Winnipeg Jets History

The Winnipeg Jets were founded in 1997 as the Thrashers, and began play in the 1999–2000 NHL season, spending 11 seasons in Atlanta and making the playoffs once in 2006-2007. In 2011, the franchise was sold to True North Sports and Entertainment, which relocated the team to Winnipeg and adopted the name of the city's original franchise in the World Hockey Association, the Jets.

Major league hockey dates back to 1972 in Winnipeg, which was home to one of the founding franchises of the WHA and one of four (along with Quebec, Hartford and Edmonton) to join the NHL when the leagues merged in 1979. The original Jets moved to Phoenix in 1996 and became the Phoenix Coyotes (then the Arizona Coyotes, who were in play from 1994 to 2024). In the 14 seasons that the Jets have been in Winnipeg, they’ve made eight playoff appearances, including a run to the Western Conference Finals in 2018.

In 2016, the team established the Winnipeg Jets Hall of Fame, with the "Hot Line" trio of Anders Hedberg, Bobby Hull and Ulf Nilsson as the inaugural inductees. Recent inductees include Teemu Selänne and Teppo Numminen.

  • Ducks fly better than the Jets

by chiefkewj on 2015-04-23MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

What made this game an awesome experience was the atmosphere by the fans in attendance of the MTS Centre. The intensity started just before the warm-ups and carried on throughout the game...first Stanley Cup playoff game in 19 years. 15,006 fans wearing white to nearly blanket out the 10 Ducks fans tucked away. Sadly the fan energy wasn't enough to boost the Jets to victory as they blew a lead and fell in Overtime showing their exhaustion

  • Greatest Sporting Event Ever!

by BoldJamesBold on 2015-04-23MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

I have been present at an NFL playoff game at Lambeau Field in Green Bay...And let me tell you...Winnipeg's first Playoff game in 19 years destroyed any other sporting event I have ever been to! The crowd spent 90% of the time standing and screaming! The whole crowd being in white, was incredible to see. I remember seeing it as a kid, but the Jets 2.0 did such a great job of nurturing that passion, that it just blows my mind how amazing an event this was! Will never forget this!

An experience that will never be forgotten. The return of the Winnipeg Whiteout.

  • Jets burn the Sharks

by chiefkewj on 2015-04-15MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

Great game of hockey. Jets start off with a first shot first goal and no looking back as they rout on the Sharks working their way to the playoffs.

  • Jets finish season with win...half the roster

by chiefkewj on 2015-04-15MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 2 out of 5

This was a great game of hockey with just as equal great crowd. Biggest issue which causes me to rate this lower is the fact that both teams had rosters that would be ideal for an exhibition game(pre-season game) at a top premium price. Compared to what they charged for a game against the Calgary Flames earlier in the season and having top players playing is unjust. It's great that both teams earned their respective playoff berths prior to this game, but to both show up and charge full price for 1/2 the talent is ludicrous

  • Great Jets Staff and Event

by Shelba on 2015-04-07MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

We took two seniors to the Jets game. The staff at the arena were so kind and helpful getting us our tickets and to our seats. It helped that we got to see a fantastic game with the Jets fans at their best. Thank you Jets for the experience.

The Jets got the crowd into the game and kept them in the game! Absolutely entertaining!!

  • jets vs rangers 2015

    by stephkate204 on 2015-04-03MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

Great game, the seats were great, a little hard to view when puck was on that side because we were in the 300 section right behind the net , but the puck moves so quick it probably only happened 3-5 times for less than a second each time.. Kids in the flight deck were in our section and great sports. overall great game. It was congested in the concourse leaving because they were giving out free chips at the exit. Took longer to get out than normal. There should be a different method to give out freebies, maybe hand them out to fans at the last whistle in the rows?

Awesome game!!! The Jets shut out the Capitals 3 - 0. Meyers was all over Ovechkin and not letting him get anything going.

  • Great defensive effort

    by habs10fan on 2015-03-24MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

The Jets defense stymied the Capitals all night with Tyler Myers having a great game. All around great team effort with all the Jets playing well. I am not a fan of Ondrej Pavelec but he had a good game.

  • Don't sit in row 1 in 300 level

by TLAD on 2015-03-22MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

I was in Winnipeg the week of March 16, so I decided to check out a Jets game. The atmosphere is probably the best I have seen at a NHL arena. The fans really get into the game. I picked up a seat in the 300 level, row 1. I was told that I wasn't able to lean forward in my seat. As such, being only 5'3, I had the railing right in my view and couldn't actually see anything.

  • Jets on a tear!!!!!!

by dingaling on 2015-03-22MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome venue to go to and the place was electric, i wasn,t the only one on the edge of my seat! Started with the shark club, good food , fast service for being so full and i mean full! Moved over to the rink and never had step outside so nice! Good idea having all the facilities (restarents , clubs, shopping.)hooked up by enclosed crosswalk,s. The game it self might have been one of the best of the year as we seam to have a goalie with new life poured over him. Pavy as we chanted was spectacular!!!! And the rest of the boys played to the top level and needed to as st loius was equally good ! One one tie after regulation and no score in overtime and our team wins in the shoot out. What more could u ask for . Wanted to buy next game tickets right there and then! But forgot my electronic devices at home so had to wait to getback. 5 stars for sure. Thanks TRUE NORTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • excellent hockey

by hatifr on 2015-03-22MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

Had all the drama and excitement of top level hockey played by two top teams, no fights, fair game. Thanks for rapid transit to beat the rush on our way back.

  • Go Jets Go

by CoolJ on 2015-03-21MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

This was a surprise for my son. The sharks are his favorite team. We live 5 hours away from the city and I didn't tell him he was going to the game until we got to the MTS center. He was very surprised. Although his team didn't win he still had a good time.

  • Winnipeg Jets vs San Jose Sharks - exciting game!

    by Jules5061 on 2015-03-21MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

I brought my grandchildren to this game. It was a fabulous experience for them.

  • by Anonymous on 2015-03-20MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 1 out of 5

I have been to many Jets games but this was the worst experience I've had. My husband and I drove 2 hours and got to the game only to realize our tickets were given to another woman by the same name and they were already in our seats!. Instead of making them leave our seats, we were given tickets to another section. This is wrong! The other woman should've been given those tickets since I paid a lot of money to get my original tickets in which two other people were sitting! This has really turned me off from wanting to buy future tickets! Not to mention that we missed a whole period trying to get this sorted out. I wish my husband and I can get something good from this!

  • Great game and uncomfortable seats!

by vicfirth on 2015-03-20MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

Great game but the seats are really squished and you have to strain to see a lot. I book a chiropractor appointment after every game from up here.

  • Jets vs Sharks

A great game with an important win over the Sharks. Good seats in the North End.

  • Now open The Shark "club"

by NHLWPG on 2015-03-20MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

We clubbed the life out of the Sharks. 5-2 final, the Jets made winning look easy against a team in survival mode.

  • my 2nd jets game

    by barnstormer55 on 2015-03-20MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

I was in awe when I went to my first Jets game 2 years ago. In my second opportunity I was excited but by game time I was truly thrilled. It is the first time in a long time that I have got to share my passion with 15,000 other people all focused on the same thing. LOVED IT. Thank-you True North, thank-you Winnipeg, Thank-you Winnipeg Jets
