teppo Numminen.

  • Wpg Jets vs Atizona

Seats were great! Service was great! We were sitting directly underneath a cold air vent which blew on us the whole time, so we were freezing. That was very uncomfortable. Wouldn’t sit in those seats again.

  • Jets vs BlueJackets

by Patti on 2022-03-28Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

Long lineup for entry and for washroom but both moved very quickly. Greeted by Kevin Donnelly upon entrance who was welcoming and helpful. Sat in section 211, great seats and great fans ( friendly and respectful ). Felt proud to be part of the warm reception for Laine and Roslovic. Thoroughly enjoyed the game in spite of questionable penalty against Morrissey late in the game which resulted in a goal. Thrilled with our win in overtime! Excellent and entertaining experience, five stars!!

  • Noise

by Gumby on 2022-03-28Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 1 out of 5

I did not know this article “might be” in print possibly. I could take out some wording and just talked about noise and clarity. I would prefer to. To use my story to much. When I needed help from people there was none to be had and my main concern now is living.

  • Keep the masks and vaccination requirements

by FastEddy on 2022-02-22Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

Enjoyable outing to see the Jets play McDavid and co. Part of the pleasure was the feeling of relative safety knowing that masking and vaccination requirements were in place. Hoping that these requirements will be maintained after March 15. Without them I would not feel comfortable sitting shoulder to shoulder with strangers.

  • Not the greatest experience

    by 204JetsFan on 2022-02-21Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 2 out of 5

I have been to several events at this venue including Jets games in the last few months. The fan experience wasn’t optimal on this last visit in particular. We were told in the line up to get into the building that our purses were too large and that we had to either put them back in our vehicle or check them at another location. The purses being carried were far from oversized and I have never been disallowed it (or any other purse) into a building before. If this were common practice or communicated via email or on signage prior to getting into a long line up, I could have been more receptive. I am always willing to have my bags checked, but not being able to bring it with me was unreasonable. My purse has a built in wallet for all of my ID and financial cards; I had to pull everything out and stuff it into my shallow pockets. This policy was inconsistently applied as I saw several people carrying large bags in the building. Please take into account that people need to be able to carry in items in their bags out of necessity; for example, medication, feminine hygiene products, items for children accompanying parents, etc. I also expect to be able to wash my hands in water that is above freezing temperatures in the bathroom if I am spending hundreds of dollars to attend an event. All staff I interacted with in the building were very nice. I especially appreciated how security managed some unruly guests who nearly got into a physical altercation in the stands.

  • Forced to ware a mask

The mask rules are dumb everyone in the building is vaccinated why do I need a mask

  • Usher who thinks she's Scerpico and her boss is no better

by Journey and Toto fan on 2021-12-25Canada Life Centre (Previously Bell MTS Place) - WinnipegRating: 1 out of 5

My 11 year old daughter had a sign and put it up against the glass for her favorite player to read. The usher came down and told her she couldn't be at the glass where the isle is because of safety concerns and that she had to leave. So many tears later I ask the nice people sitting along the glass if she can put her sign there and they were kind enough to let her. Here's the rub, everywhere else in the arena there were kids with signs on the glass in the isle area. When we pointed that out to the usher lady she escalated our concern to a jerk who then said they only have control of their section-I call BS. True North Entertainment controls the arena and they work for them. So enforce the rules equitably or don't enforce at all. Using their flawed logic I could walk around maskless in a different section and have 3 beers in my hand but not in their section. They were both power hungry jerks AND there were lots more kids who came after we moved who WERE on the glass ON the isle and weren't told to move. So just a pathetic performance by a group who take for granted that Winnipeggers will continue to pay outrageous prices and be treated like garbage. No wonder their not selling the place out anymore.

  • Jets are the greatest!

by PLD is great but still a Laine fan on 2021-12-22Canada Life Centre (Previously Bell MTS Place) - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

The game was awesome. I wish Paul Maurice hadn't left but to be fair we need to give Coach Lowry a fair opportunity to demonstrate his coaching skills. My only disappointment was that I was unaware there were to be free snow globes given out to first 10,000 ticket holders to Sunday's game. Had I know I would've arrived sooner. Go Jet!! ;)

by Lisagh on 2021-12-22Canada Life Centre (Previously Bell MTS Place) - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

I actually didn’t go, because I was sick of the Jets losing and figured it wouldn’t be worth my time, the parking, walking in the cold, wearing a mask for two and a half hours and sitting there just to be disappointed again. I was happily surprised, in my cozy warm home, to see the team have a good showing. Maybe I’ll use my ticket for the next game I have coming up.

  • Lotsa fun as usual!!

by Mike on 2021-12-20Canada Life Centre (Previously Bell MTS Place) - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

I’m a jets fan and always have been. Going to a jets game is always lotsa fun. This time I got to take my daughter for her first ever game and she loved it. She wants to go again. Even during the covid pandemic we enjoyed ourselves mask or not. The experience of national hockey league game is second to none. And we got to see Alex Oveckin score a goal. :) which was pretty cool! The Canada life staff are doing a great job even during a time like this. We loved it and will go again very soon.

  • Had a great time

  • Terrible

by J on 2021-12-08Canada Life Centre (Previously Bell MTS Place) - WinnipegRating: 1 out of 5

Jets fans are disrespectful, rude and arrogant. The arena is too small, lines are too big in the arena and to get into the arena (it’s Winnipeg for god sakes nobody wants to stand outside for that long)

  • Great time

by RyeGuy67 on 2021-12-08Canada Life Centre (Previously Bell MTS Place) - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

Game was great, venue was good. Not my first or last time going to an event either be it a jets game when my leafs are in town or good metal concert, its a great place to spend an evening. We had seats at the very top row and was still great to watch a game. I hope someday ill be able to fork out more money so the wife, kids and myself can get a little closer to the action. Only problem i had was with the refereeing during the game so no complaints and i can't wait to go back. I jist wish the leafs were in town more than once a season.
