Winnipeg Jets History

The Winnipeg Jets were founded in 1997 as the Thrashers, and began play in the 1999–2000 NHL season, spending 11 seasons in Atlanta and making the playoffs once in 2006-2007. In 2011, the franchise was sold to True North Sports and Entertainment, which relocated the team to Winnipeg and adopted the name of the city's original franchise in the World Hockey Association, the Jets.

Major league hockey dates back to 1972 in Winnipeg, which was home to one of the founding franchises of the WHA and one of four (along with Quebec, Hartford and Edmonton) to join the NHL when the leagues merged in 1979. The original Jets moved to Phoenix in 1996 and became the Phoenix Coyotes (then the Arizona Coyotes, who were in play from 1994 to 2024). In the 14 seasons that the Jets have been in Winnipeg, they’ve made eight playoff appearances, including a run to the Western Conference Finals in 2018.

In 2016, the team established the Winnipeg Jets Hall of Fame, with the "Hot Line" trio of Anders Hedberg, Bobby Hull and Ulf Nilsson as the inaugural inductees. Recent inductees include Teemu Selänne and Teppo Numminen.

  • Absolutely Brilliant.

My wife and mother in law surprised me with tickets to a Jets home game, for Christmas. My birthday is on Jan 9th and we attended the game on the 8th. We live 12 hours away from Winnipeg, so it was a long drive, but the experience of attending a home game was astounding. Another check off the bucket list.✔️ Thank you Winnipeg Jets for the best birthday ever!!

  • Winnipeg Jets Skills Competition

by Snow on 2023-01-07Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

I had center ice seats so it was perfect. The cost of the event was reasonable and the event staff was really helpful with directions to our seats and how to get back to where our car was parked. The arena was full of families and the kids and parents alike were thrilled with the chance to meet the players, get autographs and selfies. The Competition was really well organized and entertaining thanks to the players with their antics. I highly recommend the event for fans and families and would return in a minute.

We have really enjoyed spending time with family at a few of the Jets events this year! If the prices were a little lower we could probably do more. But it’s always a great time! Thanks!

  • Aussie First

by Bill on 2023-01-02Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

We introduced our son who now lives in Australia along with his fiancé and his parents to "ice hockey". The game featured a Jets team that didn't show up for the first period except for Connor Hellybuck, followed by a penalty shot (successful) and a hat trick (why are they throwing caps on the ice). All in all it was an amazing evening and the Jets won.

  • Go jets go

Great time with friends cheering on our favourite team!

  • High energy crowd in the building.

    by Grandpa & 3 Grandson's on 2022-12-30Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

It was a high energy crowd... even though the JETS were heavily challenged by the WILD and their goaltender. They fought hard yet couldn't post the win.

  • Not bad

by JP on 2022-12-30Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 3 out of 5

Went for some cheaper tickets. View was ok, the Big Sugar guy doing the Anthem’s was an embarrassment to all, went out of key, lost his timing, and when instrumental playing of O Canada played wrong notes. Very bad!

  • Easy o Use

by Harry Bosch on 2022-12-23Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

The app was very easy to pull up our tickets and get into the game. Very user friendly.

  • Love the Jets games but…

    by B. K. on 2022-12-16Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

Need to improve/update TV timeouts to get fans jacked up! Better music, through in some local talent, dancers, musicians, MCs whatever to get fans going…it’s been too quiet lately and we need it to be louder! Get creative! Contact me for ideas!

  • Fantastic

by Beckles on 2022-12-03Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

The Jets played an amazing game and beat the reigning Stanley Cup Champions with a shut out. However there was a fight in the stands amongst some fans. Luckily it wasn't in my section but that was a distraction from the game for a bit. I have found out that the injured man was my friend's brother.

  • Daughters epic experience

by Eagle on 2022-12-02Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome experience for my daughters 2nd Jets game, Staff Overall A+ work on trying to help my special needs girl, and just being at the game with her was a good experience and witnessing Blake Wheelers Hat trick and His 844 franchise game… thanks a lot

  • Jets Awesome

by TerrenceJF on 2022-12-02Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

It was a great game - Hockey Fights Cancer intro was an emotional rollercoaster with Catherine Wredford Ledlow singing an inspirational anthem. But that game - masterful as the Jets kicked in the afterburner- beating the Stanley cup champion Colorado Avalanche 5 to 0! Hat trick by Wheeler and Shutout by Hellebuyck !!! What a night!

  • Loved the atmosphere

by Deesniggs on 2022-11-22Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

I loved how easy it was to get into the venue. Pretty crazy how crowded the hallway is though at intermission, all in all nice to see everyone enjoying themselves and people meeting up with other people they know!
