Winnipeg Jets History

The Winnipeg Jets were founded in 1997 as the Thrashers, and began play in the 1999–2000 NHL season, spending 11 seasons in Atlanta and making the playoffs once in 2006-2007. In 2011, the franchise was sold to True North Sports and Entertainment, which relocated the team to Winnipeg and adopted the name of the city's original franchise in the World Hockey Association, the Jets.

Major league hockey dates back to 1972 in Winnipeg, which was home to one of the founding franchises of the WHA and one of four (along with Quebec, Hartford and Edmonton) to join the NHL when the leagues merged in 1979. The original Jets moved to Phoenix in 1996 and became the Phoenix Coyotes (then the Arizona Coyotes, who were in play from 1994 to 2024). In the 14 seasons that the Jets have been in Winnipeg, they’ve made eight playoff appearances, including a run to the Western Conference Finals in 2018.

In 2016, the team established the Winnipeg Jets Hall of Fame, with the "Hot Line" trio of Anders Hedberg, Bobby Hull and Ulf Nilsson as the inaugural inductees. Recent inductees include Teemu Selänne and Teppo Numminen.

  • White Out gave me shivers!

by canadianatural on 2018-04-23Bell MTS Place (Formerly MTS Centre) - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

Just the experience of being part of the white out was amazing! I have never heard a louder crowd in my life. When the Jets first came on the ice at the beginning of the game, it was so loud and exciting, it gave me goose bumps. The best part was the Jets were on fire! They totally dominated the Wild even though the shots on goal were a bit higher for the Wild. If you get the chance to attend a playoff game in Winnipeg, DO IT!

Excited to attend the game, as first playoff game since Jets 1.0. The seats are the last row of the third tier. The view was great, was between the goalie & red line in the south end. Would definitely sit in the seats again. The crowd was awesome, the team played fabulous and we won.

  • Line ups for days....

by AmberD83 on 2018-04-14Bell MTS Place (Formerly MTS Centre) - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

The line ups in the upper concourse are BRUTAL. I left the 2nd period early so I could go to the bathroom and grab a drink and Jet Dog. I would of only had time to use the bathroom otherwise. I also think my Jey Dog days are over. The hot dog is always luke warm at best. My boyfriend wasn't pleased he stood in line for a couple beers just to be told the till was down and he'd have to go stand in another line. A line that had 20 people in it. He did not get his beers after waiting in line already. That being said, the seats had a great view and the game was awesome. Trying to get in has also been improved. The process is much quicker than it used to be.

  • Awesome Go Jets Go!!!!

by Maas20 on 2018-04-14Bell MTS Place (Formerly MTS Centre) - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

Atmosphere was surreal! Excellent value for what I paid for, just being there was well worth the expense. The staff is always helpful, everyone in the building that prepped and maintained the condition of the building did a wonderful job. Its never a dull moment being in Bell/MTS.

  • OMG The Jets were Awesome

by GrammaC4 on 2018-03-30Bell MTS Place (Formerly MTS Centre) - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

What an awesome game to be at, started a little slow for the Jets but I knew they could do it. The predator fan I had sitting next to me was a little obnoxious to say the least so when the Jets pulled it off it was nice and quiet next to me for the first time all night.
