Winnipeg Jets History

The Winnipeg Jets were founded in 1997 as the Thrashers, and began play in the 1999–2000 NHL season, spending 11 seasons in Atlanta and making the playoffs once in 2006-2007. In 2011, the franchise was sold to True North Sports and Entertainment, which relocated the team to Winnipeg and adopted the name of the city's original franchise in the World Hockey Association, the Jets.

Major league hockey dates back to 1972 in Winnipeg, which was home to one of the founding franchises of the WHA and one of four (along with Quebec, Hartford and Edmonton) to join the NHL when the leagues merged in 1979. The original Jets moved to Phoenix in 1996 and became the Phoenix Coyotes (then the Arizona Coyotes, who were in play from 1994 to 2024). In the 14 seasons that the Jets have been in Winnipeg, they’ve made eight playoff appearances, including a run to the Western Conference Finals in 2018.

In 2016, the team established the Winnipeg Jets Hall of Fame, with the "Hot Line" trio of Anders Hedberg, Bobby Hull and Ulf Nilsson as the inaugural inductees. Recent inductees include Teemu Selänne and Teppo Numminen.

  • A WhiteOut Like No Other

by MissCN on 2018-05-23Whiteout Way - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

What a way to celebrate Winnipeg! I have never been a part of such an amazing atmosphere - downtown was alive! How awesome for the city to come together this way, thanks to our Winnipeg Jets and all the organizers and volunteers that made it happen! Let’s do it again in 2019!!!

  • Fabulous

  • Thank you Winnipeg Jets!!!

Winnipeg has the best hockey fans! The street party was well equipped with necessary amenities, food and drink options over amble space to fit all those who wished to attend. Very well organized!

  • Last whiteout party

by funday on 2018-05-23Whiteout Way - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

It was our first time attending the whiteout party and we had a blast. Very well organized. The only part that I recommend is when it's hot weather, there should be more booths selling cold drinks such as water. I daughter was starting heat stroke so we moved to the shade and it took over 15 mins to get a warm bottle of water. It would of been faster for me to buy beer then water. The beer was cold and the water was warm.

  • Jets Whiteout Street Party

by BluesTuner on 2018-05-23Whiteout Way - WinnipegRating: 3 out of 5

It was great to be there and enjoyed it! Having to get tickets in advance was not a good idea. All 30,000 plus tickets were taken but there was not that many people there by the sounds of it. There were open spaces, not like the original parties were tickets weren't necessary. Supposedly people were getting the maximum number of tickets and not using them as a protest.......I'm sure the ticket scanning could give the true stats but will probably not be made public. Go Jets Go for 2018/19!

It was nice to watch the game with other fans. Too bad we didn't win but it was fun anyway.

  • Food prices?!

    by Sherry1 on 2018-05-21Bell MTS Place - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

I have to say the food is ridiculously expensive! There is no reason for those high prices.

  • Viewing party for jets game

Seats were perfect. Bell MTS should host all major games and important shows like this.

  • #WPGWhiteout Street Party Winnipeg Jets Western Co

by MollyB on 2018-05-17Whiteout Way - WinnipegRating: 3 out of 5

It was such fun taking a bus downtown, getting dressed in white to cheer on our Winnipeg Jets. Although they didn't win tonight, they are a spectacular team and will go on to win the Cup this year! The atmosphere was fun and I would certainly go again. I was very disappointed to find out that that small white towels were handed out to spectators and we did not receive them, nor were we offered them. At least I bought a flag for the car, and if you have 2 spare towels, I would be grateful to have them. Thank you

sound system was way too loud. Made it a really unenjoyable experience. Screens were too small.

Was an awesome time Wish I could go to all of them Go Jets Go!!!

  • by Anonymous on 2018-05-17Whiteout Way - WinnipegRating: 3 out of 5

I got 8 tickets in case we could all go, in the end only 2 people went. I went online and offered them up for anyone who was looking for tickets for free of course. The two who went had a great time. Not happy about needing tickets I feel it's the reason for the poor turnout.

  • Whiteout was great

by JeffT on 2018-05-17Whiteout Way - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

Really enjoyed the entertainment, people, and Jets game. Lots of fans in costume and the energy from fans was terrific

  • Electrifying Experience

by Ozaway on 2018-05-17Whiteout Way - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

This was a surreal electrifying experience that brought people from all walks of life together and cemented a bond which should keep us all connected forever. Winnipeggers have shown tremendous class by maintaining themselves accordingly and regardless of the eventual outcome, that they continue to show that class and leave a positive impression of this city on the global stage as the entire plant is watching our WhiteOut parties. Go Jets Go!

Prebought tickets was a bad idea Everything else was great

  • Excludes on basis of income.

by Egghorn on 2018-05-17Whiteout Way - WinnipegRating: 3 out of 5

Requiring fans to access ticketmaster in order to obtain free tickets for the street party in essence shut out those fans who could benefit from the event the most. Many people do not have an email address let alone a credit card which is what is required to obtain a ticketmaster account. I realize the organizers grappled with a way to control and forecast the numbers attending. But this clearly excludes this group. There should be a better way in which all can be included. Otherwise it is an enjoyable event for those that have the means.
