Winnipeg Jets History

The Winnipeg Jets were founded in 1997 as the Thrashers, and began play in the 1999–2000 NHL season, spending 11 seasons in Atlanta and making the playoffs once in 2006-2007. In 2011, the franchise was sold to True North Sports and Entertainment, which relocated the team to Winnipeg and adopted the name of the city's original franchise in the World Hockey Association, the Jets.

Major league hockey dates back to 1972 in Winnipeg, which was home to one of the founding franchises of the WHA and one of four (along with Quebec, Hartford and Edmonton) to join the NHL when the leagues merged in 1979. The original Jets moved to Phoenix in 1996 and became the Phoenix Coyotes (then the Arizona Coyotes, who were in play from 1994 to 2024). In the 14 seasons that the Jets have been in Winnipeg, they’ve made eight playoff appearances, including a run to the Western Conference Finals in 2018.

In 2016, the team established the Winnipeg Jets Hall of Fame, with the "Hot Line" trio of Anders Hedberg, Bobby Hull and Ulf Nilsson as the inaugural inductees. Recent inductees include Teemu Selänne and Teppo Numminen.

  • A huge win by the Jets!!!

    by jetsrule234 on 2016-01-17MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

Dustin Byfuglien scored two goals in what may have been his best game of the season, and rookie sensation Nikolai Ehlers scored on a breakaway to give the Jets a 4-1 lead. Unfortunately, the Jets were not able to hold the lead and overtime was needed. No need to worry because Blake Wheeler scored a minute into overtime and the Jets beat Nashville 5-4.

  • View from Loge Seats

    by rock308 on 2016-01-13MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

We usually sit in the lower bowl but decided to try the new loge seats to see what they were like. The view is great, seats are comfortable, lots of room and there are no interruptions. The only negative is that the cold air blowers are above your head and it was freezing all game long and could not get comfortable. Just wore a turtle neck shirt under a jersey and it was really cold. the people beside us said the same thing. If you sit here, bring extra clothes. Can't they put some diffusers on these vents to redirect some of the air flow. Even the pages on our programs kept blowing open.

  • Lost to buffalo

by douglasfury on 2016-01-13MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 2 out of 5

2pm Sunday game. Drank some expensive but cold beer. Lost 4-2 to Kane and the Sabres. Lost money at shark club but beer was cold and head was on a swivel.

  • Shutdown Ovi

by chiefkewj on 2015-12-08MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

It was a great game of hockey, very close game right to the end. The game started with the refs allowing both sides of getting away with a lot of stuff. before making a call on the Capitals. The Jets scoring with seconds remaining in the first lit up the crowd. The Caps eventual tie in the 2nd set the tight clinching feeling for the remainder of the contest. Hellebuyck was standing on his head all game, and rightfully earned the first star. Thanks to Scheifele's OT goal to give the Jets the win.

  • Watching Leafs lose is always a good time

by chiefkewj on 2015-12-07MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

There may not have been flying jerseys, but it was a great game of hockey and witnessing the Jets decimate the Maple Leafs was a plus. Almost lost my hat when Drew Stafford kicked off Jets scoring with 2 goals, but being unable to get the hat trick before the time expired, lead me to keep my lid. The always split crowd of Leafs and Jets fans is also always the best part, the competing atmosphere, and the battling chants adds more to the game. The split is something to that makes looking forward to watching both teams every year. Since there is limited space below about seating, my only concern is I treated a friend who needed wheelchair seating. We don't decide where we sit, and the people above and behind seemed to complain because we were in the way. So we had to sit back against the wall almost, and could only sit a certain way, which in turn reduced our view of the game. Staff care more about whiners I guess

  • Jets skills competition was loads of fun!

by hugslie on 2015-12-06MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

Had a great time at the Jets skills competition. It's a great opportunity to see the team without the $200-$400 price tag for tickets. Especially for families! The players seemed really relaxed like they were having fun, and a lot of them spent a ton of time interacting with the fans. They take the glass down off the side boards so fans can go right up to the boards. It was over before 9pm so not too late for the kids. We will go again next year.

  • Jets vs. Leafs

    by MK71 on 2015-12-05MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

First Jets game and had a great time. We have a great group of fans! Could not believe how loud the fans can get! Had great seats and had a fantastic time.

  • Jets finally win

    by jetsrule234 on 2015-11-29MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

The Winnipeg Jets returned home after a lousy 0-4 road trip and dispatched the Vancouver Canucks 4-1. The Jets needed the win very badly as did the Vancouver Canucks and both teams had their fans at the game.

  • Jets vse Avalanche

by Edkemo on 2015-11-26MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 3 out of 5

Some of the Jets seemed to coast in the later part of the 2nd period and the 3rd. Trouba looked like he had been drinking before the game.

  • Poor effort by Jets

by AJJP on 2015-11-10MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 1 out of 5

Wow I am not sure what happened but the Jets were a no show for this game. This makes the uncomfortable seats even more annoying. I will not pay this kind of money again for anything at MTS Center.

  • Winnipeg Jets vs Blackhawks

by Wilfrid on 2015-11-01MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 3 out of 5

Great game especially with a win. Good seats. Still wish I could get actual tickets rather than print at home

  • Bad seats

    by Shan204 on 2015-10-26MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

Deck seats are not my favorite. I sat right grind them. They affected my view. I had to lean forward and this affected the view of those behind me.

  • disappointed

by Flippylu on 2015-10-21MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 1 out of 5

paid 93.00 for each of two seats, row 1&2 upper deck on goal line. these seats turned out to be the most obstructed view I have ever seen at a sporting event. could only see clearly from the attack zone blue line in. centre ice area partial view and other end completely obstructed. watched the obstructed areas on the video scoreclock. never would have purchased these tickets if i had been aware of the situation. True North has made a terrible blunder to created the great lodge seats for the privaleged few. once everyone is aware these seats will be unsaleable.

  • Jets battle hard in 2nd

by chiefkewj on 2015-10-21MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

Was very good game with a pretty friend... her first time ... would have been better with the win. With even playing in the 1st and 2nd periods, including both Jets goals in the 2nd period. Costly give aways and failure to cover the passing lanes did the Jets in for the 3rd period and gave them their first home loss. Still a great crowd even tho it seemed a little early for them to get into it at first, as the game started at 2 p.m.

  • Jets vs Calgary

by FROGGIEST on 2015-10-05MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

Excellent game & Excellent seat :) My first NHL hockey game, it was also my daughter's first game too. We both enjoyed it. We'll be going again !

  • Great start leads to bad ending

by chiefkewj on 2015-09-28MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

Jets jump to 3-0 lead after 40 minutes, got the crowd going...and then let that lead slip away before dropping the loss in overtime giving the Oilers 4-3 victory (sans McDavid)

  • Debut of upgrades goes almost perfect

by chiefkewj on 2015-09-28MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

It was a great time to see the upgrades to the MTS Centre, new scoreboard, occasional video shots of the loge seating, and of course the hockey game which displayed the proposed 3 on 3 overtime, which unfortunately the Jets fell victim to the loss. Overall great game.

  • We came, we saw, we lost.

by NHLWPG on 2015-04-26MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

My son choked back tears in the final moments when he realized the Jets were now out of the play offs, but we stood proud with everyone else whirling our towels after the game, in honor of a great season sadly filled with more downs than ups. The only thing I would have traded the nights experience for would have been a win, even if I had to watch it from home instead of being in the MTS centre.

  • by SarahP on 2015-04-26MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

First Jets Playoff Game I have ever been to. Any seat at this event would have been amazing! The best thing I've experienced at the MTS Centre so far! Great crowd, great event! #gojetsgo

  • Go Jets Go!!

by Javagirl on 2015-04-25MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

The Winnipeg Jets played a great game and the Wpg Whiteout was phenomenal!! Loved the energy and raucous enthusiasm at the MTS Centre!! Can't wait to see more playoff games here in the future! The seats were great and right by the Jets bench! Very cool. Only suggestion would be some proper cup holders. The 300 sections had better cup holders. Venue was really good and it was a fun night! Go Jets Go!!
