Winnipeg Jets History

The Winnipeg Jets were founded in 1997 as the Thrashers, and began play in the 1999–2000 NHL season, spending 11 seasons in Atlanta and making the playoffs once in 2006-2007. In 2011, the franchise was sold to True North Sports and Entertainment, which relocated the team to Winnipeg and adopted the name of the city's original franchise in the World Hockey Association, the Jets.

Major league hockey dates back to 1972 in Winnipeg, which was home to one of the founding franchises of the WHA and one of four (along with Quebec, Hartford and Edmonton) to join the NHL when the leagues merged in 1979. The original Jets moved to Phoenix in 1996 and became the Phoenix Coyotes (then the Arizona Coyotes, who were in play from 1994 to 2024). In the 14 seasons that the Jets have been in Winnipeg, they’ve made eight playoff appearances, including a run to the Western Conference Finals in 2018.

In 2016, the team established the Winnipeg Jets Hall of Fame, with the "Hot Line" trio of Anders Hedberg, Bobby Hull and Ulf Nilsson as the inaugural inductees. Recent inductees include Teemu Selänne and Teppo Numminen.

  • Amazing experience

If you can’t get to a home playoff game, watching an away game at the Bell Mts centre is the second best. Being with a lively crowd with the in-house announcer, Jay Richardson, the goal lights and celebratory music is fun and makes you feel part of something. Family friendly and enjoyable for all ages.

  • VIEWING PARTY is the WAY TO GO!

    by carlyg23 on 2018-05-13Bell MTS Place - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

We had a blast at the viewing party. End seats were perfect top 100's 200's even more so. We won of course, making the experience even more amazing. BELL MTS had all their vendors open and it was a great turnout. I suggest this be done more often!

Great even. There were a lot of kids and people who had never been in the Bell MTS Centre. The $10.00 tickets were affordable

The Jets viewing party was as good as hoped, Lots of energized fans so into the game we forgot we weren't watching live at times. Seats in the 200 level word be the most straight on view of the screen.

  • Good hockey game but venue disappoints

by ymme111 on 2018-05-02Bell MTS Place (Formerly MTS Centre) - WinnipegRating: 3 out of 5

It was an enjoyable game. Seat location in the corner made for a not so great view of the corner of the scoreboard screens. My big disappointment was in the concession prices. Way too expensive. And not one item on special for an away game event. Seriously $10 for a draft beer?!! Would not go again. If I did I would make sure I ate my fill in advance at home or a local restaurant before going there. And have nothing inside the arena.

  • Best $10 I ever spent!

This was an amazing option for low income families that are trying to expose their kids to Manitoba life. Would be great for new immigrants as well.

The viewing party was a great event to attend. The atmosphere and energy was exciting. The city coming together to support our Jets is what it is all about.

  • Whiteout party was awesome

by Carebear1982 on 2018-04-30Bell MTS Place (Formerly MTS Centre) - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

It was awesome to watch the jets play. Cool that they gave out towels just like a real game. Just wish that when giving away items was only where there was lots of people seating.

  • WOW!! What a Game, What a Night!

by WinnipegHIPfan on 2018-04-24Bell MTS Place (Formerly MTS Centre) - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

If you are a Jets Fan, this was THE game to be at in Round 1 of the Playoffs. Bell MTS Place was loud, and the place looked spectacular as always with a Winnipeg Whiteout! Although I was a little worried initially that the seats were going to be bad (but didn't care as I just wanted to be there) they ended up being not to bad (314, Row 11). We had The Wild's goalie right in front for 1st and 3rd period and goals were easy to see, and I could see what was going on at the other end of rink. The view of the fans was incredible too. Bonus was it was only $300 for 2 tickets which I thought was affordable for a playoff game.
